While obviously I get that 60fps is better, I'm not going to say that 30fps kills it for me. It's still portable Doom. And they do say it plays really well and is a very impressive port overall.

I'm still in - I'm one of the useless tards that can't honestly tell the difference between a lot of this 60/30/1080/720/540 stuff anyway.

I just think Doom really needs 60fps due to the arcade style of the game. For example, Wolfenstein probably wouldn't be a issue at 30fps.

Sure. But then, they say* it plays well. And that's the most important piece for me.

If they'd said "nah this doesn't work", then alarm bells. But they specifically say it plays really well. They are impressed with it overall. The hope still lingers for me.

* Did say, video has gone now. Guess they were a bit premature.

Even if they have the excuse of being portable versions those games need to be played at 60fps. Won't be bothering with the double dip for Doom then.

So even if every review says it's a great portable version of Doom, you'll rule it out just because of that one thing?

Horses for courses, but I do find it odd how hung-up over technicalities some people get now*

*Not aimed primarily at you that VNX1, just a general observation with framerate, resolution stuff these days.

Bullet points from the DF Video, stolen from GAF.

  • Most ambitious cross platform Switch port yet
  • "Utterly insane, how did they do that?"
  • Post process pipeline mostly intact
  • 30fps cap was "inevitable"
  • Depth of field reduced but not removed
  • Resolution is lower on Switch, dynamic, unsure of exact count
  • Reduced textures
  • "It's a good port!"

All taken from playing in handheld mode. Regardless of what you think about 30/60 FPS the fact they've seemingly managed to get a game like Doom running on Switch is seriously impressive.

30fps for games which are action heavy is kind of ridiculous in 2017. But unfortunately that's already a lost argument as 1) people don't care, 30fps is more cinematic, we can't see above 30fps anyway, lower fps is just as responsive, more nonsense, etc and 2) the gaming industry appears to be at the whim of the TV industry what with the focus on 4K resolution (much to the chagrin of developers). Yeah it looks amazing but plays like shit. GG.

EDIT: inb4 people start moaning about fps in the Switch thread.

There is some debate raging about the DF analysis now - apparently they did play it at an event, but captured no video and have done most of their stuff since on a PC version running to 'Switch spec'.

They've not been able to do a proper, full DF analysis on the actual game on actual hardware - so it sounds like they've jumped the gun a bit. None of the stuff in their video was captured by them from Switch hardware.

Might make no difference in the end, but seems an odd approach for them really.

So they've played the game at a hands-on event in portable mode, weren't given any specifics, didn't record any footage, "analyzed" the footage from the Direct instead and built a "Switch PC" to test the PC version with it

Frame rate directly influences the fluidity of the game play.

Boot up a SNES emulator with Super Mario World. Set frameskip to 1 and then tell me that it still plays just as well as before.

Or imagine Mario Kart 8 and Titanfall 2 at half their frame rates. 1.0

EDIT: I'm sure it's a terrific piece of work from a technical port standpoint and I imagine it will play just fine but once you've played it at 60fps (or higher in my case) there's no reason (for me) to go back to the inferior Switch version.

I get it. But let's not pretend we're living in a world where 60fps is the norm. It's not, across a lot of games on a lot of systems.

I'm not saying 60fps is not a great aim, I'm just trying to say I don't think a game not hitting that should be an instant dismissal. But what do I know, I don't think in a real-world scenario (i.e. not playing them directly side-by-side) I could reliably tell one from the other anyway.

I don't really have much hope for Skyrim hitting 60 now, which is a shame. I can handle 3rd-person affairs such as Bloodborne and BotW at 30/sub-30 pacing but nothing in the first person perspective. I find those headache inducing.

Considering it's 30 on PS4 and Bone I genuinely have no idea how you were expecting Switch to hit 60.

Edit - Also, Skyrim can be played in 3rd person. ;)

Yeah same here. Don't want to appear churlish about it, but the 60fps gameplay really was important imo.
