*sigh*

this is is why I lurk...

If you put aside one game, Mario Kart, and one game, Wii sports, and look at the vast majority of Wii games. Not many of them will have sold enough to penetrate the top 40 all formats charts.

I'm not going to argue the semantics, as it was a general point - to point out what Nintendo have learnt since the Wii through the Wii U and [hopefully] corrected for the Switch.

I don't think it's beyond the pale to suggest Nintendo first party isn't exactly prolific in it's release quantity and time scales.

This is painful, Strangelite.  37 millions copies. I'd stick with quickly calling everyone fanboys and attempt ducking out again.

Haha, but they just won't let me leave... :P

(Edit: Didn't think I'd spend my afternoon arguing about a console that's as dead as a door-nail whilst trying to support the Switch and praise Nintendo for learning from their mistakes )

Whats the cut off point in sales for it to be deemed a success, carnival games sold over 4 million so vastly more than some critically acclaimed games this gen?

NSMB wii sold nigh on 30 million as I recall, that alone tells you something....

The vast majority of all games on all machines don’t sell very well and there is nothing on the PS2, 360, PS3 or PS4 that can touch the Wii top 5 so I’m not sure what your point about the Wii is because it’s sales figures for the best selling games dwarf all other consoles!?

Just having a look now, the Wii actually appears in the top 40 best selling games of all time more than any other console (joint top with the DS). An amazing achievement for a single platform (considering the other entries are mostly multiplatform)

Xbox 360 has one...Kinect Adventures is the 20th best selling game... with 24 million copies. Mental.

Depends on what you're talking about really. As I pointed out earlier , Nintendo used to have trouble getting more then a handfull of releases in the first year of its platform's release. At least, that's the case if you're talking about big AAA franchises such as Mario, Zelda or Metroid. The Switch has seen a pretty remarkable turnaround in that regard.

The second year usually sees the release of projects from their second parties. Intelligent Systems, HAL, NDcube, etc. Switch has already shown a decent line-up for next year with Yoshi, Kirby Star Allies and Fire Emblem scheduled to hit (not to mention the first few exclusive third party stuff like Octopath, No More Heroes, etc.). We'll see what more they've got lined up towards the year's end, but first impression seem to indicate a good 2018 for Switch.

One of the things that I think appeals most to me is that I know I'll bleed everything I buy for this dry. Mario and Zelda will get as close to 100%'ed as I can - I just know that. Mario Kart will get played loads and the only one I'm unsure of is Splatoon but I bought that as something different.

This is the main reason I'll be buying one once I've got the funds sorted. I have limited gaming time and I'm not fond of hiding myself away in the spare room whilst the other half works in the evenings (she's a teacher) so a Switch would enable me to get a lot more gaming done whilst still being within earshot of the other half in case she needs someone to bounce ideas off for lesson plans etc.

Plus it'd come awfully handy when taking the train from London to Wales to see the folks or when popping over to Germany to see hers.

Right, I'm going to mention it here because the Mario thread is probably full of spoilers, but...

I'm not enjoying Mario Odyssey.

Well, I am. Sort of. And I'm only about an hour in. But pretty much every other Mario game grabbed me instantly and this... has not. Yes, I know there's a way to go yet, and I know that the really shit looking Cap Land or whatever is just the start, but the other two worlds I've done so far haven't entranced me in the immediate way Mario 64 or Sunshine or Galaxy or 3D World did.

I'm not liking the cap throwing. I'm finding the controls nowhere near as precise as I'd expect. The waggle - urgh - can that be turned off? I suppose with joycon it's fine, but with the Pro pad it's too heavy.

I don't like constantly being told how to play: Here's how to do a ground pound! Oh, here's how to do it again in case you missed it. Oh! And again. In fact, lets actually have a chat about it then let me open the manual up for you (again). I know how to play a fucking Mario game, thanks.

And the music. All Mario music is memorable forever after the first few bars. This hasn't even registered with me while I'm playing yet.

Again, it's early days and these days an hour isn't enough to judge most games. Sure, I'll probably think it's amazing by the end. It's in no way a bad game at this point, I'm just really disappointed it hasn't grabbed me yet. I'm actually thinking of just playing some more Stardew Valley before bed instead of this. No, really.

Took me 9 seconds to know it was comfortably the second best game this year, few hours more for GOAT!

The music is stunning and you don’t need waggle on pro pad, I think it’s you tbh ;)

How do you do the hat spin attack then? Genuine question. It has told me to flick the pad several times now, but not suggested another way.

Spin mario round and throw cap, tbh that one is a flick on pro pad so often do that - one hand and  flick pad forward.

Re: spin toss. Yep, just like that, rotate then press. I also found that if you crouch when you do the spin motion and then release ZL you can go straight into the spinning jump or circle cap toss. Sometimes the circular motion can make you move a few steps but that's not the case if you're crouching. Can be handy in tight spots.

Pretty sure it's not but I'll try again. What about cap homing attack? That's another pad-flick one.

It is, I’ve played for many hours - spin Mazza right round baby right round and throw cap.

No idea on homing one as I don’t miss much as so used to controls now.

Pretty much the opposite of DeKays post,

I also started a game tonight, and am also an hour in. That game, is Zelda....

Holy tits on a stick, I mean, my god. When everyone was going on about it I thought, sure it’s going to be good but it’s not going to be THAT good.

I think what astounds me even more is the fact this is my first ever Zelda game, I mean, why did it take me this long ? I can not wait to get going with it, and you know what’s great ? Bollocks, I’ll take it up to bed with me, and then to work with me tomorrow and have a bash on my lunch break.

Thankyou Switch you glorious bastard.

It's not really that much like the other Zelda games, and I say this as someone who never really got the love for the 3D Zelda games. They're clearly very competent, but never really did it for me. Breath of the Wild, however, captivated me in a way very little else has ever done. Odyssey hasn't gotten me quite as gaga as everyone else, but I'm loving it nonetheless. Both are, by a massive distance, ahead of anything else released in the last couple of years.

It would be fair to say that no game could live up to the hype that these two have generated, except for ... well ... these two.

If you think that's good wait until you get onto Odyssey. I mean, BoTW was already the GOAT but Odyssey is in a league all by itself. It's an absolute fucking masterpiece, and in my opinion so far flawless.
