I imagine they want a fucking lot, that's what stress testing is all about. Not going to learn much they don;t already know from a sustained but moderate load if they just let people play for a week or two. They want to basically check that everything is set for stuff like Spatfests - big numbers online, spikes at specific times etc.

gizmo1990
Just out of interest, did Capcom do those updated SF2 graphics themselves or farm them out? Because imo they look absolutely atrocious. To have the source material they have, with legendary character design and not do them justice, holy crap.

Sainsbury's also had a load of pre-orders apparently still available, no idea on launch stock but at least they are giving it a go I guess. Have a few free Splatfests so they can a) stress test the servers and b) promote the game to those that have never played it It worked brilliantly for Splatoon on the Wii U (great online experience, biggest new Nintendo IP in years) don't see how this isn't a great approach for Splatoon 2.... gizmo1990
I think it's just a another example of Nintendo mishandling the release of information. If they'd have just explained this demo better then we wouldn't have this issue. It's indicative really of how Nintendo struggle to get their point across sometimes, especially in the west. Of course, they could also have released say a singleplayer level too at the same time. Nothing special, just something to give people a taster of what to expect and with no ridiculous time restriction.
scottcr
dunno - I heard about it yesterday when a non-wiiU owning mate of mine who's getting a switch showed me a video of it being announced. He says they're testing it out and there'll be these free slots to join. He was quite looking forward to it. NINTENDOBAAAAAAD

I just think that this approach, in a world of whole weekend stress tests or 5 day beta's where you don't have to plan to be at your console for specific 1 hour periods, is extremely backwards. If I were to be extra cynical, I'd suggest that this approach might also be because they're worried about low player numbers, long wait times and empty lobbies.

Unless we're just moaning about free stuff not being enough... While they presumably want to restrict it to an hour to test how they handle a bulk of traffic, wouldn't it be better to have a few sessions open for at least a few hours (or God forbid, even a whole weekend) so more people have an opportunity to try it? It's not like anyone is going to think "I've had my fill of Splatoon, I won't need to play that again."
Shimmyhill
I think its more that Nintendo don't host dozens of online games so don't have lots of experience with demand requirements on servers etc - giving it a set time guarantees players will be there and able to properly stress test the infrastructure they have in place. Given as a rule Nintendo releases are on a different level to most others in terms of working out of the box its not the same as as marketing the game or getting feedback ala most other betas and is simply Nintendo stress testing their backend. If its really good and you get to play for an hour and then maybe you stay up for the next hour its pretty bloody good for building hype/interest in the game that could lead to sales - I play loads of betas on the PS4/Xbone and generally they end up putting me off a game, Titanfall 2 beta made me cancel a pre-order and Wildlands has put me off a game I was looking forward to as I loved GRAW so its sometimes a pretty dodgy gamble. I ended up getting TF2 after launch and due to the beta they changed a lot so it worked and backfired - its got to be a bit of a gamble letting the public loose for days on end!

I think you are being extra cynical, my son plays Splatoon most nights and he rarely has to wait more than a minute or so for the teams to fill. The original is still busy and I think the Switch will be more popular than the Wii U.

shynra
Such a classic image on the back of the box: The 1st person fighting bit looks a little like a SF4 background - wouldn't be surprised if its a mass sf4 asset reuse mode. - will grab it (and bombeman/puyp pop) once its cheaper
rubberducker
Really Nintendo should have packed in Spaltoon 2 free imo. It's only really a refresh of the wii u game and would have created a lot of positive buzz...

joe bazooka
Surely if they really wanted to get the game out there they should have offered people, I dunno, a few Amiibos to play it. Register online (which Nintendo will fuck up because they don't even know what the internet is) They send you 2 amiibos. They send you a code to download the game. If you don't like the game Nintendo could send you £10 as an apology. It's like they want to fail. I mean, charging for games. It's 2017!

How is Splatoon 2 any less worthy of being a paid for game than the likes of The Last Of Us Remastered or the PS4/XBone versions of GTA5, both of which are literally the original game at higher frame rates and resolutions and a few graphical touch-ups? Should they have been given away for free too? I never played Splatoon but if what Nintendo are saying is true and it has a new single player mode, new weapons, new maps and new gameplay mechanics then I struggle to see why it should be given away for free exactly. You'd have more of a case arguing for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to be free given it's the old game + DLC + a few new battle modes. But even then, given remasters are such a big thing nowadays you'd struggle to make a compelling case. I don't see people arguing that the Bioshock or Batman or [insert vaguely successful last-gen game here] remasters aren't worth the money with literally no new content.

Apart from the added content which others have mentioned, Splatoon 2 is adding in functionailty which the original never had in the form of an actual local multiplayer. One that allows even for a wired LAN without an internet connection, something which adds to replayability and is a rare occurence these days in games. Mind telling us what makes it seem like a refresh rather than a simple drive-by shitpost, rubberducker?
