Pop quiz, I'm after a single player game. At a glance it looks like either Cave Story or Shovel Knight are the best options, I love Metroidvanias and haven't played either before. Is there a forum preference?

Shovel Knight isn't Metroidvania, but it is good fun. The Treasure Trove version, with additional characters, even more so. Definitely recommended; it's challenging, even frustratingly so at times, but those times are spaced out evenly; the bosses are particularly delightful in their pitch between challenge and reward.

I've found it to be a really nice sequencer between marathon sessions of Zelda which, at 120 hours and counting, are very welcome.

After having a similar dilemma recently I purchased Cave Story and I'm really happy with it. Definitely scratched that single player itch I had with my Post Zelda Switch.

Aw. It's one of my favourite genres. It's like you've said "I know you love your mam 'n that, but she's a right cow"

I know we all like different things, but I'd be interested to see your working if you've got a minute. Despise is a strong word, what about those games turns you off so hard?

Strikers 1945 is a weird one, it kind of falls in between two stools, it's more your old school shmup with fewer, faster bullets, there are lots of fast sniper bullets so there's more replaying and memorisation needed to get good at it rather than just relying on your reactions and on the fly strategizing, but there's also a fair few bullets knocking about, especially during the bosses, it's a bit half n half and it's NOT easy. A lot of long in the tooth veteran shmuppers have trouble with this game. The game also has rank, so the better you do, the faster the bullets get.

Don't get this if you're dipping your toe in. It's not a good place to start.

Infinite Burst just came out on steam, that's a really good place to start, I reckon. Also on 360/xbone backwards compatible.

You cancel the bullets of any enemy you shoot so if you're just playing for survival, you'll get through it no bother, you get loads of health pickups near the end of each level, the music is fab and it's very pretty and polished, it's really good fun. and as you get better, you can start pushing yourself further up the screen, taking more risks and playing for score.

Thanks for that clippa.

I don’t enjoy the genres reliance on mass bullet formations nor distracting visuals. My brain is not wired up to gain enjoyment from those mechanics. The genre also usually then adds further mechanics, on top of what I already consider confusing, which seals the the deal for me. It's too much for my brain to cope with and not fun.

What I do enjoy is moving over interesting terrain, where I’m occasionally given the opportunity to admire it.  I like interesting enemy designs, which look pretty and which again I can see and admire, before blowing to bits

I think it mainly boils down to preferring tracking enemies and picking them off before they can hit me. Bullet hell games are more about 'evading' things, usually a great many things, too many things. I derive great enjoyment more from blasting stuff/enemies and using anticipation/predictive firing skill, whilst dodging around. Pure eye hand coordination with a simple set of rules. If I could describe it, it’s a punchy impact style of play, which traditional shooters inherently offer.

I hope that covers it! ;)
