But not every single game is going to be ported to Virtual Console.. so how is this a problem?

One of the basic things about Virtual Console is the games are running under emulation, essentially unmodified. That's what makes it Virtual Console and just a bunch of ports.

If every game has a different controller mapping, then either:

1) Players will have to memorise a crib sheet for each game which says which Wii button corresponds to which button on the actual Switch controller.

or

2) Developers will have to go in and patch the game to change the button prompts.

...at which point you might as well say "fuck it" and do an actual port with proper, rethought Switch controls.

Arent wii remotes bluetooth, they will just sync to the machine with a usb sensor - same plan for GC, there is a usb adaptor already to plug pads in?

Obv this rules out pure handheld play but in reality unless each game is re written for the current controls then there is already no hope for any play let alone handheld! Unless they pull a sony and do some shonky button mapping and declare the game compatible even if its unplayable on the Vita...

How does this disprove that the right joycon isn't a glorified wii remote when held upside down?

It shows that it's an inelegant solution in contrast to how Nintendo has handled VC in the past, and therefore unlikely.

I suppose that's the big counterargument really. If Nintendo had intended it to act as a Wii Remote, there's no reason they wouldn't have put it up on the top of the controller, and done umpteen other things to make it act as a more elegant Wii remote. It's not like any of the current applications would be hurt by having the sensor at the other end of the pad.

Except for the trigger buttons...... this was the elegant solution.  How is flipping a joycon upside down difficult?

Flip it sideways and it becomes a classic type mini controller, flip it upside down and it becomes a wii remote.

Seems like that's what they've planned.

If you hold it upside down you've got no buttons within reach unless you hold it in a really odd way.

Really?

I can't see myself holding that upside down and being able to press any of the face buttons comfortably.

That's a fair point.  Simple solution would be to attach it to an extender of some kind that resembles a wii remote.  The joycon is made to attach to things...

But it's about as comfortable as holding it sideways.. similar reach, with limited grip.  Yet there are gameplay methods where you can play with it sideways.  So it's still feasible that they intend for it to be held upside down to be used as an IR pointing wii remote type thing.

Or they could just sell Wii Remotes, which they already have all the supply chain and tooling for  and which probably cost 50p to make now.

There's nowhere to plug in the sensor bar.

It's not happening.  There is no IR pointer functionality.

Well I have to admire your spirit by putting a positive spin on the situation. One game a month is better than 4, or 6 because it will help you focus on that one title, for a short while until it's gone ;)

’Positive spin’? Fucking hell, Malcom Tucker would be proud of him managing to say that with a straight face.

The golden era of gaming for me was the SNES / N64 days when I was still in school.  I loved saving pocket money up and dinner money and looking through Super Play and even the ONM to see reviews and to find out what games were ranked high and wouldn't be a waste of my saved up cash.  It was even harder with the N64 as games were obviously more expensive, and I was in the launch cycle, rather than a couple of years later with the SNES where I could walk into Virgin Megastore and buy things like big box Super Metroid or Mario World for 15 quid - though I stupidly never bought 19.99 Secret of Mana, or 14.99 Secret of Evermore but that's another story ;)

I remember when I bought a a great game that I'd play it constantly for weeks, and then around 3 weeks to a month later, I'd be able to buy another one.

I never traded anything, so still have all of my SNES / N64 games from back then now, and built up a great collection of decent titles for both consoles.

I always wanted new games, more games, but I simply could not afford it.

I then moved on to University.  Like most students, I had an excess of money compared to my school days.  I had stopped buying games for a bit as, in around 1997 the internet entered my life, so I stopped gaming.  With my student money, and a part time job, I began to pick up older games I'd missed out on (including a Saturn / Dreamcast / essential PS games), then an import Gamecube.  The barrier was down, I could pre-order virtually any top GC game.  I ended up with a UK console too, for the convenience, so things I missed first time around from the US / JAP, I picked up when they had a UK release.

The pile of shame started to grow.

I then bought a ps2 and an xbox.  By this time there was a wealth of decent older titles at bargain prices.

The pile of shame was getting silly.

I drew a line under it when the 360 was released.  I dedicated myself to 1 home console and it worked well for a bit.  Eventually some PS exclusives meant I bought a PS3 too, then ps+ came along..

Basically, I have no self control.  I like a good deal, and I like a good game too!

So, as I age, I find I have less and less time for video games, and I'm optimistic enough to always have those rose tinted glasses on.  4 or 6 games isn't a good thing, especially when it's 4 or 6 mediocre games that I don't really want, or a combination of that perhaps I already have.  It's just a bigger pile of shame.  I seem to waste time trying ps+ games now rather than playing the ones I actually own.  I find it hard to commit to playing long games in case I stop for a few weeks and don't go back.

And so my point... It's a stupid situation, I honestly know so, but...

my brain tells me that something else enforcing LESS games might well be a good thing.

Let's wait and see.

PlayStation plus is shit for me.

It's incredibly rare that a game comes along that I really like that I haven't already got.  And I hate myself every month for downloading and having a go at games I know I won't like, but feel compelled to because they are "free". It feels like I'm paying Sony to waste an hour of my life every month.

This in spades.
