Nintendo Switch

I'm getting one because i'm a Nintendo fanboy but the launch lineup looks sparse. To be fair launch lineups on new release consoles always are a bit barren as the thinking is get the diehards to buy it first then allow the software lineup to grow and hit the marketing hard at Christmas to grab everyone else, the problem is after the WiiU I don't think Nintendo have the goodwill among developers and consumers to hang on and wait, they really should have shown more games, even ports.

I wouldn't get one but I'm a Zelda fanboy. I have a WiiU but am worried it will clearly be the poorer version. So I need specs to come out and find out if it's more powerful or not as a console compared to WiiU. So I have to pre-order asap, then hold off on this info before deciding if to cancel or not.

I am torn.

Seems like launch lineup is not stellar, and the price is about 20% more than expected.

On the other hand I just watched both the MARIO and Zelda trailers and I have to say they were possibly 2 of the very best looking games I have ever seen. One at launch and one in year 1. If they are as good as they look then I am probably in. My son will love Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 is going to definitive.

Christmas purchase for me. 3rd party support is worrying. The worst bit was EA saying it was a very specific version of FIFA. I am prepared to be wrong but that does not bode well to me.

Hopefully more will trickle out in the treehouse.

I think we'll see slight price cuts accross the board by Xmas if this doesn't sell too well.

I only got a Wii U for Christmas 2015 but did that ever see a significant price cut?  I remember trying to find a decent deal for it but there really wasn't much to choose from.  In comparison to the various bundles for the PS4/XB1 there wasn't a massive choice.

I just wonder if the same thing will happen?

I'm probably in a negative mood, but Mario looked worse graphically than 3D World. And Zelda BotW has a fantastic art style but the graphical fidelity of textures/effects/etc is similar to late-generation 360 open-world games, if not slightly worse.

Do they look fun to play?

Yes.

Pre-ordered.

I still am uncertain how the Switch will replace the 3DS in Japan. Anecdotally I don't see people with tablets outside their house/on public transport, they're too large.

This is my worry. I keep reading posts suggesting that it's a perfectly viable successor to the 3DS, but I really don't see how it can be. You can't get on a bus or train during the morning school rush in Japan without seeing half a dozen kids playing on a 3DS - they're Nintendo's main market and the reason the 3DS has sold so well. And I just can't see said kids' parents suddenly buying them an expensive tablet as a replacement to the 3DS. Sony struggled to market the Vita as a portable.

The fact that Nintendo are still supporting 3DS into next year makes me think that the Switch is really only supposed to be a successor to the Wii U. Whether we see a new console in the DS line or a stripped down version of the Switch I don't know, but they've got to release a dedicated portable of some kind in the next two years or so.

Trying to catch up with this news (after sleeping through my alarm this morning and instead dreaming I was at a village fair fashion show), but is it correct that neither Analogue Triggers or the GameCube were mentioned? And its fucking pricey? But Zelda at launch and new Mario game looks HAMAZE!!11

Have gone from DAY ONE to falling back in love with my WiiU with a Switch purchase around Christmas.

The more I think about this the more fucked it seems - why would anyone get their kids the Switch over a PS4? The latter is better value in every way - £100 cheaper, comes with a pack in game, has a better value online service, a much much wider and better selection of games, probably cheaper games due to discs rather than carts, etc. There's no way this is going to hit their targets of Wii-style 100 million success, it's a more expensive Wii U in a new case.

Like the only selling point Switch has over PS4 is portability, except smartphones exist and you can already play Nintendo games on them, so why would parents line up to pay £340 to do that same thing better?

As one of 'THE FAITHFUL'TM I'm feeling a bit glum really, while Mario Odyssey looked interesting it reeked of Sonic Adventure 2 (and look how that 'helped' Sega's console business out ;) ), plus Splatoon 2, MK8.2 and BoTW (which I'll get on my Wii-U, unless it's cancelled then I just won't bother with it) just don't have enough pull to make it worth the frankly high price-point at launch.

Maybe once some more Nintendo exclusives are revealed it'll make it a bit more enticing (fingers crossed for new instalments of Metroid Prime or 2D, Kid Icarus, Wave Race, Advance Wars, Kirby 2D, F-Zero, 1080, Starfox, Sin & Punishment, Luigi's Mansion or even StarTropics) plus they need to really get on with getting third-party support and their titles made aware to the public.

EA is a good start but realistically Activision and Ubisoft need to be fully on-board to help buoy sales, which given how they both got burned with the poor reception of their Wii & Wii-U ports isn't that likely IMO.

Pinched from Neogaf, the first year lineup for Japan doesn't look quite so bad:

Quote

March 3 (Launch Titles)
    1-2-Switch
    Disgaea 5 Complete
Dragon Quest Heroes I & II
    I Am Setsuna
Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence with Power Up Kit
    Puyo Puyo Tetris S
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII with Power Up Kit
    Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together!
    Super Bomberman R
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

April 28
    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Spring 2017
    ARMS
    Minna de Waiwai! Spelunker

Summer 2017
    Splatoon 2

Winter 2017
    Super Mario Odyssey

2017
    Xenoblade 2

TBD
    Arcade Archives
    BlazBlue
    Derby Stallion
    Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
    Dragon Quest X
    Dragon Quest XI
    FIFA
    Fire Emblem Warriors
    Minecraft: Switch Edition
    NBA 2k18
    New Frontier Days: Founding Pioneers
    Project Octopath Traveler
    Project Sonic 2017
    Shin Megami Tensei
    Sonic Mania
    Story of Seasons
    Taiko no Tatsujin
    “Tales of” series
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

Lots of ports of course, but I'd be happy if Dragon Quest Heroes and the Koei strategy games arrive over here (and no reason why they shouldn't given that all have been localised on PS4). They'd be a good fit for a handheld like the Switch.

A western release of Dragon Quest X is fanciful at this stage but I'd forgive Nintendo for every cock-up in this morning's reveal if they decided to pick that up and localise it as they did VII and VIII on the 3DS.

I'm guessing SMT will come to PS4 as well - they'd have announced it as an exclusive otherwise.

Guy, I've just checked my launch PS Vita order... £259.99, pre-Brexit. My 3DS was about £200 and PS4 was £430.

This is the best handheld console ever and a home console in one, and we have added Brexit tax. The price is fine.

Launch day price of the 3DS was about £260 irrc.

If it is genuinely the successor. There's always the chance Sony will bring out a successor to the PS Vita as they could nick a lot of the 3ds sales? You never know.

My guess is they have something designed just in case it doesn't take off in that regards.

Like the only selling point Switch has over PS4 is portability, except smartphones exist and you can already play Nintendo games on them, so why would parents line up to pay £340 for that niche user experience?

Several reasons. 1) As you said It doesn't need a TV to be played, they can play it in the car, in the living room, in their bedroom, wherever. 2) It has some very firm favourites on it, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon (eventually), Mario Kart and Splatoon are big games that my girls will want to play. 3) My girls don't really have friends on the Playstation, despite having their own accounts. And not all games allow them to play online anyway, as they are sub-accounts of mine and only I have PS+, so we'll have to see what the online offering from Nintendo is yet to compare.4) If I get Minecraft on mine and my daughter gets Minecraft on hers then I'd hope (hope) that we could play together whenever we want, rather than just a couple of hours a week when she is with me. Shared server would be even better, but I'm not going to hold out any hope for that.

My 14 year old, would love to have her own PS4, and she has a TV in her room, but there's very little that she'd actually play on it. She gets full use of the PS4 at my house now and rarely plays it, her most played games at the moment are Hyrule Warriors (still) Attack On Titan (PS4) and Pokemon Moon.

My kids understand the difference between Nintendo handhelds and mobiles, but then I'm a gamer dad, so i can only speak from my own experiences. Neither of them liked Run Mario because you had to pay for it and they don't have any spare money for things like that. My 14 year old rinsed Pokemon Go for a fortnight then uninstalled it and hasn't been back since. They play ro-blocks (blox?) on their phones when there's nothing else to do. Or they play crappy cheap nothing games and yet my 14 year old still spent £30 of her Christmas money on getting AOT on PS4, so they do appreciate Big Boxed games as well as throwaway ones.

If I asked them if they wanted a new phone or a Switch in March, they'd both choose a Switch. In fact i might do that as a test later to see what they say.

The market changes. What was X then might not be worth X now.

Vita flopped, 3ds too until a big price cut and ps4 was 350 at launch though getting it for a but less not too hard with competition. And it came when the market was desperate for a new console.
