Nintendo Switch

The Switch is deffo a home console that you can take out for short periods.

I reckon there will be a handheld ready from Nintendo that will use the same cpu/gpu architecture but likely less powerful with a better battery.

This way Nintendo still use the same teams to build one version of the software but it now has 3 "modes".  Switch Docked, Switch Undocked and New Handheld.

They can see how the Switch does and if it's not setting the world alight, release the proper handheld to keep the customer base as high as it is for 3DS.

Are you trying to turn them into Sega?

So, this thing won't be getting a Netflix app (or even a YouTube app for that matter) as Nintendo wants this to be a "dedicated gaming machine".

Yeah, no, that's retarded. First Switch news that truly grinds my gears. How the hell do you come out with what's essentially a high-tech TABLET and then DON'T add Netflix to the thing!? This is post-SNES-era levels of Nintendo ignorance and arrogance. They better add that shit ASAP, like they did with the Wii U. Especially now that Netflix has a proper offline mode.

Yeah, Nintendo are really ignorant.  Stupid, ignorant Nintendo.

Anyone know where you can still pre-order this? Amazon,  shopto and Gamestop have stopped taking orders?

Argos still have them last time I looked.

They've charged me for my console already, but I did get a nice message on my phone telling me to sit tight and I'll be getting my console on launch day.

I'm sitting tight,

Stuff about netflix

As a non-regular on rllmuk, I can't tell if this is an in joke or not...

Is Netflix on a console important enough to be a deal breaker?

I see it as a slightly more important feature than backwards compatibility - something that folk talk about as indispensable, then never use.

In the same way that I don't buy a new console to play the games I played on my old console, I prefer the easy, convenience, and throwaway price of something like an Amazon firestick for streaming stuff.  I run a Plex media server at home for my music.  I stream to my work laptop, and my mobile, and cast to my chromecasts around the house. I installed the app on my ps4 as I was doing something else i my games room (wrapping Christmas gifts for my wife) but felt it was a bit overkill to have an expensive console turned on just to stream music.  I guess the reliability of the Xbox 360 perhaps made me like this.  I didn't even use it for DVDs incase it decided to RROD.. ;)

We can all assume if you've got to get your phone out to invite a friend to play Mario Kart with you, then there's not a hope in hell of a web browser.

They've basically said there's no point in getting the Switch to replicate functionality you already have in your smart device, which is why we've got this crappy sounding Online implementation coming.

We're lucky there's even a Mario game coming out for it, as after all iPhones can play Mario games now, so what do you need the Switch for? ;)

Here you go, guys.  You don't need Netflix on your Switch.  Just run a Plex media server at home.

From: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2017/01/18/how-expensive-is-the-nintendo-switch-really-japanese-twitter-compares-it-to-35-other-consoles/

"Is the price too high or does it make sense? Let’s find out… using history!

Information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch console has been exploding recently, and we’ve finally gotten an official release date and price: March 3, 2017, priced at 29,980 yen in Japan (and $299.99 in the U.S.). The price has gotten a lot of people talking, with many voicing concerns that it’s too expensive, especially considering the Nintendo Switch doesn’t come bundled with any games to play, like the Wii did with Wii Sports.

https://mobile.twitter.com/poevil/status/820940815455268864/photo/1

There were also a couple of changes made in the comments, such as the original Game Boy actually being 12,500 yen, and the Xbox 360 actually being 39,795 yen. @poevil also got many responses concerning how some consoles came with memory cards or games, thus making price comparison more difficult. But taking all those variables into account would make a comparison nearly impossible, so he went with whatever came on release day to make it as fair and concise as possible.

All that being said, the chart still makes for some interesting comparisons. Here’re just a few observations:

● First, a Switch is $299.99 in the U.S., but only 29,980 yen ($265) in Japan, so buying a Switch in Japan saves you about US$35. Cha-ching!
● The Switch is cheaper than both the PlayStation 1 and 2 were. Suddenly it sounds like we’re getting a good deal.
● When it comes to more recent consoles, the Switch is cheaper than the PlayStation 3 and 4 by a significant margin, as well as the Xbox 360 and One.
● However, the NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U all debuted at 25,000 yen, making the Switch the most expensive Nintendo console.
● The 3DO was priced at 54,800 yen?! No wonder nobody ever had one back then.

Does that all mean that the Switch is expensive? Or does that mean it’s cheap? @poevil still didn’t really have an answer even after making the chart, and here’s what Japanese netizens thought:

“Once you buy all the things you need isn’t about the same price as a PS4?”
“Everything’s just getting more and more expensive.”
“When you look at it this way, it looks kind of cheap.”
“Look at the glorious NES at 14,800 yen. We are not worthy!”

In the end whether or not you find the Nintendo Switch expensive or cheap depends on your point of view. For someone who buys all the new consoles when they come out, it might not be so bad. But for the growing body of gamers who wonder why you would pay more than a dollar for games you can’t even play on your phone, it might seem crazy expensive."

I'm actually giving serious thought to this 'buy two consoles' idea. It would mean I could have one at mine and one at work and would solve the issue of needing more controllers. Do we know if games save on the cartridge and not the console itself?

Is this the first game confirmed to use the touch screen? And the IR camera (other than 1-2-Switch)?

- new officer creation feature using the Joy-Con controllers’ motion IR camera
- when pointing the IR camera towards a target, various officers will be born based on things such as the target’s form and feel
- uses touch-based controls
- utilize the large screen to zoom in, zoom out, and swipe, move your units during battle, and activate officer strategies

so just found out this is region free. Anyone else importing Zelda for the sensible cover art?

I'm still torn about getting one but a friend of mine will be in Japan around release time so if I cave then I'll get him to pick one up for me on the cheap :D

Do we reckon there's any chance of Wii U games being available for download? There's no reason why the off-tv-play-enabled games shouldn't work on Switch, right?

I seriously doubt that, given that the Switch isn't based on the same PowerPC architecture as the Wii U, and the limited storage capacity of the Switch unit. Much as I'd like the Switch to be backwards compatible with previous Nintendo hardware, I gave up on any hope of that very early on. :(

Anyway, has anyone seen any images comparing the size of the Switch handheld mobile to a PS Vita?
