Nintendo Switch

I’ve been thinking about this with the recent Mario and I don’t think Switch is just a hardware proposition - I think a lot of enjoyment for many here comes in the way Nintendo are making their big Mario & Zelda titles more bite size - Mario constantly throws moons and small goals at you as it works better for something that could be used more akin to a phone type game.

It a genius approach on their part as they aren’t forgoing the bigger idea or goals - neither of those games are phone games, but they play in a way that is broken up into tiny bits if you so desire, but also suit longer play sessions.

The hardware and software work in perfect harmony.

As usual the big publishers won’t take note of this and I suspect that the big traditional console games (like say LA Noir) won’t find a big an audience on the machine.

EA are pretty much going down the path of always online, always multiplayer, loot boxes and micro-transactions... those types of games don't fit with the switch so... can't blame them.

Other than SW:B, I haven't bought an EA game in years though... and I'm not fussed about SW:B2 at all.

This is Nintendo we're talking about, there will be a Super-Switch in March next year that has more internal storage, the Switch2 that has a smaller screen for those who only want Handheld, a 2DSwitch that has buttons missing for no reason, Light Switch that's thinner, Thin Switch that's lighter, and so on until everyone's bored.

I think it's a shame (and a missed opportunity for them) that EA aren't getting on-board. It clearly goes deep between the two companies at this point. Some of their stuff would work very well - quite why they haven't insta-ported Garden Warfare for example is a mystery.

I'd love if they eliminated the bezel and increased the screen size, that would be a nice upgrade. Happy to use this one for a couple more years though.

increasing the screen size would probably mean the joycons wouldn't be backward compatible though - and the dock would have to change.  I suspect the focus tested the fuck out of the screen size as well as came to a happy place in terms of trades off of size vs cost.

I fully expect that in 2 years time or so I'll be buying a new 'tablet' part of my switch and handing the current one to the kids...

I think they meant sacrificing the bezel to make the screen bigger within the existing console size rather than making the whole thing bigger?

I think it's completely fair to expect relatively (every couple of years) updates to the switch - but retaining backwards compatibility and the same form factor....  just like people are used to with phones.

Also, well, every video games console in the current generation, both home and handheld all have hardware revisions, or do you mean like 'New' Switch which will play all the old Switch games, and some dedicated 'New' Switch games that need higher CPU speed or whatever?

I don't think this will happen.  The complete lack of 'New' 3DS exclusive titles is presumably down to it having a much reduced install base compared to the 3DS.  It's confusing for consumers, and alienates them for future hardware too.

When or how is the correct time/way to remove your game card from your switch - should I turn it off? Every time I do it I get an error message

Make sure the software is closed, swap. That's the intended way I believe. Are you sure it's closed before swapping?

er, no

That will most likely be the problem then! Highlight the game on the home menu (it'll say 'Playing' over it in a grey box iirc), and hit 'X' I think it is - you'll be asked if you want to close the software. Do that, then you can swap without errors.

Note to self, never nip home on my lunch break “to play a little bit” of Zelda, lost track of time and now I’m an hour late back to work

In my defence I climbed my second tower and found a new Shrine so it’s perfectly justified

I’m about to get a SD card but 250gb ones are still a bit expensive... is it easy to transfer games from one SD to another?

Yes, you can just copy the contents over on a PC. I'd say get a 128 one for now and then just go bigger later on when the cost has come down a bit more.
