Nintendo's awful, inept online services are kind of charming when they're free, if I was paying they'd make me want to strangle someone. The free game rentals are a joke, especially when I'm assuming many of them will be games I bought for the VC and "upgraded" to the Wii U. But what else will be locked behind the subscription? If it's their useless versions of internet browsing and streaming services it won't make much difference, but Nintendo are absolutely stupid enough to put essential console features in there. My main concerns right now are finding out the cost of that subscription and what the overall experience will be like without it. For the first time ever though, I'm feeling pretty pessimistic about new Nintendo hardware If the subscription's similar to the Playstation I won't mind. £39 a year for a ton of free games, discounts and online gaming is good value to me. There's usually at least one game a year I'd pay that for on its own. If it's a tenner a month for nothing more than online access they can swivel. You don't miss out, in fact the opposite, you save money by hanging on. Early adopters have been getting rinsed for a while now, and this is my official exit from that. I might get one for Mariokart, which is almost 2 months after launch. I'm not queuing up to GAME or placing Amazon orders for 400 quid and up for a console + game + pad any more, literally lining up to over pay for goods, never mind this pay per play online thing. Console looks good, will be great to get back into Mariokart, but I'm going to learn the lessons of 2016 and not just throw all my money at them on day one. The Wii U is still full price (or €280 - €300) in most places over here. Not going to count on Switch reductions any time soon.
scottcr
The joycons look great. I loved being able to keep both sides of the controller apart with the Wii.
scottcr
2 player experiences are key to the success of this machine. People being able to take it to their friends houses, hand over a controller and play without a telly. Mario Kart is perfect for that - it just seems a bit disappointing for us that have already have MK8 and have completely rinsed it. Bomberman as well. They need to get lots of smallish two-players out on eshop. Snipperclips looks like the right idea.

But if they follow previous form and just charge around £1-2 I think that's OK personally. That was was ok for the Wii U because it was better than the usual Nintendo shit. The NNID was supposed to be their attempt to compete with the proper online shops where buying things actually means something. If they think they can charge me to play games registered on my account from different devices they clearly still have no idea what's made the proper account systems worthwhile. If they're idiotically staggering releases like the same games again, artificially spread out, is a solution to their pathetic lineup, then you'd be an absolute fool to go in and pay for the same games again. In two years time another machine will be dead and they'll be charging you another £2 to "upgrade" a thirty year old game we've all already paid them for. Fuck that. 16 minutes ago, womblingfree said: If the subscription's similar to the Playstation I won't mind. £39 a year for a ton of free games, discounts and online gaming is good value to me. gizmo1990
Well I've had a shufty at the hands on event. Firstly, it's probably worth pointing out that there were no entry checks. So if you'd have just turned up and joined the rabble you would have got in too! Impressions of the unit.. It's quite hefty, but in a good solid way. Feels well put together. Controls are a little far apart initially, but you'll likely get used to that. Shame about lack of analogue shoulder triggers. Screen is nice and bright. Analogue nubs seem a bit lightweight. Rumble stuff seems ok but nothing revolutional. Games wise, the queues for Zelda were insane, looked lovely tho. Arms looked good. Controls wise a bit iffy but couldn't get much time to play. Mario kart was mario kart. 1 2 Switch, a total waste of time. All in all, I want one to play Zelda. It looks fantastic. Device is solid. But with the lack of third parties and further device info, I can see many people not bothering due to the high price.

Reynard
It's a weirdly divisive machine at the moment, as the desire to want one depends so much on your likely personal usage and your previous history. - Never owned a Wii U and go portable a lot: very good - Own(ed) a Wii U and go portable a lot: pretty good - Own(ed) a Wii U and don't really go portable: not very good

womblingfree
The portability has no more than a passing interest for me, but it'll definitely get used. I imagine it'll be a potential craze for school kids though. Cue Dad cursing the fact the remotes are missing. Pro-controller justified.
Broker
I play my Wii U and 3DS mostly at my house, and it's not like the Wii U console is big if I'm going somewhere else. As I can't play games in a moving car and don't ever get trains these things aren't really a selling point for me. The Wii U version of Zelda is as portable as I need it to be (bed and the toilet). Hardly any cost to them. Not sure they realise how important that game was for the Wii. A great suggestion! My other brain has a Switch, games and a pro-controller in the basket with my hand hovering over checkout. Before the pricing, I was thinking of getting it as a joint July birthday present for myself and my six year old (whom I woke up to watch the live event ;-) ). Then when it came to the £280 price point, I thought "that's too expensive, it can wait till Christmas". Then my wife reminded me that surely there will be loads of demand for this at Christmas and it's probably going to be sold out. And judging by the games being released by that point (Mario being the big one), it wouldn't surprise me if it was another hard to get console I'm the lead up to Xmas. So she convinced me I should get it for a birthday present. And my wife usually thinks of games as a waste of money....
TheSlugFormerlyKnownAsNap
What's the chance of Persona 5 appearing on the Switch? With the Vita all but dead I really want to play it on a (semi) portable rather than my PS4.

Doomguy
ffs nintendo... stop getting my hopes up then dashing them with OTT pricing and paying for online access. I like the system, the idea, the entire concept of the machine, but they keep fucking themselves over with the rest of the stuff. It's annoying. The blueprint to succeed is out there but it's like they want to stay in 2005 mode.
gooner4life
I've got 2 PS4's spare due to PS4 pro upgrades and Games trade in deal is pretty decent, I could trade them both in and get 2 Switch consoles for less than the price of 1 switch, at this point I'm probably in for 3 of them, my daughter wants one for her birthday, my son wants one for the portability and Mario, I'll get one for portable Fifa.
