Not true. They are making more money now per year than before. The transitional period from PPV to Network and the cost of setting it up meant they had a few years of lower profits, but it's all good now that the subscriber base has built up.

It is true. The revenue from network subscriptions isn't making up the shortfall in PPV revenue. It's pretty much consensus that they fucked up by putting WrestleMania on the network.

That isn't true sorry. They are making more now thanks to the Network, TV rights and other areas than before with the old model. They had their most successful year last year. Your consensus is a few years old. I'll try find the article I read last week which detailed this later but I'm off out now. Here is some stats though:

Quote

Second Quarter 2016 Highlights

Revenue increased 32% (13% excluding the timing impact of WrestleMania1) to a record $199.0 million as WWE’s Live Event and Network segments achieved their highest quarterly revenue in Company history

WWE Network reached a record of 1.52 million average paid subscribers over the second quarter 2016, which represented a 25% increase from the second quarter 2015

I can't see it being anything to do with the specs. Even the original fucking Xbox had voice chat!

The only reason I can think of at the moment is what I personally consider the obvious one: Nintendo still doesn't "get" it when it comes to online gaming. Or, indeed, the Internet in general.

It could just be a continuance of their view that online voice chat means lots of racist/homophobic insults being hurled around and not wanting to subject their customers to that too easily and "spoiling their Nintendo experience". I think they GET online. They just don't want what comes with most of it. Rocket League without voice comms is great. So was MarioKart. I've got no reservations with letting my kids play those and run into arse holes online.

I got my info from last week's Observer. I'm talking about network revenue vs. PPV revenue. TV rights and the like are a different thing.

Really clutching here but maybe they don't expect young kids to have phones so they won't be able to use voice chat, so they aren't subjected to the dross online.

Like I say, clutching.

More to the point, if the kid gets into bother using the smartphone and app the console isn't getting blamed.

So I've ordered a pair of Joy-Cons from the Nintendo Store for £69.99 (in the snazzy red and blue colours).

I've realised I can leave these in the charging grip that comes with the console, and leave the grey ones connected to the screen when it's docked (so I never have to mess around disconnecting them), but it'll let me play four player games whenever I fancy. Smarter than buying a £60 Pro Controller I reckon.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise. If they last 20 hours though, I'm happy to just switch them around with the ones docked with the console when they run out, and just keep doing that.

I can't stress enough that the Pro Controller's the only Switch controller with a d-pad, though. If you have any desire to get Ultra Street Fighter II, you pretty much NEED one.

That's a good point. As much as I love a good d-pad, I won't be buying any fighting games.

The Zelda trailer looked great but watch the gameplay in this video at the 5h17m mark. Take away the Link model and Zelda preconceptions and just imagine you're traversing this environment in first person. Theses are some shitty, No Man's Sky level environment graphics with barrel physics lauded like it's 2001. I'm sure the design and dungeons will be great, but the overworld looks incredibly empty and dated to me.

I watched the part you mentioned. It looks empty compared to what, exactly? In every direction there was something in the middle distance worth investigating.

Laura Dale was saying that people at the show told her the empty-ish world was a demo thing, whatever that means. I didnt think it was that empty to be honest, there was wildlife and enemies all over the place. You can pick out sections of any open world where there's nothing to look at.

As for the style, I really like it. The watercoloury look of Skyward Sword was one of the few things I liked about that game, and this has taken it to the next level. It's like a big moving painting. I think it looks lovely.

Despite this not being the product I was hoping it would be, I've decided to keep my pre-order of the system, Zelda, Bomberman and Pro controller.

My son would not be pleased if I kept him waiting for MK8 again.

Adopt me please.

The battery life is bad, that's not getting enough play here.

Nintendo themselves advertised it as something you might take on a plane. Well, you'll only be playing it for 3 hours with the fancy games, so its not going to last a long flight.

I mean how much was a Vita at launch? Compare how much more powerful this is, not to mention it has a full compliment of proper controls, bigger screen and all the extras.

Pretty amazing that a new handheld is more powerful than a five year old one, sure.

Just put my preorders in for Zelda, Arms, 1-2 Switch and Mario Kart. Good Lord the games are expensive.

Arms is £50 before the Amazon prime discount. Better be good.

Will need to get extra joy con controllers too so when my imaginary friends come round we can play together.

Every long haul flight I've had in the past five years has had a power socket in the seat. Several have had USB connections.

A lot of short haul do too.

I did the same thing but realised there are no 4 player games (apart from bomberman) out at launch.

There's Arms (2 player) but that doesn't have a release date.

I don't think Mario kart supports 4 player local?

edit: it does but only in TV mode.

I got into the preview today thanks to Darhkwing. The system is real cute and Zelda is Zelda. Super colourful screen and lots of people have mentioned and it's pretty small.

1 2 Switch though.....I can't believe they're charging money for that. It's total garbage.

The joycons look like pretty amazing pieces of kit. And it's great the system has two controllers out of the box, even if they are a bit small.

But they must be pushing up the price in a shocking fashion if they are retailing at 70 quid. I'd rather have more basic controller and take £30-50 off the price of the machine. And I like motion controls.

I've personally found the fact that most phones also have maybe 3-6 hours of screen on time a lot less annoying since I got one with USB-C and fast charging. You will be able to plug this in from dead for about 20 minutes, and the battery will most likely be more than half full. You'll be able to buy generic battery banks for about £30 that can charge it five times over, also using fast charging. It's not as big a deal as it could have been, and I think Nintendo have made an acceptable compromise its dual life as a console and handheld.

I kind of wish the strap things came with the console. Maybe they do? Hard to tell. I really liked the freedom the Wii + Nunchuck afforded you, don't need to have your shoulders close together like with most controllers. Plus I'm kind of hoping Breath of the Wild has motion controls for sword swingage + shield bumpage, although I might be in a minority there. Would be nice to have the choice.

there are some amazing battery banks out there, just grabbed one that fully charges my macbook pro, or will charge an iphone 10 times. Sadly though they arent allowed on planes. But im sure it would be perfect for the switch
