However I'd imagine the team were up against an extremely tight time limit, which Bethesda would have insisted upon to grab the holiday season and early adopters. I'd guess that an extra 6 months dev and an aggressive fx/resolution cull would have seen them hit the 60 mark.

Well to prove that theory, likely that the same port house will be handling Wolfenstein II so we can see how they do that one given they now have experience on the engine. The evidence is that they've already taken advantage of most of the obvious 'optimisation' tricks as-is. The existing home console versions required some serious use of AMD's GPU compute ability to hit 60fps.

NBA 2K just did the same thing, pared back visuals and halving the update rate, looks fine in isolation.

This 60fps thing is getting annoying but I'll give my anecdotes:

I worked with a developer who couldn't see the difference between 50/25fps. We called him Strider 2 frames.

I really dislike 3 player mode on MK8 when it drops to 30fps

I really disliked the PS4 version of The Last Of Us because the 60fps frame rate looked too smooth. Perhaps the cinematic feel somebody mentioned was in play.

Sign me up as one who prefers 60 FPS and loves the fact Nintendo always chooses to lock that shit down as much as possible on its own hardware. But on the other hand, already have had plenty great 30 FPS games on the Switch both first and third party like BotW, Xenoblade, Mario+Rabbids and soon Skyrim. I would have liked Doom to be in the category of Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and ARMS but sadly it just doesn't seem to be on the cards. :(

That won't prove a damn thing I'm afraid, I fully expect Wolf to run at 30 too. They will likely be under just as much of a tight schedule as they were with Doom, perhaps more so. Anything they learned from that will be negated by the specifics that Wolf brings to the table. Time, (and money) as it is in a great deal of life, is the main arbiter in creative endeavors like this.

Gamers are strange, as soon as you mention these things you hear cries of 'you hate games' or 'graphics don't matter'

Why the need to shut down these conversations, if you find it 'unfun' skip past the post or put posters on ignore.

See what I mean:

Trust me, I have absolutely nothing to be smug or boastful about.

Then you should probably be less smug and boasty when posting, because even if you don't think so that's exactly how you're coming across in this thread.

I didn't love Inside as much as everyone else did, it was definitely interesting in places and admittedly had a fairly spectacular ending, but overall I found it to be, like Limbo before it, a diversion rather than an obsession. I don't quite see why these games get the love that they do, neither are bad games but neither lived up to the reception in my opinion. I always felt with Limbo, in particular, that most of what people raved about was stuff that had already been done in lesser known indie games before then. Some games just get lucky, and earn a ton of attention.

For example, I don't see much in the way of people talking about The Bridge, and not just on the Switch but anywhere. It's a very clever game, and I honestly think that anyone who loved Fez or Braid would immediately see the quality in The Bridge, yet it's one of history's overlooked titles. A bit like The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. Why did Playdead get the luck that an indie developer usually needs to break out?

The Witness would be a good game for Switch, obviously not too many would buy it again but I can see how it could become a must-buy with the portable nature added in.

Doesn't this debate over framerates originate in issues of feel and control, rather than how smooth it looks? If a game refreshes at 60 frames at 60 Hz, there is an input lag of 16.667 ms - at 30 frames at 60 Hz there is an input lag of 33.33 ms. Correct? So effectively a doubling of the input lag?

My point is that with Doom, the fast twitchy controls have always been a staple of the gameplay - and 60 frames per second may be vital in achieving that experience.
