You see it's this kind of obfuscating bollocks that I find insufferable on rllmuk.

30fps is clearly fine for this game because it was designed around that. Obviously 60 would be smoother but it doesn't impact on the gameplay, it being a turn based fucking strategy title. Doom on the other hand was designed to run at 60fps, and that's from the developers themselves. It was a gameplay decision.

But no one's allowed to discuss it are they, lest they want to be mobhanded out of here.

I think it's fine to discuss it, just not fine to call anyone who says it really doesn't bother them wrong. For many, the idea of portable DOOM is pretty exciting - and the videos make it look pretty bloody brilliant. For others, they can't get past the fact it's 30 fps. Both perfectly valid arguments - but for some reason the "60 fps or nothing" crowd don't seem to be able to accept that the "I just want to play it portable crowd" are anything other than blind muppets that will just suck up anything that's thrown their way on Switch.

We get that it would have been better at 60fps, we just don't agree that being only 30fps will instantly totally kill it and make it wholly inferior and that anyone buying it is a mug.

Another version and option out there is a good thing. People can make their own choices based on their own priorities.

Doom is likely to be an inferior port but that's a fact due to its hardware.  It is what it is.  Me saying this should not prevent anyone from getting it if they want portable Doom.  Personally I wish they'd cut more to get the framerate up but perhaps they'd have to cut back too much. Stanley I think was calling out Dekay as it looks like the Doom fps discussion has upset the Switch love in and has caused upset on this thread as a result there's been a load of passive aggressive unfunny framerate jokes.

And does it affect the gameplay? Have any of us played it?

Of course it affects gameplay, that's not to say it won't be playable at all, or be awful, but it's not in line with the developers original vision.

All of that is besides the point. It's a relevant discussion and people shouldn't be made to feel unwelcome for holding an opposing opinion, one which is hardly controversial in the grand scheme of things.

All perfect valid points, no reason for dekay to take the piss about frame rates in every bloody post.

Ultra Street Fighter II Had A Better UK Debut Than Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite

Quote

Ultra Street Fighter II might be considered a lazy (if fun) piece of Switch software, but it would seem that the all-important Street Fighter brand is more powerful than you might assume.

According to the latest retail sales figures in the UK, the Switch title had a stronger debut than the recent Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite.

The new brawler - which launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC last week - entered the UK physical retail chart in a disappointing 12th position. In the PlayStation 4 single-format chart it limped in at 16, while on the Xbox One chart it didn't even make the top 40.

For a top-tier Capcom fighter which has benefitted from months of hype, it's a disastrous showing - made all the more embarrassing by the fact that Ultra Street Fighter II enjoyed a stronger debut week on a single system, and it was little more than a warmed-up serving of Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, a title which is almost a decade old.

What Capcom itself will make of these figures is anyone's guess, but the fact that a game which has apparently taken very little effort to create can commercially out-perform one of the company's biggest AAA multi-format offerings for the year - and in one of the territories where Nintendo is traditionally weakest, the UK - then it will certainly give the publisher pause for thought.

NOSTALGIA WINS (sadly).

It's going to be a different port - can we get away from this 'inferior' stuff as that infers it's worse in every way, which it won't be. It'll run in a lower resolution, and with less graphical trickery, and yes with fewer frames per second - but it'll do all that on a machine that's not much bigger than a standard controller and can be taken out of the house to wherever the user wants. It'll do all that on a machine that can switch between the TV and it's own screen in seconds. It'll do all that on a machine that means I can play at home, play in the taxi, play on the plane, play in my hotel room etc etc

It'll be worse in some ways, better in others - not just 'inferior' in every way.

I find the whole 'happy hivemind' argument incredibly irritating not because I won't hear criticism of it but because it's a misdiagnosis and a great deal to do with the way in which some people hope to define themselves as maverick truth tellers in opposition to what they perceive as 'the herd'.

Homing in on this because it perfectly shows what I've seen over the past week in regards to clippa's behaviour in this thread. And frankly, not just clippa in the Switch thread but a type of behaviour that i've seen all over Rllmuk during the past few years. I've seen it in the politics threads, the Sarkeesian threads, the film threads and plenty of game related threads.

The moment a particular thread gets an X amount of positive feedback, people start coming in with their own negative opinion. Positive feedback continues? Shit all over the people that are positive. Get called out over it? Quickly say you're not at fault and that it's all your opinion and people should learn to respect other viewpoints. But whatever you do, never back down and just leave people be. No, no, that would be giving up and hanging your head up in shame! Can't have that!

It's quite rich to say others can't accept an opposing viewpoint if you're the one who keeps coming back insisting that you're in the right. Any sane person knows that if you keep conversing with idiots, then you're just as much at fault as them. But ofcourse, this forum has its own collection of needy know-it-alls that just have to put a particular viewpoint in a conversation, lest it be forgotten and people become *shudder* too positive. So there's no chance of people backing off when people disagree with them on a negative viewpoint.

It comes off as this supremely insecure thing to do. The fact that you need to tell people out loud that they should accept opposing viewpoints. Considering the behaviour i'vee seen here and elsewhere, I'd say it's mostly a case of projection.

Have a nice day.

I'm assuming you know LucasARTS games in general.

They've done their best.  The dpad can handle dialog and verbs, they've used the right stick for a slower cursor but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't awkward at times.

Not affected our immense enjoyment of the first 3 hours though, be sure to turn on the in jokes.

I'm a longtime lurker and just wanted to say that watching this thread over the last week or so has been really interesting.

The Switch is obviously not a perfect machine. But what I've found is, particularly as a time-poor, older gamer with a couple of young kids, it is the perfect machine for me. I love my PS4 but the reason I might well happily pay more for a Switch version of a game I can get on any platform is that I have a machine that I can commute with and take on holiday full of the same kind of games that I play as a committed gamer and a range which I can also share with my family. The positivity towards the Switch isn't blind: it reflects the fact that it's doing something absolutely core that no other machine does.

I totally understand that 60FPS is ideal for Doom and that 30FPS represents a serious compromise. But anyone who can't also see that there's a real case for buying it on radically different grounds is assuming that everyone has the same priorities. The positivity I've seen in this thread is a really joyous reflection of the Switch's specificity. I find the whole 'happy hivemind' argument incredibly irritating not because I won't hear criticism of it but because it's a misdiagnosis and a great deal to do with the way in which some people hope to define themselves as maverick truth tellers in opposition to what they perceive as 'the herd'.

I totally understand the Switch fits in with lifestyle arguments.  I'm currently abroad in a hotel room in Phuket with my Switch as we speak.  I love it.  I do think there is mob of people who what to shutdown any perceived negative conversation regarding the Switch.  The dissenting voices could do with better delivery of their message but if you look past that you'll see the points being made but there is a core group that would rather attack the person rather than the point which is a shame.

Sorry but I disagree.  You'll could arguably say any poor representation of a game on the Switch is 'different' port.  Let's not sugar coat it.  Let us call a duck a duck.  You'll could excuse any lazy port as different.  The Switch has caused this weird effect of wanting every main line game to be squeezed into Switch form for portability sake but the fact of the matter is some games may not be suitable for the Switch due to the limitations of its hardware.   Doom may just be one of these games.  Not saying it's unplayable but if you have another console or PC it is the 'better' way to play it but granted not the only way.  No one is throwing out their bigger platforms just because everything has become portable.

Was just playing in work over lunch, took the joycons off and just used the touch screen to play.

Lovely.

I was really hoping we could use on joycon as a pointer, like a wiimote, but it’s not too bad. Touchscreen is nice :)

I was just going to down vote this but no, I'm not petty, and it achieves nothing.

No one has berated anyone for simply being positive. That's in your head. What's happening is that anyone who wants to discuss something that the majority don't like get told to fuck off and start a thread about it, regardless whether it's relevant, such as with Doom.

And then even when no one is even discussing it at all jokes are made, such as dekay (and others) taking the piss out of anyone who mentions frame rates. Mocking them.

And now you're trying to tell me that it's the other way around?

Nah.

Just had a chat with my brother and his dock is warped and his Switch unit has the small crack near the screw on the top.

He's sent it back and Nintendo have contacted him and told him it's all user error and he has to pay £179 to get it repaired.

Obviously he's seriously fucked off!

You don't have to have played it to understand the difference between 30 and 60 fps. This has already been explained and I see no point in going over it again if you can't accept the facts.

I understand the difference. I'd like to know if it affects real actual people playing it rather than just suggestions based on numbers.

Thanks for such a measured response. I definitely agree that people on both sides could be less dismissive but I'd also point out in terms of shutting down debate that this debate has completely dominated the last ten or so pages of the topic. I think there's sometimes a difference between people expecting everyone to suddenly agree with them and having the room to state their opinion.

Another console or PC is not the 'better' way to play it if you want to play it on the move though. If you want to play at home, and away from home seamlessly. In that case, Switch is absolutely the 'better' way to play Doom. You're hung up on the graphics piece. Not that Doom on Switch looks terrible anyway - it really looks rather lovely IMO!

I'm not saying every game should be ported - of course that's not the case. But you do appear to be perfectly happy to ignore the footage we've seen of Doom so far which looks perfectly OK. It looks great actually, and it certainly doesn't make me think - oh, they shouldn't have done that.

You said you can't tell the difference between 30 and 60fps, so perhaps for you it wouldn't make any difference. But if you understand the difference, in theory at least, then you understand why iD designed it originally to run at the higher frame rate.

Just because we have no, or very few actual hands on impressions, doesn't change the facts.

There's no difference in iD making Doom 60fps than there is Nintendo making many of their own games run at that frame rate. The game play is much smoother and responsive and suits those games.
