I was kinda hoping they'd put large re-writable sectors on the game cartridges, that would allow us to store patches or even DLC in certain games.  Would've been very nice.

Breath of the Wild, for instance, uses around 13.4gb on the Switch.  If it used a 16-32gb cartridge, with a 13.4gb non-writable sector, a split writable sector for saves, and another split writable sector for patches/DLC, that would be brilliant.

But it seems that maybe not even your saves get stored on the cartridges, oddly.

Simple answer to that:

TwcbbjM.gif

Writable requires an additional very expensive bit of special memory, while the bulk of the data is hardcoded using mask ROM on carts. Always been the case with solid state games, some games didn't even come with writable memory for savegames and resorted to annoyingly long passwords as an alternative. The modern solution of some flash memory on the device itself seems about as economically justifiable and versatile as could be hoped for.

Edit - got curious, looked up how the 3DS does it, games with writable savegame capability on the cart itself only have 512KB of space for saves, with the exception of a special rare type of cart which actually seems to use flash memory for the entire game so can allow much bigger save files to be used, which shows how expensive writable storage is if even the most current portable system only allows 0.5MB of writable storage normally.

This does mean that the Card2 3DS carts might not have an indefinite lifespan like the typical ROM-based carts as they are technically fully writable and the bits will lose charge over time.

What do we think the chances are of the virtual console not being ready for launch?  We haven't heard much official yet, and it's less than 2 weeks to go...

It wasn't ready at the Wii U or 3DS launches so I would say that it's a safe bet.

Totally sold out this side of the pond, no one's got any you can pre-order and I'm being tempted after selling on my xbone and bonus time round the corner. I do expect/hope there to be stock in a few places places on launch day though.

Right then, had my Switch preview event today in Amsterdam. Tried out as many titles as I could. Games I tried involved Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Zelda, Snipperclips & 1,2 Switch. Here my list, beginning with least favourite and ending with my favourite.

a) 1,2 Switch: Tried out the Marble game and the samurai game. The HD rumble is insane. The rumble outright simulates the weight of the marbles moving inside the box. Crazy. As for the game itself, not really interesting. Anyone who suggested it to be packed in is talking out of his/her arse. The quality just isn't there. I'd rather pay the 300 euros for the Switch alone rather than a Switch with 1,2 Switch included. Nintendo is overstating its appeal I think.

b) Zelda Breath of the Wild: Yes, I know. A bit low on the list. I never really like trying out games of this size at events. Though it did help that Nintendo gave us 20 minutes to try out the game. Everybody kept themselves to the grass area at the beginning. So instead I went to the snow area because I wanted to try out the snowboarding. I can confirm BotW will have the best snowboarding in any Zelda game to date. Other things I noticed is that the game is very quick to make sure you find the right equipment at the right time. It gave the game a nice sense of progress which is difficult to get a feel for at these events.

What was nice is that Aonuma recorded a special video with trying to speak Dutch. Didn't sound half bad for what was obviously his first try. Anyway, the point of the video was that Nintendo has translated a Zelda game fully into Dutch for the first time ever.

c) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Sorry, but MK8 is my favourite Mario Kart so this one goes a long way. Having it on a portable is one of my main reasons for buying the Switch. Also, it's the first game that made me gasp for how SHARP the new screen is. It's fantastic! Got to try out a 4 player race plus battle mode. Having an extra item slot is really nice and improves the game. Also, they've added the feather from Super Mario Kart plus the Boo item which is also quite nice. Might go some way in adressing the item balance with certain overpowered items.(*cough*Bullet Bill*cough*) Battle mode itself feels really fast. Quite a contrast to the one on Wii U.

d) Snipperclips: Got to try out two puzzles because Nintendo had to shorten some demos due to time constraints. This is really great. No, scratch that. This is one hell of a get for Nintendo. Had this been released on its own it would have been one of the indie games of the year. If you want a measure of quality, i'd say e-shop games like Pushmo and especially BoxBoy! are what you should be thinking about. Crazy fun in co-op and the rep confirmed there will be a 4-player free for all mode as well.

e) ARMS. Got only a few rounds of this but man, this was fun. And intense as well I might add. Got my head done in by a girl who was cosplaying as Zelda. That'll teach me then... Anyway, I didnt manage to get the hang of it in the three rounds I played but man was it fun. It's a game that moves at a tremendous pace and it just scream VIDEOGAMES in bright neon letters. Loved it and my best game of the event.

I'll post some thoughts on the hardware later along with some comparison picks.

That will teach you to be looking at the girl in a Zelda outfit rather than paying attention to the game then :P

Good effort on the write up, first time I have heard of the feather and Boo being in MK8D, and I'm pleased to hear it, MK8 felt odd not having 2 items also, so that is a welcome return.

Did you get a choice of class speeds to choose from ? just wondering if the 200cc is back, and if so, if it was playable this time?

Great summary, thanks.

your summary of Arms is exactly what I was hoping for and assuming and good to hear that snipperclips seems as good as promised.

Alas, I didn't get to try out any other speed classes. We raced on Baby Park which is NUTS on 200cc. Felt like 50cc though. 200cc should be back though.

I just cancelled my grey Switch pre-order that I've had since 7:02am on the reveal day...

  Hide contents

and got the neon one instead from Amazon.  Had a first world problems meltdown in the process in case anything went wrong

Won't this push you to the back of the queue? I ordered mine before the restock and it's showing the 7th as delivery day.
