How has Arms been working then with people grasping the entirety of the Joycon in their fists? Maybe they've not been standing so far away.

I dunno. Like JPL says they can't be that stupid. It's not like these are broadcasting the same information as the WiiU gamepad. I must have been lucky with mine as that had wicked LoS range.

The preview events have generally had people playing the thing at relatively close range.

The Wii U GamePad connects to the console via proprietary WiFi, not Bluetooth. I've seen it suggested elsewhere that the JoyCons are potentially using particularly low-powered Bluetooth, hence the issues at medium range and beyond.

I'm not really certain of the technology, but if there were a way via a firmware update to boost the signal at the expense of a few hours' battery life (you could cut it in half and it would still be acceptable), that would be a sensible option. I doubt it would be feasible though.

I like Bluntys take on the issue.

Really, if it is that generalized it means it is a know issue, probably a compromise decision.

We are lumpy water sacks that interfere with the wireless signals if they are weak.

Solution, dont block the controllers with your hands.

Dont get too far from the console.

Dont let this first world problem to affect you too much.

Doesn't really work as a put-down when we're talking about a new games console; any problem, even one as severe as the 360's chronic RROD problems are, by default, 'first world problems', but that doesn't make them any less bothersome for potential purchasers.

But ignoring that, the dual solutions of "don't block the controllers with your hands" and "don't get too far from the console" are a little flawed when there are games specifically designed to be played with the controllers clenched in fists, and when people's rooms may not accommodate easily bringing their couch within signal range of the Switch. I imagine I'll be fine - my room's pretty narrow, so I should be close enough to the Switch,* but it doesn't make it less of a design flaw and annoyance for those who will be affected.

Also a bit of a bugger for the precise sorts of 'pass the joycon' multiplayer shenanigans that the 1-2 Switch adverts suggest.

Hopefully it's something that can be fixed with firmware to boost the signal output, or at worst with a later revision set of joycons.

*though I do have a hell of a lot of electronics in that area to add interference - I've never managed to get to the door (about 10 feet away) before the wireless connection between Wii U and Gamepad was lost, and causes my bluetooth keyboard to conk out occasionally; mouse, Dual Shocks and Steam controller are fine, however. I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

To be honest I can't see many families buying multiple Switch's at all, but you talk about "buying digital" as though it's some kind of alien concept.

It's not an alien concept at all given the success of iOS/Android devices, but most people aren't buying digital while a cheaper physical option exists. As nice as the option would be, it's not that big of a deal that it's not there.

It's Bluetooth (right?) so if so will undoubtedly use standard radios. My AirPods can do 10 meters with line of sight, can't see a switch struggling to compete with something so low powered.

The AirPods are being marketed around the W1 chip, which is supposed to enhance the range compared to similar devices. Normal Bluetooth earphones aren't doing that.

Does anyone seriously think there's some fundamental design flaw with joyCon syncing?

Possibly. As one of the first people to reverse-engineer the DS4, Frank Zhao's a great guy to ask. Or Matlo.

@Nate Dogg III?

Someone needs to run a logic analyser on 'em, and it's not simple stuff. A teardown's the first job, though.

Here's the wiki on BLE. The DS4 uses 2.1 Enhanced Data Rate at 3Mbit/s (with a 250Hz polling rate for communication every 4ms; versus 10 for the DS3, and 8 for the 360). Looking at those data and throughput figures, the question that immediately jumps out is whether the JCs are overloaded with tech for their BT-spec at range... And BT 2.1's fast frequency hops and ACKs might be another consideration (supposing interference), but wireless networking's not my thing.

My normal Bluetooth headphones have a much bigger range than 10 metres. I can leave them on my desk at work and go to the loo and they stay connected. That's more than 10m with walls in between.

Anyway, I'm pissed off about the fact that you CANNOT use Bluetooth headphones with the switch after all.

Not to rain on the parade any further than the joycon issue already is, but if you're thinking of using a USB battery pack apparently you need one designed for USB-C devices because the Switch draws 2.6A at 15V. Ars Technica couldn't get it to charge properly with an ordinary 5V battery pack.

USB headsets could only work with the dock if at all.  At this point it seems you'd need to use a headset with 3.5mm socket on the switch to enable voice.

I thought it was confirmed that you use the app and your smart device to do voice chat?

The headphone port on the unit supports mics as well so it seems crazy that you wouldn't be able to use it. I thought the app was for meeting up outside of the game, matchmaking and arranging the game and stuff. How do I play online out and about otherwise, wear two sets of headphones?

Isn't the whole spiel about how you can play in various ways?

I didn't realise one of the caveats was don't get 6ft from your TV. Or put it behind a bit of your body.

When I'm trying to release the tension in my shoulders, for example.

Really can't understand why people are cancelling over this. Do you really not think Nintendo are going to sort it?

Yeah if it affects you then it'll certainly take some of the shine off next Friday, but no where near as much as not having a Switch at all.

It's pretty simple for me. My couch is over 16 feet away from my TV and where the Switch will sit, so I need to know the reality of this problem.

Like I said last night though, I won't be cancelling because I've been waiting too long for Zelda, but if it is a genuine, widespread problem and not just a few early faulty units or something they can easily fix then they've got a serious problem on their hands.

I hope Nintendo make a statement about it sooner rather than later, to put any doubts to bed.

Holy fuck, left this thread alone for half a day and it's gone crazy! What did I miss?

The amount of Nintendo loyalists is gradually eroding under continual fire and sporadic media propaganda being dropped onto the front line.

The murmurings of a lack of control on the left front has led to a few deserters. In dire emergency use your pro controller.

Deserters will be shot or left wandering bereft and alone in no mans land till xmas. Here Broker and Ramone will be hugging and singing Jonah Lewie and playing 1-2 Switch Gunfighter..

Operation Switch is still going ahead. Stay  strong.

No bluetooth headphones is disappointing, not overreact and winge like a child and threaten to cancel the preorder disappointing, but disappointing all the same.  Could that be patched in via a firmware update?

At this point I'm not sure I believe they could implement bluetooth headphones without massive audio lag.  My BT headphones have a detachable cable so I guess it'll be permanently plugged into the switch.

Hold me macosx.

I'm currently watching that hype video NEG posted to regain my faith and strength. I will not budge on my pre-order. I must remain steadfast!
