I was listening to the Glixel podcast earlier. John Davidson mentioned every industry person he spoke to in the past week thought this thing looked like a disaster.

 

I thought that was quite odd as the hardware looks great to me. He did also specify that some of the people he spoke to are involved in decisions regarding what to invest in, which is a bit worrying.

 

I guess they really need to start pushing their handheld franchises and get their handheld partners involved.

 

It also seems to confirm what people have been saying about Nintendo not even letting most publishers know what the switch was until the reveal late last year.

Hearing MK8 be 30fps with 3/4 players sucks. I guess the internals are evidently a beefed up Wii U*, and not by much.

 

How many years old is MK8 again?

The Zelda difference too, is something that should get more backlash as to why it can't handle 1080p on Switch. During the consumer transition to 4k displays no less.

 

It seems all the Switch is offering is a re-packaged pricier Wii U and expecting to get away with it ./grumpy at 2am post

 

*Yes, I know not literally. No longer PowerPC and all that. But that's still not enough of a excuse to spec so low.

Doesn't the Switch have a GPU chip that is 3 times as powerful as a Wii U, though?

 

Also, all of the hardware is within the handheld itself, not the dock.  So you couldn't have expected it to be on par with the PS4 or something.

 

Although apparently 2tflop mobile gpus are on the horizon, so there will be some mobile devices coming out within the next few years that could possibly outperform the Switch and the original PS4 when it comes to graphical power.

Nintendo haven't released a console that's been on par with Sony or Microsoft from a power perspective in years. Whilst I can appreciate and respect their decision to get out of the arms race, sometimes it does feel as though they're turning up to a gunfight with a wooden stick. They had to knock this one out of the park and, who knows? They still might! But it's not out yet and already people are questioning it's longevity, its capability and its mass market appeal. This, in the day and age when Sony and Microsoft are pushing for more and more power, VR is on the verge of becoming a mass market thing and people are looking at making the move to 4K televisions, the switch and Nintendo already look a bit old hat. There is daring to be different and then there is just being ignorant of what's going on around you and I'm not sure where Nintendo fit now. 

 

They should have marketed this as a handheld that is also a console, not the other way round. I think it will certainly be an interesting couple of years for them.

Not  available on Prime, meaning Amazon might not be fulfilling the order. If that is the case it is one of their re-sellers

That's just mental if true. No wonder the first year is so bare bones, and why would third parties even try to publish games for the system if this is true?

The power thing is okay as long as they price it. The problem is that they then add some exotic tech to the machine or controllers which pushes the price up for dubious value.

 

Sometimes this pays off,Ike the Wii. But mostly it doesnt. I'd be all over the Switch for £199. At £250 I probably stretch to it. At £280 I'll wait since Zelda is available on Wii U. Alternatively they could have probably stripped the Switch right down to a TV box like device with PS3.5 power for stupidly cheap and sold a ton.

 

It's not the power, it's that they can't get the value proposition right.

Been thinking about the headphone situation on the Switch and how there's apparently not headphone jack on the Pro Controller. 

 

Considering that the Sony Wireless Headphones work on PC when the USB Dongle thing is plugged in do we think there's any chance at all they might work on the Switch if the Dongle is plugged into one of the USB sockets on the Dock? 

 

I'm guessing I'm being too optimistic who knows?

I think it's doubtful that the USB port on the dock will support wireless headphone dongles and it'll end up being unused.  I noticed in the UK Zelda advert that was posted a while back that the guy was using wired headphones with it while out and about.  I'm just really hoping that the device supports bluetooth headphones.

I can't be the only one to think that that tv ad is dreadful? Totally lacking in any excitement and pizazz. Fine, there's fuck all launch titles so double down on Zelda but at least make it look awesome. And the less said about the music with its creepy subliminal 'swiiiiiiitch' the better!

John Davidson has a problem with Nintendo. He has never taking them seriously. I did not even bother with downloading glixer podcast. I knew how it was going to be like.

Also he seems to be really charismatic and is the sort of guy that lead conversations wherever he goes. I was shocked when he went to ign nintendo podcast a few weeks ago and turned most of the host there into nintendo skeptics.

 

I dont know what disaster he is talking about. Lack of third parties? I think Nintendo has been considering that problem and is well aware of that.

I just changed the card to use on my Amazon pre-order and the delivery date has changed from 3rd of march to "Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We'll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date."

Erm, I don't think they, erm, mocked up a, erm, plane so that people would, erm, experience what it's like, erm, to play a mobile device on a, erm, plane.

Well the amazon chat person tells me changing the payment card on my order has put me at the back of the pre-order queue with no known delivery date.

The Switch could easily run a 720p port of the Special Edition at 60fps with a couple of the effects turned down/off, just like my laptop from 2011 does. 

 

Why won't it? Because Bethesda can't be arsed editing the .INI file. It's nothing to do with what's under the hood of the Switch.
