Advice needed please.

I need to get something new to play on my Switch, and I'm torn between Splatoon and Cave Story.

I like the look of Splatoon but have little to no interest in online play. Would mostly be buying it for single player and the odd dabble online, but it's really not my bag. I play Switch petty much exclusively on handheld. Does Splatoon play well like this? Or would I get destroyed online by people using controllers.

Or do I save myself about 23 quid and buy Cave Story, which although overpriced in itself, I've never played before but I imagine offers a more complete single player experience.

I assume you have Mighty Gunvolt Burst already?

Great post. I would say not to bother with Arms. It's not a patch on Zelda, MK or Splatoon and likely will not get played.

I bought SF2 and Binding of Isaac at the beginning of June, barely played them and with how good Splatoon has turned out I doubt I ever will.

Nooooo - Arms is brilliant and I say that as someone who normally is not into to 1 on 1 fighters at all and fairly useless at them - its loads of fun, quirky and something a bit different (which can't be said about Mario Kart, which is well Mario Kart).

But I too haven't put the cart in since Splatoon  2 was released and probably won't again for a little while whilst the addiction is strong - so one to get certainly but probably in a few months once the appeal of Splatoon has worn off - its hard to commit to more than one addicting online game at a time.

So I have owned this console since launch way back in March.

It arrived on the Friday and I had to be on a plane to Sydney first thing the next morning. It was a blessing and a curse...That flight is usually so loooonnnggg... but it flew by (!). Zelda had me utterly transfixed for the entire journey - both there and coming back. And as someone that has never really got into Elder Scrolls - I became totally obsessed with exploring and mastering it. I have NEVER put as many hours into a game as I did that one. All told, 160 of them, and I'm still playing... And as many have said the jump to having a full, uncompromised game with you where ever you are... completely changed the way I play. Giving me gaming time back that would have been impossible before.

The downside to this, is I figured that would be it. The Switch would be a one game system for a very long time. Maybe always.

Then Mario Kart launched and despite owning the Wii U version - I was utterly addicted all over again. It gets everything sooo right. And my boys are the perfect age to join in.

And now Splatoon (which never appealed to me at all). I dont like online shooters and the art style turned me off from what I saw on the Wii U. How wrong I was though - its totally sublime and is the first game to show me the huge appeal of online warfare. I literally can't stop playing - and am always "one more go" 'ing it. It taken up every night for the last week.

In summary I have spent more time playing the switch this year than for the duration of owning both the Xbox One and PS4 combined. It nails everything for me as a gamer - from its portability to its power. I love the little thing in a way I never have previous consoles.. And my kids love it too...

Question for Rllmuk..... I didn't bother with "Arms" as I found the free demo laggy and a bit uncontrollable .... should I?

ARMS is super duper. I really wasn't convinced so bought a physical copy so I could trade back in if I didn't like. There is plenty of fun to be had, lots of depth and a decent amount of variety backed up by the promise of lots of free updates.

Mind me asking where that was from?

Been wanting to grab one for a while now yet everywhere's still out of them still and I'm cautious about buying used for fear of dead pixels / scratched screens and joy cons that don't work properly / need sending back to Nintendo.

Should've dated it's a pre order as well (til 1st September) but at the price save I'm happy to wait lol. Very with 20% new customer discount

ARMS is the best fighter I've ever played.... I've no time for 'combo' games.  ARMS is amazing.

The stock situation is mad.

I think the problem is the lead time to increase production is say 6 months. Basically you may need new factory's or new workers or new machines etc. I don't know. They already increased production after the first few months to 12m by end of year? And I am guessing that was to make sure they had a decent amount for when MARIO comes out at Xmas.

The trouble is that the shortages eventually move from being " Oooh it's a hard product to get." to "Fuck this is so annoying."

In just hope they get it sorted by Xmas.

I ordered mine from very too and it took about a month and a half to arrive (ordered end of may and arrived mid July)

I wasn't in a rush though and it was a big saving so I was happy.

Cave Story is really fantastic and I personally rate it as highly as some of the highly revered titles from which it takes inspiration, such as Super Metroid. There are several endings and different weapons to acquire that will take multiple playthroughs if you want to see it all.

Splatoon 2 is also wonderful, and coming from someone who generally loathes online competitive shooters, the multiplayer is highly addictive, especially as the premise of Turf War means that less-able players can contribute and have fun. If the single player is your main concern, though, I'd take Cave Story.

Yeah, I was a bit underwhelmed by lack of Mario at launch and lack of Virtual Console information (was hoping for some GC news and already had a Wii U for Zelda) that I skipped the launch. If they were easy to come by now I might well be tempted to pick one up but I'm not paying ridiculous Game bundle prices and Amazon wants me to pre-order for late August.  It's fine, hopefully they have some more stock for Mario Odyssey at Christmas but you're right, they need to get this available to buy just on a whim.  Constant stock shortages just looks unprofessional.

Not much Nintendo can do about a parts shortage.

Where are the effects being felt elsewhere in the industry? Nand is part of SSD storage right? I've just had a quick look and am struggling to find items that use Nand tech that are out of stock or hard to come by.

I'm the same. I generally just won't play online shooters but this game is just super fun online. No pressure and super satisfying. I've barely touched the single player

Overcooked is great, me and the wife have been playing it loads. It's just the right side of difficult so that you get some hilarious cock-ups without being overly frustrating. In terms of performance it's fine, the framerate is probably just short of 30 fps but it's steady so it doesn't matter too much. 60fps would be nicer, but that's Unity for you...

It's not Unity's fault. There are far more ambitious games with no issues.

This is not a knock on Overcooked as it is superb.

I fully believe you that there is a shortage.  But from a consumer perspective it only seems to be affecting Nintendo. Which is unprofessional if your competitors have been more organised than you in obtaining component parts. Nintendo are once again taking a short term profit view over a long term view.  Short term they could take a hit if they had to start paying more for component parts but long term you have to start getting Switch on shelves so they get sold and people then buy games which is the money making area of any console.

Good to see Capcom releasing RE. It's another cash in but, the first one at least, is a solid entry. I won't be biting as I've got in on the 3ds but I'm sure there'll be plenty of takers on Switch.

Speaking of 3ds ports.. how good would a Switch Kid Icarus be!? I can't think of a better 3ds title (except Ridge, damn you Namco!!) which would absolutely blow minds on this hardware. The graphics would look astonishing on the Switch's screen. An extra bonus would be that I'll finally be able to play the damn thing properly with duel sticks!

I played Revelations 2 on PS4, it's a pretty decent game. It does have a distinct 'budget' air about it but it was a lot better than Resi 6, faint praise as that may be. Considering the lack of comparable games on Switch at the moment it's probably worth a punt if you didn't pick it up on other consoles.
