Nintendo Switch

Well that was the cringiest thing I've watched since E3 two years ago, the stoner translator didn't help either!

Still, on the bright side - region free! On the negative, pretty much everything else: I don't mind a paid subscription service but having to faff around with a Smartphone will be a massive pain in the arse - assuming you *have* to, didn't seem very clear and it still felt like Nintendo were quite sure on Online gaming. Also I hope it's cheap because I can't imagine there's going to be many - if any multi-format games that I'd the Switch version over.

Game-wise; Mario didn't do it for me - could be good but I just really wished they stayed away from the real world setting completely. No Hearthstone or Overwatch, no Pokemon, no Smash - nothing really that interesting except maybe Arms and well, Zelda. Graphically nothing seemed much more advanced than the WiiU... No mention of an extensive back-catalog or any transferring of VC games to the new system....

Yet another paid online service is a shame. I'll probably cancel Xbox Live to make up the difference. Looks like there will be a free NES or SNES game each month and they also say that SNES games may have online play added?

The wording makes it sounds like you only get the game for that single month, though...

The wording makes it sound exactly like you only get the game for a month which is fucking insane. Good luck getting folk to stump up money for that Nintendo, one 25 year old game if you're lucky - yours to play for a whole month? Spoiling us.

Wait, their PSN+/GwG equivalent, you don't actually keep the game for as long a syou subscribe, you just get to play if for the month in question? Am I reading that right? If so, oh my lol.

You're reading it right, it seems completely unambiguous. Unless it's around a tenner a year they can get stuffed.

Why is Zelda £80 on Amazon UK, when it's $60 on Amazon US?

They do it with most things. Many XB1 and PS4 games go up at £60 on announcement until the official price is confirmed, then it drops and you pay the lowest price. Also, where you seeing it? I can't get any switch games to show on Amazon.

According to Eurogamer, Nintendo confirmed £59.99 for Zelda, which is absurd but in line with the usual suggested price for a new console's software. It'll be available for £49.99-54.99 online before launch.

Nintendo don't set an RRP anymore (in the UK at least) and havent since the N64 games. Other games are popping up on GAME at £45-£50 so I think it will be about that on Amazon.

I wonder if the "single cable for everything" approach means eventually you might not even need the dock to take the switch over to someone's house. Both power and HDMI are both things you can do over USB without doing any custom stuff. It's perfectly reasonable to think TVs in the future would be able to handle these both over a single cable, and therefore allow the Switch to run in "console mode". We all know the dock isn't doing anything particularly special at this point, so why not.

The expensive games must be due to the cartidge format, right?

Precision.  You can't touch small objects because your finger gets in the way.   Resistive + stylus is far better for stuff like this.

It wouldn't require too much for them to retool the UI, especially if it's multi-touch. l've done plenty of things on iOS devices that require considerable accuracy.

And / or offer a version of Mario Maker with a capacitive stylus bundled. It wouldn't have to be Apple Pencil level to do the job. Something approaching the quality of a comparatively rudimentary accessory like the Samsung S-Pen would suffice.

The confirmed games pretty much all fall into one of three categories: Nintendo first-party, available elsewhere, or crap.

And most of the first party stuff are either literally ports of Wii U games or enhanced Wii U games which have been out for years.   They either needed to have the balls to cancel Zelda for the Wii U or have Mario ready for launch.

As it is, it looks like they are launching about 6 months too soon.  Launch in October and then have Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart and Splatoon on hand for the holiday period and the launch line up looks much more healthy.
