I'm strangely feeling okay about the 3 hours of battery life. My phone connects via USB-C, and I imagine the next laptop or tablet I buy will too. In the case of the phone at least, sometimes I need to charge it at work, and I've been considering getting a battery pack for when I'm travelling. In the context of it probably supporting fast charging over a standard connector, battery life really doesn't feel like a big deal.

Zelda is the one running at 3 hours but that could be 3 hours at max screen brightness etc. You could probably get more out of the battery life.

In general, I'm dissapointed but not at all suprised by Nintendo's greed,

People should dispense with this notion immediately. Nintendo are not going to be making a huge amount of extra money on the system at this price. It's expensive because it's expensive; that's one of the problems Nintendo is just going to have to deal with.

"Battery life can last for more than six hours, but will vary depending on the software and usage conditions. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for roughly three hours on a single charge."

Is what they say.

Maybe Nintendo are being uncharacteristically generous with the Switch, but entering this market at this moment at that price is... well I think a woeful misjudgment. They need to have skimped on features to offer something that entices a majority of videogame players looking for a second system (haptic feedback perhaps, touch screen functionality perhaps, who knows, but I'm sure cheaper variations were considered) As a package, for the functionality offered, it is simply not enticing to me. And I bought a Wii U and am very much in love with a number of their games.

What do you base that on?

Cynicism. Nintendo are not going to be filling up their war chest off the back of that RRP, nor are they going to have scope to introduce sweeping price cuts while continuing to make a profit on the hardware. The universe is not that kind.

I think people are being stupidly unrealistic about price. The fact that Nintendo have produced a console which is significantly more powerful than an Xbox 360 that is a portable device is apparently being taken for granted.

The Xbox 360 came out in 2005.

Yeah, like I said earlier the comparison point people should be making is not a pizza box with an HDMI cable, a mains lead and a controller. It's something like the nVidia Shield Tablet, bundled with a docking station, two force-feedback motion controllers a dock and that controller grip thing. There isn't a Shield with the X1, but the K1 from over a year ago still costs £180 without any of that stuff in the box.

The fact that this thing is even possible is an incredible achievement. £280 is not bad at all.

£75 is clearly mental for a pair of controllers but you can see why they cost that much.

This is going to be an incredible console if and when they can sort out their online framework and software lineup.

If they weren't rushing it out to make the end of their fiscal year and they brought it out in Q3 with the online in place, Mario, Zelda, Arms and 3rd parties actually had something to show for themselves, it would be the best console release of all time.

I thInk underestimate how much the cost of technology has reduced in recent years. Especially in comparison to 360

Silicon advances a lot in 12 years. Not blown away by it being better than a 360.

Given that Apple only claimed to have caught up with that level of performance two years ago, in a device costing £500, you're going to have to be a bit more realistic about your expectations of portable devices.

You want a box that's as powerful as a PS4 or Xbox One and is portable? Drop a couple of grand on a gaming laptop.

I think the price of the system is pretty reasonable for what you get. If you compare the graphics to any other dedicated portable gaming device or tablet, it's way ahead. Gaming-wise it'll be a million times better than a much more expensive iPad. The screen seems to be very good, bright and colourful. I like the way you can use the controller for both TV and portable play. The prices for stuff like extra controllers is ridiculous though.

As a followup to Wii U or contender to the PS4/Xbone it's pretty underwhelming, but as followup to the Vita or 3DS it's pretty astonishing really.

Silicon may advance but for mobile platforms your always handicapped by battery life and technically speaking batteries haven't improved for a long time. The fact that you can output better graphics than a machine which still runs a good looking version of Rise of the Tomb raider, using about 5-6 watts of power is amazing, never mind that it features 8 times the memory and has to run a screen and charge joycons all at the same time.

People forget that the X360 was a beast of a machine for the time.

The joycons are apparently quite edgy technology.

To me it is like a they are bundling a gamecube 2 with a Vita 2, with innovative controls. For £280. It does not sound that bad to me.

I have a very capable i5 with an nvidia1060 so I can buy games in steam that I will never play because of life.

This console in the other hand gives me actual hopes of playing. The fact that is bed compatible is huge!!!.

Mobile tech costs a lot as it has very high R&D costs. Nvidias new shield, featuring the same Tegra chip as the previous version costs 190 quid, hell the pro version with snazzy controller costs 280!

The POWAR that would literally roast actively cooled full sized hardware can now travel with you! This is playing with POWAR!

As a Vita owner I share your hope but have the absolute unshakeable certainty that this will die on its arse. People don't deserve good handheld consoles as this thread is currently demonstrating.

Even for me £280 is too much, but I'm not going to delude myself into thinking it's some cynical ploy by Nintendo. That's just how much the console of all our dreams costs.
