My current work around is having the Switch propped up between a folder and a pile of books.

Played for about an hour using both characters in Gunbarich and cannot get past 3-3 with either. It gets brutal when you have to block/avoid the enemy balls as well as keep yours going. Screen can be a little hard to read as well but I think it just requires a bit more concentration. Think this might be one where I turn on infinite lives/continues. Looks great in tate with scanlines.

 

I've been won over by Psikyo being a bit bonkers that, despite not being a huge STG fan, I've picked up Strikers too.

Pretty much! All the previews have been really positive so I'll give it a go. 

Doubt I'd look twice if it had a generic soldier marine skin.

But then generic marine type characters wouldn't be pulling off crazy moves the kind seen in the previews. It's probably got as much in common with Disgaiea as those types of games really.

Design-wise I actually prefer the Rabbids, but Nintendo being involved gives it the seal of quality. It's certainly nothing to do with Mario, Animal Crossing Rabbids would be the dream.

I'm tempted to get Strikers 1945 but I've seen it described as a bullet hell style shooter.. which I despise. It doesn't look like one to me though from yt vids I've seen. Anyone care to give their opinion one way or the other?

I'm no expert, but...I wouldn't call it bullet hell in the way that I would for Cave shmups.  Don't get me wrong, it's tough (for me at least) but it's certainly not bullet hell.

Pop quiz, I'm after a single player game. At a glance it looks like either Cave Story or Shovel Knight are the best options, I love Metroidvanias and haven't played either before. Is there a forum preference?

I played some of that Strikers 1945 last night, but probably spent more time trying to find a makeshift stand solution for portrait mode...ended up using the hori hard case. If Ikaruga is coming to Switch I'll buy a proper stand...any chance?

Cave Story for sure. Shovel Knight isn't a Metroidvania, it's an old school platformer with traditional levels. It's hard as nails too. CS is a great Metroidvania though.

Shovel Knight for sure. It's not hard at all, In fact the difficulty is really spot on.
