Doom at 30fps is disappointing because it's is the kind of game that ideally should have higher frames especially if you've experienced it at 60fps.  It's disappointing just like if Mark kart 9 or Splatoon 3 would be if they were announced to have 30fps. I was definitely going to double dip but not sure.  I love playing split with joy cons and was very interested to try motion aiming in Doom so may dip.

Perhaps if id had handled the conversion themselves it would be a different story, but I agree. ARMS, Splatoon, Mario Kart etc. all excel at 60fps, and so does Doom. I don't think anyone is being meanspirited or picky by worrying about it being 30fps. It's an extremely fast arcade like game that feels smooth as hell at 60fps, and I worry that it just won't feel the same.

The thought of playing it in handheld mode makes it more desirable but I'm concerned that once the novelty wears off it will always be considered an inferior port.

If it was 30, your enjoyment is immediately invalidated.

Why is it that Mario Kart, Arms and Splatoon are all celebrated for being 60fps, yet whenever someone raises concerns about a game not hitting that, they're perceived as being picky?

It is a damn shame they've couldn't have gone the extra mile and gone to 60fps. There's no getting around the fact that this type of game/genre hugely benefits from a high frame rate.

However I'd imagine the team were up against an extremely tight time limit, which Bethesda would have insisted upon to grab the holiday season and early adopters. I'd guess that an extra 6 months dev and an aggressive fx/resolution cull would have seen them hit the 60 mark.

Still, it's a great achievement and I hope it sells well. The ID engine must be mightily impressive.

Going to play devil's advocate here towards those who are big on the 60fps for a game like doom (bare in mind i'm all for it especially with more competitive games, racers, shooters and the like) -

And for the record I think the 60fps v 30fps is just an elitist thing (which is generally what a lot of us are on here, avvid gamers who spend quite a bit of time and money on our hobby)

I have a gaming pc and have access to an awful lot of power there, that wouldn't mean I always pick up a game on there over the Switch down to it's fps. The switch is aimed at a slightly different and to be far more versatile. It's not as powerful a machine as my pc and I wouldn't expect it to be, it's ultimately a tablet... Having the power it does within that little tablet is a feat in itself so if I have to sacrifice some fps I am happy to do so.

I think with games like Doom on the switch they are -

A) Still finding what works with the console, what it's limits are etc. It's like the first of the PS4 games, they were nowhere near as good as today's crop of games, equally so the PC has had years and years of continued development to reach the heights it is today. The Switch has had months and yet people expect a machine that small to compete on par with a form of gaming that has had years and years to perfect what it does.

B) It's going to be the happy medium. Choosing 30fps instead of 60 means they can still keep the game looking pretty good, which at the end of the day will be what the 'average' person is going to be bothered about. I have a couple of friends who probably can't tell you what fps means and yet they play games a fair bit, more than me, most likely. They would pick the game up based on how good it looks. The graphics can be a big selling factor to a game. In order to keep them looking so good they have had to sacrifice a bit of performance.

I can see why people would be miffed at spending full price on a game they may have already experienced on another machine at 60fps but I don't think this version of the game is aimed at you so much, you've had your fill and if you haven't already then stop moaning and go and get it on another machine. It's aimed at those who are constantly on the move and don't have time to sit at home playing video games. That may not be a large market, but it's a market that would have been unreachable if not for the switch.

It's also worth noting the game was originally designed for much more powerful devices. Doom was first released a month after the switch was announced. It had already been designed, tested etc for a pc, ps4 & xbox one. They have had what, a year to get it switch ready? I think they've done well for a first attempt.

Anyway's onto a game I am far more interested in. I think wargroove will scratch the itch for now. I'm big into Fire emblem at the moment and so that with fire emblem warriors should keep me satisfied a while until a real fire emblem game comes out on the console :)

Every single one of us needs to buy both DOOM and FIFA. Don't give me any excuses, none of them wash. "I'll never play it!" is utter bollocks, you definitely will, because the Switch forces you to play stuff on it. "I already have it on a superior platform!" similarly stinks, because you can't take that superior platform anywhere you like with you.

Lol, no. I haven't played DOOM yet but I can pick up the PS4 version of DOOM brand new now for under a tenner, I'm not going to spend 30-40 quid more on an inferior version just because I can play a few hours of it outside the house (which I actually won't do, I played it docked 99% of the time).

I'm happy games like this are coming to the Switch for people for whom the portability aspect is important, but I'll buy them on the machine that plays them best. The idea that all Switch owners NEED to support buying more expensive, technically inferior versions of games when they have the choice is kind of laughable.

Concerns? Some of the talk about Doom running at 30fps in this thread is written as if it were some rotten crime against humanity.

I was really just making a bad joke about the way the last few pages have gone from "wow, the Switch is loads of fun and look at all these games coming out for it" to dull FPS talk.

To answer your question though, there is nothing wrong with being concerned about Doom being 30FPS, but that's not how most of the posts come across. They come across as "Doom at 30FPS is going to be unplayable and how could Bethesda ever have the gall to release it at anything less than 60? Anyone interested in it is an idiot."

I mean, I'm not interested in it. I've got the game on PC and I'm definitely not buying it again on Switch, no matter how good the port is. But I'm not about to shit on anyone else's excitement for the game either by saying "If you're playing Doom at 30fps you're not really playing Doom"

SteamWorld Dig 2 is fantastic. That comes from someone who has actually at least played some of it.

Also, I'm sure it runs at 60fps which makes my view even more justified.

Buy it instead of talking about frame rates and wondering when Golf Story (a game I don't think we've seen beyond trailers) comes out.

I liked the first game, but this is more than just more of the same. Joy in a download.

I'm pretty sure no one said that, or anything even close to that.

I don't know how many fps it is, sorry.

:)

Had just over £30 in my eshop account and just purchased Thimbleweed Park which I am assured runs at 62.87562 frames per second. Please tell me Steamworld Dig  2 is no worse, I have £15.04 waiting to be spent!!!
