When you say the switch do you mean the tablet? So could I in theory be playing a game on tv but have earphones in the tablet without the tablet being turned on? Like just have it sat by my side?

Nope as it has to be docked to display on the telly, it still has a headphone port on the switch even when docked - you may need a longer headphone cable is all.

Oh right. I don't think I could handle a 5meter cable that I have to keep putting in and out and stretching all over the coffee table etc. I've watched some videos and you can get these bluetooth transmitters that you plug into the tablet and use blue tooth ear/headphones etc. That might be the best option for now.

Which is the same as virtually every console ever.

No it's not. My ps4 pad has earphone sockets. It's so nice, can just plug them in and so the wires are only from my hands to my ears. It's how I watch a lot of tv/movies on my PS4 too.

I do think the Switch has incredible potential, I think the key is to keep releasing old games. The problem is that these old games are way too expensive, it's like they had streetfighter and bomberman selling for about 50 quid each. If they just released the originals without bells and whistles, like if you could play SF2 in bed or on a bus etc for 5 quid I probably would. I can imagine all of us have old nostalgic games that we'd find cool to play on a portable device.

I know this is controversial and winds people up but 'the netflix model' is so perfect for this machine and I find it frustrating they are limiting themselves so much. If you paid 30quid a month and just had access to Nes,Snes,3DS, Gamecube, N64, Wii titles etc. Imagine it, I'd even enjoy playing HomeAlone and WaynesWorld on the Snes in bed. That's Nintendo's strength, their back catalog (as well as the 2-3  amazing first party titles they bring out every year)

It depends if you care about sound or not, it’s laughably  bad from the ports on PS4/Xbone pads esp when the consoles are kicking out HD audio and decent surround sound.

I use wired headphones into amp or mix amp so have the cables and not bothered about wires.

If you invest in one of the Bluetooth transmitters you could connect it to your TV headphone socket.  You would then be able to listen to TV, movies and games perfectly synced through your headphones as well.

A PS4 controller surely doesn't sync very well with various levels of tv panel latency anyway.

Yeah it's interesting you mention that, for the longest time I've just presumed my earphones were dodgy. I've never noticed if having the controller plugged in makes a difference? Perhaps it's impossible to get perfect sound via a bluetooth device on a console and that's why Nintendo went against it, as when it comes to things like this (consumers having comfortable experiences) they are perfectionists.

Yeah, as already mentioned the PS4 sound through the pad is garbage, or at least it was when I played through Bloodborne.

Wireless headphones are the way forward, either that or simply telling everyone else living in your proximity to fuck off and move out if they don't like your video game sounds.

Most wireless headphones are equally garbage esp ‘gamer’ ones so imo wired is still the way forward, I use my decent headphones on all my consoles as well as everything else so seems silly to pay a load of money for another set of headphones that will be worse - I even find charging to be more of an inconvenience than trailing wires!

I just really don't understand what you're on about most of the time. The Switch is doing well, and Nintendo are having one of their best ever years.

It doesn't just have potential it is already realising that potential and has been since day one really.

And as if anyone is going to pay £30 per month to play old SNES games. That's  £360 a year.

Honestly.

Got stuck into Kingdom: New Lands and Project Octopath properly this weekend.

Kingdom is really lovely. It's more of a roguelike tower defence game than anything else, and not at all an adventure game (which it's tagged as on the eShop) with only one short but gorgeous 2d strip of land to ride back and forth on, which regenerates randomly each time you die/start over. You can canter from one end of the game to the other in about a minute, and yet there's a strong sense of mystery and discovery as you find and interact with landmarks and NPCs, and figure out how your interactions affect the way the game plays. It reminds me a lot of The Settlers 2, but condensed into a much smaller, side-scrolling area. You'll be starting the game over a bunch of times as you experiment with the game's systems and fuck things up, but the art style and music are so wonderful, and the game so beguiling and soothing, it feels worth it each time. It's only four quid on greenmangaming though, so unless you have to have it on Switch, you're better off getting it for PC. Oh, and there are framerate issues with it on the Switch, so hopefully that'll be patched.

I finished Primrose's path in Project Octopath tonight and was kind of blown away by how good it was. It has all the traditional turn-based goodness of an old SNES Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy but with current generation production values and a surprisingly engrossing story for a JRPG. Sex work and domestic abuse were not what I was expecting. The voice acting is great, the music is fantastic and even the maps and menus are made with obvious care. Demos almost always put me off games, but this one has turned my indifference into real excitement. Game's ace.

I've played about 10 minutes of this and put it down. Not because I don't enjoy it but because I was enjoying it loads :D and I would rather experience it all with the full game :) Very much looking forward too this.

I've only played it for 10 minutes and I've interacted with all the characters in the town.

Maybe not 15 then but it felt it.

Lengthy back story cut scene with about 30 pages of dialog.

Cuts to backstage, more lengthy, repetitive dialog.

Someone says something like "Let's call in <character b> and talk to them a lot more>".

I quit.

Not my kind of thing apparently.
