The day the Doomslayer goes portable has arrived!

Oooooo impressions please. I've not seen any reviews or anything for this yet and keep hovering over the digital pre-load button....I just need the gentlest of nudges....

Here's some new footage:

I thought they'd dropped it from 60fps to 30fps. Haven't they?

Well in handheld its genuinely difficult to tell. Will report back when I've tried docked later tonight.

Lets face it though if you brought this to play it docked that doesn't make much sense, so long as you have the means to play via another system.

One issue in handheld mode is text size.. it doesn't scale well and can be pretty tricky to read at times.

@scottcr @rgraves Well initial impressions are really positive.

The main plus point is that the framerate and speed seems intact.. it's quite amazing how well they have got it running.

Hold on @rgraves

Okay so having been called out on the framerare comment it's definitely not 60fps and having played a few levels it shows in the more open areas.

But having said that it still seems to maintain a solid framerate no matter how much is kicking off (so far atleast) and the frantic pace is still very much intact.

I'd recommend watching a few vids to get a feel.. as I know people are more conscious of framerate/resolutions than others.

Main thing I'm struggling with at the moment though is the contrast in coming back to a DOOM game after playing Mario for the past few weeks!... it's a bit jarring to say the least.

Controls needed a bit of tweaking for handheld mode as they were way too twitchy on default and I'm still to settle on a button layout.

Can't see many noticeable compromises on the visuals (and I also own the PC & PS4 versions) but have yet to try it docked.  No doubt DF will rip it apart though.

All in all it's the best FPS shooter of the past god knows how many years that you can now play anywhere... what's not to love!

Awwwww, my poor wallet!!

I'm in the 'not really concious' camp - I often struggle to tell the difference to be honest. Does it play well? Yes, then good - I genuinely don't care if it's at 30fps, 60fps or any other arbitrary number I struggle to tell the difference between.

I'M IN!

Oh yeah it plays fine (once you tweak the controls to your liking).. Jury is out on how long can play on the joycons before it starts getting uncomfortable though.

Had a quick go in docked mode and the visual compromises are much more apparent, particularly around texture quality. Again doesn't detract from the actual gameplay though.

Currently but the tech should be cheaper in a few years, I guess.

It would be awesome. If they could improve the screen like that and get rid of the bezel to make it larger then it'd be pretty much perfect in my eyes.

That's what excites me about it really. What we have currently is an entry level model but it'll get much slicker in years to come, and perhaps more powerful too.

I ordered that Orzly mispriced case bundle for £9.99 that came with a load of gubbins thrown in, amongst the stuff are their screen protectors.

I’ve never used a screen protector for anything, should I start now?

Incidentally the bundled joycon grips that I thought would be pointless are very nice.

Screen protectors are for grey console owners, just sayin!

Was in Hong Kong for a few days. There are no longer any game shops in my city on the mainland, so figured I'd pick up Mario Odyssey whilst there. That one game should last me a while, I thought...

Oops. I got a bit carried away. Not an Amiibo collector but I love Resetti and Toad, and they were only about four quid each.

Im in HK this week. Where did you get all this? Golden Dragon Centre?

Sino Centre on Nathan Road, mostly. I find there a bit more interesting than Golden these days. More merch and retro stuff to look at along with the current gen releases.
