I've been playing The Mummy Demastered for the past hour or so and so far it is decent. The environments are quite nice and darker tone reminds me somewhat of Metroid Fusion. Likewise, the map mechanism has been been nudging me in the direction of the next key objective without explicitly showing the way there. The gunplay is reminiscent of games such as Contra and is much more prominent than the 2D Metroid titles. It's been quite easy so far; hopefully the challenge soon ramps up.

Disappointingly, the frame rate has stuttered occasionally (in handheld mode) in the larger areas and I really hope they sort this with a patch. The standout feature of this game so far has to be the soundtrack which has some really quality synth beats.

A nice little appetiser before the grand feast that is Super Mario Odyssey lands in a few days!

Bit late sorry, but for those still interested I completed Thimbleweed Park last week and thoroughly enjoyed it, being a big fan of the Lucasarts of old.

It was definitely chucklesome in places and struck just the right balance between the older obtuse puzzles and accessibility you'd expect in a more modern title.

Voice acting isn't great (it isn't awful either) but this adds to the charm as that evokes the classics.

There's also five characters that have different intertwining stories. This can be a tad confusing if you're stuck but also means there's usually more than one puzzle on the go.

If you are impatient or new to these games then there is a hint line accessed by any working telephone within the game which will give tiered hints on your current puzzles so you can get a nudge without spoiling the puzzle (or completely spoil it if you want to just move on).

So while not quite up there with the genre's elite, I'd still recommend it to newbies and veterans alike especially for fewer pennies than Operation Wolf on the Spectrum.

Another reccommendation for The Mummy Demastered from me. It's basically Super Metroid meets Contra/Probotector, for all the good reasons.

I'd be all over it if I wasn't deep in Stardew and have Mario arriving this week.

I need the games on the switch to start being a bit shit because there's just too much...

has there ever been a platform with such a strong first year?

What a contrast to what we were all saying at the beginning of the year, eh?

Taking the rose tinted specs off though, the SNES and N64 may have had good years, but are they as good as the Switch has had so far?

I thought I'd have a browse down what the Wii had in the first year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_games)

I noted these, but there might be others worth mentioning too:

Zelda Twilight
Wii Sports
Excite Truck
Mario Strikers Charged
RE4
Super Paper Mario
Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Mario Party 8

That's not too shabby really.

Completely off topic but I was amazed at this:

Currently the last announced games on Wii are Let's Sing 2018[1] and Just Dance 2018 scheduled to release in October 2017.

A large part of what has made the Switch so amazing in year 1 is the addition of all of these indie games that lots of people haven't played..

The SNES first year, at least in PAL land was pretty amazing:

Mario World

Zelda LTTP

F Zero

Super Tennis

Castlevania

Mario Kart

Final Fight

Super R Type

Street Fighter 2

Loads more. I mean Switch is amazing but just check that line up.

All I know is that the Switch's first year is a great deal better then what Nintendo managed during the 3DS's/Wii U's first year on the market.

3DS:

Nintendogs + Cats

Pilotwings Resort

Steel Diver

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Star Fox 64 3D

Pokémon Rumble Blast

Super Mario 3D Land

Mario Kart 7

Wii U

New Super Mario Bros. U

Nintendo Land

Lego City Undercover

Game & Wario

Pikmin 3

New Super Luigi U

The Wonderful 101

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

Wii Party U

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games

Super Mario 3D World

Mediocrity for the most part if you'd ask me. The only stand-outs being franchise titles and The Wonderful 101.

I'd ask myself the question if you were ever so worried with the Wii that after three games, you'd have nothing left to play. With the Wii, I always got the impression that most played through Galaxy and that was it. Were you one of those? Or did you enjoy stuff like Wii Sports as well?

I wouldn't worry. Once you have the system in your hands you won't look back.  There's loads of good indie stuff, ARMS is ace, I reckon you'll dig that.  Mario vs Rabbids. Tbh Mario and Zelda are gonna keep you occupied through til Christmas and beyond, especially if you're planning on picking up MK8 too.

It's no Wii. First and foremost this is a console for gamers, and it's the ultimate dad console ;)

i was still there playing House of the Dead Overkill towards the end and there was always time for wii sports but the whole waggle and shit graphics left a bitter taste from a life long SNES/Nintendo fan

In that case, I'd say you're good on buying it now. The Wii's focus with Motion Control and less then stellar graphics came from the succes of titles like Wii Sports, Wii Play and others which caused a gold-rush effect that wound up having a negative effect on the entire software library. Switch's big succes stories have been BotW, various indie titles, Mario+Rabbids and soon Odyssey and Skyrim. Expect some big single-player starting stuff next year. Don't like the graphics? Use it as a portable. Done.
