Is it possible to use the the dock horizontally? Will the dock be available separately?

Disappointing if not entirely surprising to see no ethernet port again. Will there be an official adapter available for this?

I'm a bit worried on what looks like a lack of third party support as while Nintendo still make great games without third party support it'll struggle to catch on and we'll have a wii u repeat.

This coupled with what looks (at least to your average customer) a relatively complicated system, weak launch line up and a high launch price I fear they may struggle with this.

I suppose they are launching in March as they missed the December launch window but for me would have been better to wait until say September and include the newer nvidia architecture as I suspect this will be used as an excuse for not porting to the switch in the near future.

I'm really sceptical about the paid online service purely on the current account system where you need to buy or rebuy everything between new consoles and there is no cross buy.  Still let's see what they announce here. Lack of voice chat isn't an issue as I think for kids this is better to be honest.

I got my info from last week's Observer. I'm talking about network revenue vs. PPV revenue. TV rights and the like are a different thing.

Right but if the company is making record profits in general, then their business model is working. I've been a long time subscriber to the Observer too. I'm sure either Meltzer or Alvarez tweeted a graphic showing the upswing recently. The Network cost a lot to set up but it was an investment in the future.

Every long haul flight I've had in the past five years has had a power socket in the seat. Several have had USB connections.

A lot of short haul do too.

Yup, the only long haul flight I've been on in the last decade which didn't was in an ancient a340.

All airlines with 777, 787, 330, and 380s and most 747s which service most long haul routes, will have power supplies.

It's definitely not an issue.

Any flight I've been on where USB is available (and yeah, does seem to be the norm for long haul these days), the output seems to be 1A or so, because I can't charge my phone's battery any faster than I can drain it.

there are some amazing battery banks out there, just grabbed one that fully charges my macbook pro, or will charge an iphone 10 times. Sadly though they arent allowed on planes. But im sure it would be perfect for the switch

Aww really? Bummer. I was aware that there were capacity limits, but I didn't think they were that strict. Googling a bit, it does look like the higher capacity batteries are brushing up against most airline's rules. Maybe once everyone has one because every doodad they own charges off USB-C and no-one has invented better battery technology yet, this will change.

Well, that would be disappointing. Maybe that's talking about getting it to 100% charge? I was hoping getting it to about 80% charge from dead would take no longer than an hour. We don't know the actual capacity of the battery yet, or the output of the dock, so this is all kind of guesswork for now.

There's no way 1-2-Switch won't be back-peddled into a download code pack-in as long as everyone kicks up enough of a stink. They're just fucking trying it, and I bet they have 'after thought' stickers for the retail console boxes already lined up.

Stick it to the cunts.

I wouldn't be holding my breath! The price they are asking for it though, goodness me the nerve. Nintendo really are hugely arrogant/tight/stupid/blissfully unaware(!?), take your pick sometimes. As I said, it's extremely poor imo. Speaking as a dev, I suspect the tracking is no where near as accurate as this HD nonsense is meant to make you believe. It looked to be based more on initial detection and after that simple timings. Ie, not actually 'tracking' entire movements 1:1.

My experience of it being demoed yesterday was one of bemused looks from people. I can totally appreciate that some people there might have really enjoyed it, but I didn't get that impression from my view. It should probably be pointed out too that I'd presume 100% of the attendees were Nintendo fanboys/girls.

I'm amazed that so many of your kids want one, I mean, when my parents showed me an expensive video game console and asked if I wanted one, i'd have never said no

My kids often greet trailers for games, consoles and movies with a round of "BORING" and tell me they don't want them. They seemed pretty indifferent on the Switch, but they've never really gotten into Zelda like I wanted them to.

They are allowed on planes but they must be taken in hand baggage and some airlines have restrictions on size (I think over 30,000mAh is not allowed).

I've flown with my 12,000mAh one multiple times. It has both a 2.1A and 1A port. That should charge the switch 2-3 times.

Obviously make sure you buy a decent brand and not a timebomb from China.

In regard to this image of the dock, i'd love a third party to make a small square block for the TV  picture bit, to replace the whole thing if at all possible. Would make the Switch super portable for taking on holiday / hotel rooms etc..   a bit like those HDMI selectors.

Unless theres any other tech in the dock above?

I'm pretty sure I heard or read somewhere that the Switch battery takes 3 hours to charge.

Yeah it's 3 hours for a full charge i.e 1 percent to 100. However lithium ion batteries charge quickly to 80 percent and then slowly to the rest of the 20 percent. This is a very standard recharge time for tablets. Of course it would have been good to have fast charge but that would probably kill the battery life far too quickly.

As for the playtime of the battery, well that's just battery technology. They have pretty much used the best battery they can for the size of the machine.

The battery capacity is 4310 so it's good considering the size it needs to fit into (bare in mind that there is a cooling fan inside the machine so that takes extra space).

More to the point, if the kid gets into bother using the smartphone and app the console isn't getting blamed.

This is what I've been thinking. Nintendo can totally wash their hands of any potential controversy should something happen.

Nah, the battery isn't really the limiting factor in these things. The cell's ability to accept current goes up as its size does, so for a given chemistry it'll take about the same amount of time to charge the battery regardless of how large it is.

(Particularly given that they're usually literally batteries - collections of multiple cells. It's no more harmful to charge a battery of 3 cells with 15 watts total than 1 cell with 5 watts.)

The trouble is getting a lot of watts out of the mains, across a wire and into a big cell. A 3-hour charge time isn't bad as far as these devices go.

I did the same thing but realised there are no 4 player games (apart from bomberman) out at launch.

There's Arms (2 player) but that doesn't have a release date.

I don't think Mario kart supports 4 player local?

edit: it does but only in TV mode.

By the time Arms and Mario Kart are out I'll have four controllers ready, and in the meantime can use them with the included clamp for single player games. Makes sense to get them now if I'm going to get them anyway!

I got into the preview today thanks to Darhkwing. The system is real cute and Zelda is Zelda. Super colourful screen and lots of people have mentioned and it's pretty small.

1 2 Switch though.....I can't believe they're charging money for that. It's total garbage.

Awesome. Was Mario Playable?

been thinking about the fact there is only 5 launch games and i think i actually prefer this means i will be playing zelda a lot. When the ps4 launched i had 10 games and i only played about half of them with the switch i will play zelda, hopefully Nintendo release one big game a month and the rest are third party and indie games.

I guess. Wonder how long before the inevitable price cut. I have ordered the same btw :hat:
