unless its its stripped right back to basics (and it certainly looks like it from those pics)

Does it? I know my eyes are old and everything, but really - it's not a massive difference at all. "stripped right back" is just nonsense.

So any impressions of the Project Octopath Traveller Demo? I've got it downloaded for my train journey home.

Played for an hour. Looks and sounds very nice. Fair bit of text to get through initially but gives you plenty of battles after that. Reminds me of a mash up FFVI and Bravely Default, which is high praise indeed.

A few tips: It took me a while to realise you can save your boosts then press R multiple times to let rip when their shield is broken. I inadvertently pressed B while walking around which toggles walk and run, so thought it was a bit slow! That really should be mapped to another button. Also, stack up on healing grapes before heading out of town. Failed the boss the first time and as someone mentioned they need to let you skip the cutscene. My only other annoyance is some of the text in one of the menus was microscopic and I had to get off my lazy bum to read it.

Will be awesome, can't wait/10

Played my first hour of switch today. This thing is absolutely awesome! I'm sorry @Capwn, but the idea that this screen is too small to be worth playing on is ludicrous. This is the most delicious slice of gaming tech I've ever seen! I would say my only issue so far is getting used to the compromised ergonomics of handheld mode. But what can you do - it's always going to be a compromise and I think they've probably made sensible decisions here. Right, time for hour 2...

Up and down like a fiddlers elbow when there is action

The actual experience of playing it is very smooth and stable. So as long as its as good as that on Switch itll be great. Obviously there will be trade offs somewhere, but it looks great so far.

How long is the Octopath demo? Looking forward to giving that a try this evening.

Took me 50 mins as the male character. After the 'thanks for playing' screen I duelled a few people and did a very short quest to reunite a daughter with her drunk degenerate father.

Starting the female character now.

October is going to be one hell of an expensive month: Wolfenstein 2, Evil Within 2 and a little game called Mario fucking Odyssey (working title).

Please empathy this post for my wallet.

I hear you. I'm going on holiday in November so I'm supposed to be saving for that, but nnggggg, must - buy - games.

Hopefully the appearance of those Arcade Archives means they've ditched the idea of giving access to an online-enabled NES game with the online sub each month.

And that their Arcade Archives extend to F-Zero AX and Mario Kart GP.

The best thing about having Doom on the switch is you can just turn it on and BAM!, it's there. Takes a few minutes for the PS4 version to get you into the game. Hopefully those loading times after you die will also be a thing of history.

lol

I'm not really feeling Octopath. It's passable, but I think the art style is putting me off. I only played about 30 minutes but it hasn't got me interested.

Ban this sick filth.

To be honest I wasn't feeling the art style either and thought it leaned heavily on its visual gimmick. Thankfully it seems like there's an actual game in there as well so I'll definitely be picking it up once it's out. I want more turn-based-em-ups on my Switch!

iD are geniusues, it will deffo be 60fps.

Im looking forward to seeing how Doom performs rather than how it looks in handheld mode.  It will live or die based on performance.  Id rather they make cutbacks to get a consistent or locked 60fps.  Bodes well as ID are very techie heavy.

Inspired by the deals people posted at Game and then the Tesco £25 off voucher, I went in with a 20% new customer discount at Very.

Tomorrow I'll be the proud owner of a pro controller and Mario + Rabbids. At the end of October I'll have a Switch to use them with!

If you weren't excited about anything on that Direct - you may as well bail out.  It's not for you.  Move on.  Play big telly games on big telly consoles at home and be happy.

I've played 2 hours of Octopath now and I really enjoy it.  The battle system makes a lot more sense to me than Bravely Default's did (another game I really enjoyed)... and it's really quite, well, 'adult' in theme.  I think the potential for story is strong.

I'm in.

If you use switch purely as a regular big telly console and never take it out of the dock, you're missing about 60% of the reason it's so amazing.

On the flip side... I've played 200+ hours of Zelda and countless hours on other games on the system... the vast majority of it is undocked.

I *want* to play Skyrim on the go.

I *want* to play Doom on the go.

can't wait
