I'm still grinding my way through Zelda, trying to finish it before Skyrim comes out. But I'm tempted to pick up a little game to play on the side.  I'm not a big fan of retro graphics, and want something I can dip in and out of when I get fed up with Zelda bosses (why did they even put them in there?  *sigh*), so what would people recommend?  Golf Story and Axiom Verge don't really appeal at all, and Steamworld Dig 2 seems very similar to the first, which I've only recently played through on the Vita.

I suppose I could look at one of the bigger titles, but I don't want to spend much as it's just a filler until Skyrim arrives and takes over my gaming life.

I got tired of the 8 and 16 bit graphics revival a long time ago as, for me, they just don;t work on the big, sharp displays we use these days. However, I am finding them to be much more acceptable on the little switch screen so games like Axiom Verge,  Golf Story, and Stardew Valley are now eminently playable to me. And all are quite brilliant in their own way.

It's all these indie titles that have really made this console for me as they are mostly games that are perfect for on the go play. Those, and Zelda, of course.  I don't care for MK8 too much having been annoyed by it for way too long on the Wii U and absolutely hated Splatoon but guess they could work as quick in and out games?

In which case, how about something like Yono, Wonderboy or Thumper?

Hadn't looked at any of those, thanks. I've played Thumper to death on PSVR, and the other two don't look like my cup of tea, but thanks for the recommendations.  I'm not strictly looking for an indie, I just don't want to drop 40 quid on something I'll only play a bit.

Well, I think once you've got over the retro graphics in games like Axiom Verge or Stardew Valley, you will find some of the most engrossing and well designed games around today. But if you really can't get past that then get ARMS. It's perfect for dipping in and out of. It's great with traditional or motion controls, single or multiplayer, and they're constantly adding new content. Great for the odd thirty minutes here and there.

OK, what types of stuff do you like - if you give me idea what your cup of tea is, I'll try and come up with some suitable alternative beverages. It's a public service.

THUMPER.

I'm playing it at the moment and it's a perfect quick blast game. (think it's on sale at the moment too)

EDIT: Oh you played it on VR.

Maybe Rogue Trooper, is that out yet?

Trials would be perfect.  I've spent hundreds of hours playing that over the years.

ARMS looks way too stressful, and I play on the train a lot, so the motion controls wouldn't be an option.

Thimbleweed Park is excellent - it's got retro graphics, but... as said earlier up the thread a bit - they don't seem to jar as much on the switch, and this is coming from someone who gave a loud FFS when he saw Golf Story had pixel art.

ARMS is remarkably slow paced for a fighter and plays perfectly well without motion controls... the bulk of my play has been on the train too.

Cool, I'll check that out. I did enjoy Monkey Island back in the day.  Still not convinced by ARMS, but maybe I need to investigate a bit more.

Hhmm, might need to give me more than just that one.

How about something like Mr Shifty? Or Snake Pass? The Bridge? Severed?

Don't Knock Twice and The Flood in the Fire are out next week as well...[possible citation from deKay shop req'd]

World of Goo if you've somehow missed that over the years?

Avoid Snake Pass at all costs... I love the look of it, the idea of it

but it's absolutely uncontrollable. :(

Get away with ya, it's all about mastering the controls. Which is totally do-able. They are different though, absolutely.

Anyone played that Earth Atlantis one yet - how's that?

Now you're just trying to wind me up! :)

5 minutes of Googling tells me that it's The Flame in the Flood.  But yeah, that does look interesting. Probably the best of the bunch so far, thanks!

Haha sorry, I'm old, I get jumbled. I was close enough that you got there, that's what counts right!

I tried and tried and tried and I just couldn't get my head around it... the tutorial just isn't good enough.   Some on screen prompts on how to wrap yourself around poles and stuff would've gone a long way.  I gave up.  I don't mind mastering controls if I understand them!

I'll totally agree the tutorial didn't do a decent enough job - doesn't provide much guidance at all really. Shame, because it does shine when it clicks.

Worst I've bought would have to be Flip Wars - it's had loads of updates recently so I should give it another go, but it was miles too slow and clunky on release for me. Bad Flip Wars, bad.

I still haven’t been able to find a case for the joycons if you want to carry an extra set around with you. I wouldn’t worry, but the soft touch finish on them seems like it would be very easy to damage.

I get two sets of joycons (and more) in the case I use - has a bit more storage than average if you adjust the layout a bit (one of the flaps is on velcro so easy to move) - don't put anything in the 'pockets' and instead use the space on the bottom for storage.

I did what this review said, works a treat:

So what I ended up doing was moving the removable pad and strapping it to the back of the games flap instead. This made the case far better – you gain space which I’ve put in both Joycons (they slot in nicely next to each other), and there’s even enough left over space for a USB C cable, AND a square shaped battery bank charger/or two extra Joycons. Plus, in this configuration, the pouches now act as a soft cushion for the screen (especially as I can put a cleaning cloth and earphones in them). I’ve kept it like this and the result is a very solid case which can fit in all my current essentials, keep the Switch clean and safe, and it’s not too bulky, considering what it’s got inside. Big thumbs up.

It does feel, from what all the indie developers are saying, that the indie game audience is moving to Switch nowadays (on console at least, there's always a good audience for them on PC). It used to be that the 360 was the place where indie games did best, then Microsoft kind of abandoned pushing them. Then Sony pushed them for a while but seems to have given up on even showing an indie reel at their conferences anymore. Meanwhile Nintendo are dedicating entire conferences to them and aren't afraid to include them in their main conferences too.

Now you could argue that this is because they need them to fill the gaps between their own first-party output, but whatever the reason I think they're cultivating a very nice environment for indie developers to thrive in, and encouraging their fanbase to check out what the indie game scene has to offer.
