I still can't see how this will all work in harmony.

Not really fussed about not having to talk to anyone not on the friends list though, usually just annoying randoms.

I *think* what they are going for, is an app on your smartphone so that you're always 'connected' - so that invitations etc will always come through to you no matter where you are. You always have your phone on you right, so they want you to be able to receive notifications and messages etc all the time as well. Not just when you're at home, not jsut when you have Switch out and on. It's playing on the anytime/anywhere angle.

It's all very confusing right now - but I *think* that's what they are trying for - to push the comms and messaging etc through a device that you always have with you, and always have turned on.

Going to be interesting.....or car-crash.

News alert! News Alert!

Prepare the siren @deKay

if that is the case, I am in for paying, anything under £20 and I'll stump up the cash,1 game per month, for the month is not an issue, I'll have either finished it or got bored of it within that time anyway, and if I really want to continue playing it, then I've always got a Vita and Emulation to fall back on :P

Pricing wise, that seems OK (if the same kind of discounts pop up online as they do with PSN and Live it'll be cheap as chips). They now have until they actually intend to start charging, to convince us it's worth it.

Remember, it's all free until 'Fall' anyway - so plenty of time before we have to get all outraged at the cost/benefit/freestuff ratio ;)

Spoiler

I have no choice personally. I'd sell a kidney for more Splatoon online.

Did anyone ever think the limited on board space of the switch was anything other than Nintendo being typically cheap?

Dev units cost quite a bit more than standard retail switches though. Also there's nothing in the switch that "typically cheap". The screen is really good, the batteries about the best you can have, the joycons are pretty advanced stuff, Tegra isn't a cheap chip either. It's a quality piece of kit.

As for fast racing rmx it's interesting that they ditched the effect they had to use to get 720p on the WiiU (which was a weird form of temporal upscaling) and were able to push full 1080p with dynamic resolution when things get very intense. The WiiU version actually ran at about 540p without the upscaling. Certainly confirms that the machine is a lot more powerful in docked mode than the WiiU. Hints at the CPU being a lot better as well as the GPU. I mean FAST was one of, of not, the best techincal looking game on the WiiU. To out do that even in portable mode is pretty damn good.

Next I will provide a follow-up report about our software publisher partners. After the presentation on January 13, we have continued to receive requests from more and more software publishers who want to develop games for the system. At the presentation, we announced that there were over 80 titles in development from more than 50 software publishers, but that number has now climbed to over 100 titles from more than 70 publishers. Please look forward to more announcements about the software lineup in the future.

Can't believe I've only heard of this game today. It looks great!

I got to play it at EGX last year - the concept is easy to get behind but the movement and control is really satisfying. Definitely one to keep an eye on. :)

Now officially the best console: Fast RMX on Switch offers 1080p 60fps with 4-player splitscreen

Quote

"On Wii U it was tough to get to the visuals we wanted at 60fps. We had to use a lot of tricks to make it happen at all. For instance, on Wii U we were able to pull off two player split-screen racing at 720p and 60fps. Not bad at all, but with three or four players we had to scale down 30fps. Well, most racing games today don't even feature split-screen at all, so we didn't felt too bad about it. However, on the Switch we didn't had that limit. On Nintendo Switch in TV mode we now have four player split-screen, at 1080p and 60fps with much more details enabled. For worst case scenarios we enable dynamic resolution scaling to make sure the game keeps 60fps in unforeseen situations, tho that's usually not something you can spot."

I told you all ages that the reason for the HD rumble and the price of those controllers was because they are clearly a gateway for some kind of VR input. You all ignored me like I was a mad man :(

and here we are :)

I've always been on board with the VR concept.

What kind of discomfort is meant though? To the eyes, which is unavoidable, or because of the weight of the thing won't be suitable for strapping to your face?

How much does the Switch screen weigh? It looks a bit big to be strapped to my face for VR.

Less than a pound I believe. With just the tablet without joycons, apparently the weight is similar to an Xbox One controller.

But you bring up a good point about attaching it to your face.  I didn't even think of that.  It could just slide into a wide helmet attachment of some kind for VR.  The helmet could include excess hardware to boost the performance of Switch games to achieve 90fps without a big visual loss in quality, and could end up being a cheaper VR alternative for real gaming.

Well, that's essentially what Nintendo's patent for it shows. It's essentially the same concept as Google Cardboard. The idea of extra hardware in it is a good call, but I don't know how feasible that would be. Though to be honest, if they're seriously considering it I would hope they have all that planned out before the final design of the Switch.
