Didn't need anything above my 32gig internal memory for my wiiu so doubt I'll need an SD for this, unless they start releasing some amazing virtual console shit.

Or something cool like DLC for Zelda.

I don't suppose there's some amazing deal on a high end Micro SD card anywhere people know about? I'm looking at a 128GB SanDisk card at the moment for £37.19, which seems pretty standard. Is there any reason why this is a bad choice?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-MicroSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B013UDL5HU/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics-accessories&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1487326932&sr=1-5&keywords=micro+sd

That's a class ten. I just ordered this one. U3 so it should be faster

*Edit* It even has a red racing stripe.

There will be digital only games though. I can't see myself using it too much for the likes of Zelda, but there will surely be some games I want to have around all the time, and others that simply won't have a physical release.

Yeah but they tend to be smaller.

I suspect we'll end up with 2 or 3 switches in the house and being able to easily share carts will be valuable.   Too many disadvantages to digital but the hefty price difference is the biggest.

The image shows a U3 card, but everything else on the page says it's a Class 10 UHS 1 card. I think I'll wait for you guys to get it first and see what comes.

That's a good point. I think I'll pay the extra and stick one of these in. I have one working as adoptive storage in my Shield tablet and it's noticably faster than the U1 I tried previously

I'm going to wait until someone does the tests for the cards before ordering. I can't imagine it will take long before someone tests different speeds of cards and the impact they have on saving/loading.

Surely people can wait a couple of weeks after launch before needing extra storage?

We're in that dangerous stage where we're all excited about a new machine and tempted to spend money on ropey games and accessories.   Be strong people.  You don't need a screen protector or a full price port of an ancient game.

Hark at old man misery guts here. You can't derail this train grinch.

I've already got it - came the other day. It has the little U3 logo on it. Looks exactly like the picture.

I certainly don't think I'll be needing an SD card for the first six months, by which time you'll get half the storage for twice the money.

Corrected for Brexit.

What's all the talk of SD Cards? There won't be enough to put on them in the first 6 months surely unless you buy absolutely everything. I can't wait to pick mine up from Game on the day but I am dreading the upselling I'll have to endure. Those guys are like fucking Tingle.

Whatever you do don't buy them off the marketplace. It's incredibly risking getting memory cards and often a lot of cheeky blighters buy cheap China knocks off with some official fake printed label often not doing what they are capable of. Always go for brand new to be safe.

Zelda is meant to take up half of the 32GB though, the system itself needs 2.5GB and that might jump up in future updates. Going to be stretched pretty thin as it is just relying on the system space.

Fair enough then. In that case write speed may end up being more important after all.

Even if it's not - why buy a slower one when it's more expensive as well? That Toshiba one is faster and cheaper. Can't see any reason not to go for that one?

There's a brilliant article where the people who make the Keyboardio:

looking_across_from_front_l_corner_grand

go to Shenzhen to oversee production. While they're there, they spend a couple of days haggling for budget electronic bits-and-bobs to put in a "box of crap" loot crate for their Twitter followers.

Anyway, one of the items they included in their crate was this '32GB' SD card:

Quote

It’s a MicroSD card. It is marked as being a 32GB card. If you stick it in your phone or computer, it will report that it is a 32 GB card. But it’s not. It’s an 8GB card with trick firmware. You should always be able to get at the last 8GB you wrote to the card, but….don’t try it with any important data or in any important device.

It was a lot easier to buy guaranteed fake cards than we expected. We had to go to one of the slightly seedier electronics malls. We had to go up to the second or third floor. We had to look for one of the vendors who didn’t have a prominent flash chip testing machine on their counter…and that was about it. There was some discussion of how much “real” storage we wanted in the cards. We asked about getting cards with only 2GB of real storage, but the vendor said 8GB was the lowest she could go. After the sale was finalized, the salesperson admitted that she would have charged us the same amount for the “256GB” cards

Interesting fact: The card can be modified to report any amount of storage as being available. The vendor said that she couldn’t do it at her booth and that she didn’t have a data sheet, but that if we wanted, she could send the cards back to the factory to be reprogrammed for us.

It cost them $2.

I don't think I'll ever need one.   Digital games are too expensive anyway.

But there will be digital only games with no physical release. Isn't Snipperclips digital only?

It is a Class 10 UHS-1 card, U3 doesn't have anything to do with that.

It is definitely a U3 card though as I bought it a few weeks back.

This is a very logical, totally reasonable and very helpful piece of advice.

Naturally, it has no place in a console thread full of hysteria this close to launch. Away with you, sensible man.

There will be no need to because of the micro SD slot. Extra storage would mean extra cost and people already had their melt down about the price.

With a case and some of those cartridge holders that also hold SD cards a couple of 64gb cards should cover most people.

We still don't know how well they will perform vs built in storage. Almost certainly slower.

We're talking about games here, games that most of the time you're loading from a physical hard drive on a PS4 or Xbone. An SD card will be perfectly good for loading games from, we're not talking about a difference in loading times in orders of magnitude, surely?
