As utterly crap as the launch is, I think the Switch has a very strong first year.

Indeed, which is why I don't mind waiting a little until I can afford one. Christmas with Zelda, Mario Kart and Mario Odyssey is bloody amazing. That's a killer Christmas line up right there and no doubt when we'll start seeing more attractive bundles, once the early adopters have all been fleeced ;)

I need to be fleeced, unfortunately. Our first baby will end up spawning around September, so if I don't get one now I likely never will. :( I might not even want one with all that crazy chemical shit that triggers within the parents after a birth. Smashing out something like €600 for a new games machine and games during November could be a hard sell.

A six year old 360 port, a yearly sports title and two Wii U ports is hardly an incredible selection that might overpower their new game, it's the bare minimum I'd expect from a console launch. Are you genuinely suggesting that the launch is better for not having the meagre selection of titles from that video and instead spreading them out over six months?

No I mean like a week or two later. Someone might finish Zelda in a couple weeks and think about buying another and that's were these games come in. There are loads of games I never play because they are released at the same time as something else.

Mind,  none of these titles on the switch interest me ( skyrim and the sport stuff).

A new baby is knackering, but on the other hand you'll be up all night anyway so you might as well get some gaming in. A word of advice though, play games you can play in short stints. I tried playing GTA V and it was just sat on the pause screen for about 3 months.

I'll pick one up nearer xmas with Zelda, Mario and Mario Kart and when the OS and online is finally revealed. Nuts to buy into this thing with it being so lacking in info and software. Probably get a game pack in by then too.

Yep, they really need to start talking pricing, for both online play and e-shop prices. They also need to discuss account systems, virtual console game transfers etc etc. I expected them to come out more confidently this time about all that, but it's an absolute shit show. I think it will really dent the success of Mario Kart and Splatoon if they don't sort it. And that voice chat bollocks - fucking hell.

So.. having a set up for 8-player mode (3 extra Joycon pairs + the game) would cost you about £260 (on top of the cost of the console..)

Wanting to play 8-player anything on any console is going to cost you similar.

Asphalt 3D - 43%

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars - 67%

Nintendogs + Cats - 71%

Pilotwings Resort - 71%

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D - 73%

Rayman 3D - 61%

Ridge Racer 3D - 75%

Samurai Warriors: Chronicles - 61%

Super Monkey Ball 3D - 55%

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition - 85%

The Sims 3 - 52%

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - 77%

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D - 53%

Out of that list I'd say Nintendogs, Pilotwings, Ridge (especially, amazing game!) Super Streetfighter and Shadow Wars (a brilliant game too) were all worthy worthy launch titles. So imo the original point does stand. The Switch's launch line up is incredibly poor. Singling out Namco's and Capcom's support there too. Head and shoulders above what we're getting this time around. Just a total lack of faith in the machine.

(Going by others logic) Port, Port, Port, Port, ok. I'd argue Zelda trumps all though.

Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Zelda are the only things besides Smash and Mario that anyone gave a toss about on the WiiU. Smashing three out of five of those for day one would be a bit of an orgasm. How do they follow that?

With new games? I can kind of swallow them padding the launch lineup with Wii U ports. Padding the first six months with them seems like taking the piss.

It's a weak launch but as a first year line up I think it's decent if you're really into Nintendo's first party stuff, Dragon Quest and JRPGs in general and Dynasty Warriors / Musou stuff. Very Japan-centric but loads to chew on. Western third party support is disappointing

There's no way in hell either of those announced Dragon Quest games will be available on the Switch in the first year in anything other than Japanese, and even then it's a long shot.

Mario Kart is a racing game I've already paid for a month after release, when it should be a day one filler as it's not a new game, it's a tiny shitty DLC and a crossplay voucher for £50, and I imagine a lot of people would appreciate it being released on the same day and then maybe not being quite so overpriced by the time they've finished Zelda. Splatoon isn't out for five months, so it's not doing that job at all.

I'm pretty sure you could buy the controllers, platform and software to play 8 player bomberman a shitload cheaper than the Switch version by buying the controllers, software and platform to play literally any of the other identical 8 player versions of bomberman.

Hmm, they were at best passable, really. Ridge Racer and Street Fighter IV were reasonably impressive down-conversions of PS4 games, but not exactly original. The 3DS got some decent games during year one (Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7), but certainly not in its launch window.
