Guys, quick question regarding Xenoblade Chronicles, I’ve never played one, is it a bit like Final Fantasy ? Is there another game you could compare it too ? I’ve never even really seen screenshots so I have no clue,

Also do I have to play the first before I can play the second or doesn’t the story follow on ?

Fast RMX really isn't that good!

Xenoblade Chronicles is a long winded but overall fun RPG. The first has a great world, solid story and amazing music. Battle system is extremely limited for the sheer length of the game and can't get rather boring. It's well structured overall and gives you a vague feeling of freedom. It's sort of RPG lite, not easy by any stretch but user friendly and soft on failure.

Hopefully the second, a sequel of sorts is like the Wii original and not the disappointing Wii U sequel.

I only ever played the Wii U game and while I found the couple of hours of preamble all a bit ponderous, wandering around that world was a rare pleasure. The sense of scale is amazing and no surprise that some of the team was apparently drafted in to help with BotW world building. The sheer size of some of the rock formations and monsters was awesome, in the literal sense. Just a shame the game was a bit boring.

Hold on, just realised you're the guy who's not playing Odyssey because he's playing Stardew Valley instead. I deeply regret my respectful replies in this thread. You're a bad wrong un.

I'm not playing Mario because Toys R Us are cunts, not because I'd rather play Stardew Valley.

Toys R Ass (holes)

To be fair, Stardew is all sorts of wonderful, you have every right to be playing that until you get Mario

I haven't paid too much attention to the pre-release media but from the trailers, I'm not entirely sure. Bearing in mind that the first one is very much an adventure that likes to tell a story.

It's actually pretty good if you have a Wii/U/3DS, it'll take you about as long as it'll take for the sequel to launch to finish it though.

I have to disagree regarding Fast RMX. It's not like F-Zero at all, let alone anywhere near as good.

If you find GX too twitchy you need to calibrate the stick in the options as the default is set to arcade steering controls. This neutralises the dead-zone and makes the handling mimic F-Zero X.

RMX is made buy those that desperately want to understand how to make a futuristic racer but clearly don't. It has no flow at all, it's hard because it has no flow and puts too much focus on those stupid speed up strips and it doesn't actually feel like racing.

It's basically a war of attrition.

I suppose it's like Final Fantasy in that it's a JRPG, but I don't know how similar they are. The wii game was spectacular, one my all time top 10, but the wii u one was a bit of a letdown. You don't need to have played the others, they're mechanically similar but otherwise unrelated.

Totally agree. No flow, not even any inertia to the movement, it's jerky and if you don't hit the speed boosts there's no other way of making up time with good cornering, it's basically a straight line racer with obstacles. I was too generous with the few words I used. I should have said 'fast, looks good, is fuckin shite'.

Funnily enough, on reflection, Xenoblade Chronicles X is actually most like FFXV. Amazing map and big pretty stuff to look at but combat feels automated and your gang are all bell-ends. This one is supposedly a home run, and though. We'll see.

Enjoying the Switch and Mario so far, seems like a great little machine. Slightly less than impressed with the ergonomics when playing in handheld mode, though - might have to look into some grips or wait until they release some XL joycons as my wrists/hands definitely feel it a bit.

aaaaaaaand you're dead to me.

Hehe, I know by now you're the shmup guy. I'm only just getting into the genre. I played Dodonpachi for the first time at Arcade Club last weekend and it blew my mind. That said, I have really enjoyed Sine Mora, seems like a good challenge for a relative beginner, looks pretty, great soundtrack, some unusual bosses. I'm interested in what your criticisms are, maybe I'll take it to the relevant thread.

In the last few weeks I also downloaded everything I could on XB1 BC and so I can see that Ikaruga, Guwange and Radiant Silvergun are in a different class. I'd love them on Switch or even Dodonpachi!

Edit: Found your impressions of Sine Mora in the shmups thread.

It's dull and lifeless, the pacing is all over the shop, you're mostly waiting for something to happen for long stretches, there are loads of unskippable cutscenes which you can fast forward through but they still take ages, lots of cheap traps during boss fights, tiny hitboxes on the bosses, tiny, hard to see bullets and missiles, it has analogue movement, there's no focus button, the controls aren't rebindable, you have to cap the framerate if you force off vsync, your shot is slow and underpowered, the powerups are randomized so getting a high score is dependant on you getting lucky drops, there's an arbitrary time limit that'll just run out seemingly for no reason and it's game over.

Sounds like someone needs to git gud. :hat:

I'm just mucking about :DIt is proper smelly though.

Do you have a pc? Deathsmiles is currently half price in the halloween sale and that's the perfect in - http://store.steampowered.com/app/314180/Deathsmiles/

Also available on xbox, the 2nd game is on xbox too and that's even more of a gentle in. It's so hypnotic and relaxing with rings and little bullets slowly floating around. Both games are brilliant.

Me too :) Cheers, I'll have a look at Deathsmiles. I've heard it mentioned around and about so I'll take a punt. I never realised how good XB BC would be but I'm really seeing the benefits now. I need to get myself a Japanese account too, if I've understood correctly.

If you do have a pc, stanshalll, get "blue wish resurrection plus", it's free and brilliant - http://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/game/se448188.html

It's generous with extra lives and has a newbie-friendly auto-bomb mechanic where a bomb will go off when you get hit instead of you losing a life. Feels very muchi muchi pork but without the evil yagawa ranking. Nice slow bullets and an easy 1cc. It's brilliant fun.

Thanks. I've only got an ageing laptop these days, I'm stuck to a computer at work so never fire it up at home. I'll certainly get on Deathsmiles, though.

I think I'm a bit strange. The Switch is obviously designed for in out/in out of the dock and on off/on off of the joycons but I'm pretty paranoid about doing both. So although I have no problems using the joycons in the little pad holder, find them perfectly comfy despite my large hands, I've ordered a pro controller so I can leave them attached to the console. Also attached some felt to the dock. And ordered Splatoon 2. Man this is one expensive hobby when you want it to be.

I don’t think you’re paranoid. My biggest issue with the switch is that I think it’s below average in hardware as both a handheld and home console. I find it uncomfortable to play for long extensions as a handheld and I feel the joycons are really flimsy in this mode. I also feel it’s conpromised for porting purposes which may keep the big publishers away. It’s essentially a weird interesting compromise that I’m happy to live with but I’m very interested to see what the revision looks like.
