I'd be surprised if  Super Mario was a launch title. We don't even know the name of it yet, right? 6 months from hearing about it for the first time to actually being able to buy it seems... unlikely. It's Nintendo we're talking about here.

Why would they show it before now though?

Zelda will definitely happen but Mario Switch seems like it's still very much in development. Considering the big PR tour they've had for Zelda compared to the 2 seconds of off-screen footage for Mario I think it's very unlikely we'll see that game at launch. And wouldn't two of their biggest hitters simply cannibalize each other as launch titles?

It's been 3 years since Super Mario 3D World came out, so it's very possible they'll have a Mario title to launch with. No Switch exclusives have been formally announced yet, and we only know about Zelda because it was planned to come out on the Wii U a year or two ago.

Stop giving them hope. You're just being cruel now.

@ashmatuk Hype would be the main reason. 12 months of fans salivating over a new Mario game is better than 6.

About the rumours about the RAM being just 4GB - I'm wondering if that's such a terrible thing. Both the PS4 and XB1 have very heavy operating systems which reserve 2.5 - 3.5GB for themselves, which in the PS4's case can vary. So if they make the OS much lighter than the competitions', they might actually be competing on quite a level playing field. I'm assuming that Nintendo won't want to make the Switch an all-singing, all-dancing media machine, and you probably won't have the same social functions. That would be a bit of a shame but if they want to make it possible to port PS4 / XB1 titles easily, something will have to give. Also, more RAM does mean less battery life, Apple have justified having less than the competition in their iPhones for this very reason. But the other rumours about the SOC powering this thing aren't tremendously positive either.

It is terrible, the Scorpio is due next year. This is going to be looking pretty old in the tooth if it can't even keep up with the current PS4/Xbone. And you say make a lighter OS... did you see the launch Wii U effort? It's still slow all these years later, they can't make an efficient OS, they are struggling to keep up making HD games.

The WiiU OS was linux based. This is most likely android based and made in partnership with nvidia. If the reports on it's footprint is true then it uses roughly 800 meg of memory. It should be okay. Nvidia have experience with this sort of thing.

Don't you mean this year? I'm not sure PS4 Pro / Scorpio are that relevant in terms of third party support, given that those third parties will be mainly targeting the base systems still. If it's anything like the Pro, it will only offer improved resolutions and maybe a few extra graphical effects. If the Switch matched the base systems, they could probably guarantee a few years of cross platform games mostly getting ported to it until the genuine successors arrive.

The PS Pro announcement was truly inspiring.

'4K! HDR! Moar pixels!'

There's a huge market of gamers who aren't interested in the PS Pro. I own every console from the last 15 years and I won't be buying one until there's a compelling reason for me to bother. On the other hand, plenty of my non-gamer friends are interested in the Switch, particular for Mario Kart and Zelda.

Has anyone heard back from Nintendo regarding the switch launch event? Leaving it pretty late if they haven't sent out emails.

Starting to run out of time to book a day off ..

It seems like Nintendo haven't been sending out any email confirmation as all the details are on the page shown once you have registered.

A quick recap...

Venue: Eventim Apollo
Registration time: 30 mins before your session was set to begin (e.g 12.30 for the 1pm session)
Bring Photo ID

I prefer an email to confirm but doesn't seem likely unless they waiting until next week to send them out.

Yes I did but I'm still too old in the tooth so it's 2016  No, ignore the Pro it's not on par with Scorpio and it's really just about on par with the XBone S (both are just cut down models to save costs). If Scorpio comes out and is the powerhouse MS are claiming it to be then Sony won't be far behind with a similar model. Nintendo will effectively have a 3GS againt an iPhone 6. The problem for Nintendo is they desperately need 3rd party support, they can't have another Wii U and for that they need 3rd party support for multi platform releases.  The Wii audience has long since gone, it's not coming back and relying on the hardcore Nintendo fans ended up with the Wii U sales so they need to being doing more.

Which, for people that just want to make calls, is not an issue.

Honestly, when will people stop all the spec-race bullshit and just appreciate the content. It's been proven time and time again that just being the best hardware makes absolutely no difference. If Nintendo can deliver good content, they'll be fine.

Well with the Wii U they managed a first year drought and an 18-month period of mostly shovelware at the end, which gave it like a decent 18 months in the middle there out of four years? The spec stuff matters for third parties, who matter because people are skeptical Nintendo can deliver consistent releases.

Rarely has there been so much wrong in one post.

Pro is far superior to XBone S, if we are talking raw power.

Neither Xbone S is Pro is a "cut down version to save costs."

Nintendo are not competing with MS/Sony and have not done so since they got so tragically humped with Gamecube.

People do not buy Nintendo consoles for third party games

Nintendo are going to make a console that is more powerful than the Scorpio and Xbox S-Club put together and get Activisions to make Call Of Duty Space Marine an exclusive on it with Virtual Reality goggles - and make Sony and Micosoft pay for it. Make Nintendo great again!

HDR you should get excited about, but it's not a pro-specific feature. As far as I understand it, PS4 Pro sales haven't been great, although I imagine at least part of that is down to the presence of the One S and a massively discounted PS4 Consumer Edition. I imagine most of the sales have been to existing PS4 owners, who happen to have a lot of money and also nice tellies (probably not completely unrelated) and want the best experience short of PC land.

If that's right, then the Xbox One lineup would contain three separate models, with a huge disparity in performance between them. Yet developers won't be allowed to make scorpio-exclusive titles. To most people, the difference isn't going to be clear and they'll just choose the cheaper option. Without unique experiences that differentiate the new console, Sony are unlikely to feel threatened in any way.

Nintendo's handhelds have been doing okay though right? This is a handheld. I'm kind of expecting it to clean up in Japan, and do slightly better than the Gamecube in the west. I think the idea that they need big AAA titles from western developers to succeed isn't really true, that doesn't play to their strengths. My hope is that the Switch is a sort of stopgap as they completely transition to a mobile-first strategy and possibly stop making hardware altogether.

If they deliver as many quality titles on Switch as they have on Wii U, I'll be happy. And that's all I care about really.

Bash it all you like, but Wii U gave us MK8, Splatoon, Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Bayonetta, Pikmin 3, Xenoblade, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Wonderful 101 etc - it wasn't short on really high-quality content. People can be skeptical of Nintendo on many things, but I don't think the consistent quality of their output can be reasonably one of them.
