I'd be really happy if it did, and then could sell my PS4, all it's been used for since I bought it has been to gather dust, it's waiting for P5.

My PS4 is being used lots and lots as it's my primary console (and my gaming PC can't keep up anymore), but I loved Persona 4 Golden so much on the Vita ... It's just perfect on a portable. Persona on Switch would be instant purchase.

Through HDMI, or you're fucked.

Optical Out is disappearing rapidly unfortunately. My old 5.1 amp doesn't support HDMI so that will need an upgrade in the not too distant future too.

Hm That's a bummer.

Isn't there an adaptor available for this?

20 seconds? I saved a 10 minute clip yesterday - it took no perceptible amount of time.

You need a new PS4!

Maybe my 10 sec clips are full of so much ACTION it kills the system ;)

It used to be fairly quick but now its an utter slog, the machine doesnt ever crash so I'm happy its not faulty!

How do you not have a HDMI amp?

You can get devices that take HDMI and strip the 5.1 audio into optical like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tendak-Optical-Extractor-Converter-Splitter/dp/B00Y0920B4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484410866&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+in+optical+out

I have the Logitech Z-5500 which are beasting but don't have a HDMI input sadly.

That should do nicely though! (I hope)

I mostly use my One S, the PS4 was genuinely bought just for P5, I plugged it in when I bought it from the trading folder to make sure it worked fine, and it's sat dormant since, I downloaded a few free to play bit's, but generally prefer the Xbox pad and exclusives.

I find this reasoning really odd - what's "dead" about your Wii U? All the games you bought, all the VC games you bought, they are still there - Nintendo are not sneaking into your house in the night and taking them away. You've still got what you paid for.

I generally fund my Nintendo console purchases by selling the last one, which has been easy for years with their pretty decent BC. Given that this is playing host to identical ports of Wii U games I don't think it's a stretch to think it could handle BC, but they've chosen not to go that way. Now, instead of my Wii U covering over half the cost, my Wii U is staying forever to play Wii U, Wii and VC games. It just discourages me from investing.

Edit: The other point with it being dead is that nothing I've seen of this gives me any faith that I'll get to play any of the software on this in a few years when it's bombed and they're having their third crack at this idea. I've paid Nintendo for the same things enough times, and they said that the NNID marked the point where they created an account system that showed some respect for their customers and their purchases. That's not what I'm seeing, and as someone who has spent hundreds of pounds on digital Nintendo games, I just have to end it somewhere. I'm not paying them for the same things again because they're too stupid to make any new games and want to fill out their lineup with the same old shit.

Did you buy a PS4? I hear they are great for BC ;)

More details to come on transferring previous content etc from VC:

EG: The big thing that everything is concerned about is the Xbox One's attitude to second-hand gaming. I really want to try to get to the bottom of this issue before we talk about anything else.

Harrison: Okay, so, I can understand where some of the confusion may have come from, so let me try to help out there.

[...]

What I think people are now confusing is the purchasing of content in the first instance with the ability to trade and resell the previously played games. We have a solution for that and we will be announcing exactly how that works in due course.

EG: Why can't you talk about it today?

Harrison: Today is about introducing the platform and it's about introducing the big themes of what Xbox One is about as a new entertainment device that brings together games, TV and entertainment into one place. I think it's inappropriate for us to go into every avenue of tiny little detail today, but we will in due course, so...

I bought a PS4 over a year after release when the price was more reasonable. As they've been too much of a shower of cunts to support BC I funded that by trading my iPad and kept my stupid PS3. At least that account allowed me to bring across some purchases though, and if I sell my PS3 and buy another one in a few years I can still download all my games. My fucking Vita remembers all the PSP games I bought digitally seven years ago. And as Sony are finally switching to a normal architecture I can see how BC is hard but this will help it in future. I'll give them a shot at that. If my PS5 doesn't pay my digital PS4 purchases I won't be paying them for digital games either.

Thinking of punting a whole bunch of GameCube and Wii games... Metroid trilogy, Xenoblade, fzero, chibi robo, last story, 1000 year door etc... methinks I should be able to raise enough....

Is the GameCube VC definitely a thing?

Everyone complained about 3DS battery when it came out.

Yeah, because it was and still is awful. Which bodes poorly for the Switch's even shorter lifespan.

Nintendo’s online service for Switch will charge a monthly fee and one of the incentives is one free classic game “per month.” Does that mean you lose access to that game after a month?

Reggie Fils-Aime: Correct. It means that essentially you’ve got access to that game for a period of time, and then after the month there’s a new selection. You’ll have the opportunity to buy it, but [after] that month we’ve moved on to another game.

I think it would be helpful maybe to step back. Because I think it’s important there’s an understanding of the bigger vision. The bigger vision is that we are going to provide an overall online service, subscription-based, that not only will capture the multiplayer opportunity, but also the voice chat capability that we’re going to provide through a global app. We think that that’s just as important as access to Virtual Console content.

The reason for that is, it continues to reinforce our commitment to online, and do so in a way that will enable the consumer to enjoy their Nintendo Switch and to still be able to play those connected experiences—like Splatoon, like Kart, like fill in the blank—while they’re on the go. Instead of having some sort of bulky gamer headset, you’ll be able to do it right off your smartphone, put in your earbuds that you use for your standard mobile device. We think that’s a pretty sweet solution. That’s part of the overall opportunity that we see in a subscription service.

Games journalism, people.

No one is asking him why there are only 5 games on launch, let alone if he sees the madness is asking people to pay Nintendo a subscription fee so they can talk to people using their phones.

BC would be pretty hard on two fronts - one it's a different architecture, two they have no DVD drive. It's not like it's something easy that they just decided against - they physically have no drive in order to play older titles.

Nintendo have arguably the best track record in terms of providing BC in recent generations, it's just physically not possible for them this time out.

You're arguing the same point - Nintendo have taken nothing away from you. Everything you have ever bought you could still play if you hadn't sold the hardware. If you don't want to pay for a VC title again, don't pay for it. If you do pay for it, you'll be able to play it on Switch for as long as you want.

Are you equally upset you bought stuff on PS2/PS3 that you can't play on PS4?

Yeah but at least Batman compared favourably with the 360 version. It's not certain yet which version of Skyrim we're getting yet mind.

"It's Arkham City, and by default a good game, but the basic reality is that we'd take any of the older - and now cheaper - versions of this excellent title ahead of the underwhelming Wii U port."

In the golden days, you used to be able to play your console online without worrying about caning your smartphone battery at the same time.

How different is it archtecturally? So different that half the games coming in the first year are Wii U ports? How different is their SNES emulator realistically going to be?

All the the games I bought on PS3 digitally that are available on PS4 I got for free. I'm not expecting every game ever to work forever, I'm expecting their paid emulator service that they've made no changes to to play the same roms that I've already paid £10 for.
