I didn’t play Harvest Moon and hated Animal Crossing.

I cannot stop with Stardew Valley, it is extraordinarily compulsive to the level that I need to be really careful about picking up the Switch just for a quick days farming/mining/fishing/pottering/etc as it invariably leads to me losing another hour or two.

Thanks! I think I'll take the plunge.

You say that like it's a bad thing?

Not at all. I bloody love the game. I'm just pointing out to the chap who said he never got on with Harvest Moon that this is essentially a Harvest Moon game. A very, very, very well made one but definitely that style of game.

The thing I've found (as someone who has loved every Harvest Moon game ever made 'in theory') is that this has that undefinable something that pulls you back. Maybe it's the variety of immediately available activities, maybe it's the chilled 'so what you didn't water today?' mechanics...I don't know. It's just hit me right in the heart and mind. I can't stop playing the blasted thing.

It's clearly made by someone who understands and loves those games and had the skill to not just make an acceptable tribute act but something that transcends the very best in the genre.

This. Without a doubt.

If you like Metroid games... you'll love Axiom Verge.

I do. I’ve been meaning to pick it up on PS4 for what must be years now. I’ll get around to it at some point. I’ve gone back to Mario +Rabbids and have discovered I’ve got a fair bit left so I’m going to hold off picking up anything else until Odyssey.

Purchased on the 8th of July, off to Nintendo I go.....

Which runs the risk of losing all your game progress if they offer a replacement.

Do we have any feel for when they’ll offer some kind of save game backup solution?

Hey guys, nooob incoming....

So after an incredible amount of scrimping and shit selling, the money is in my account for a Switch! (Woooo) Just the console for a week or two until payday, I just know if I don't buy it while I've got the money I'll spend it on 15 kebabs.

Just a couple of noob questions that are probably in this thread but due to its impressive 881 pages so far I can't actually be bothered to dig too far...

What's the battery life like on the screen ? I take my DS everywhere, is this going to be as portable and accessible ?

What sort of prices are the major indie games ie. Golf Story / Stardew Valley ?

Go on, have a guess. What do you think the lifespan of the Switch will be ? I'm best off adopting this early to get the most out of it aren't I ? I was only just getting round to buying a WiiU when the switch was announced !

Cheers guys

Battery life 3-4 hours depending on the game, wi-fi usage etc. but that's generally what you'll get. Indie games are generally in the £10-£15 range, although there are some wild variances. But the ones you mentioned are in that price range.

Close, £9.50 round mine way for a large mixed kebab...

Anyway, back on topic....

Switch dispatched, £12 left in my bank, can I afford Golf Story ?

Yes! If you buy it from the South African shop.

Unfortunatley (well fortunately really) I already played Stardew Valley to DEATH on PC, and I mean to an extent of having done everything there was to do, I'm not sure I could physically start again, it came in at number 3 in my best games of all time list.

Well, best not go back down that rabbit hole, then!

Golf Story is fun, charming and around ten to fifteen hours long.

In a similar budget ballpark I'd recommend:

- Deemo (pretty piano based rhythm game, shit load of tracks)

- Axiom Verge (Metroidvania done justice)

- Butcher (2D pixelated Doom)

- Slime-san (Meat Boy style platformer with a C64 aesthetic)

- Sonic Mania (nuff said)

- Picross S (a bit cheaper, same old great game)

- Strikers 1945 (vertical scrolling arcade shmup)

- Neuro Voider (twin stick roguelike, tons of upgrades and customisation, ymmv)

- Thumper (bangin, psychedelic rhythm action)

If you can stretch a little further, Shovel Knight is excellent and will most likely tide you over til Odyssey.

The top tier stuff is full price or thereabouts:

BotW

MK8D

Splatoon 2

ARMS

Isaac AB+

Mario & Rabbids

Disgaea 5

Rayman Legends
