The Pokemon devs have said the next one will be on different hardware.

Exclusively? I've seen reports that Game Freak intend to release Sun and moon on Switch, but nothing about the next one. Sorry, I;m not doubting I just haven't seen anything.

The lower than expected clock speeds perhaps suggest that they will release a smaller, more portable version of the Switch (perhaps without the dock) somewhere down the line. Maybe they really see it as a handheld first and a home console second, whereas many of us have been assuming the opposite.

Well, if the Switch is just another underpowered machine but now with traditional controls I can't see why they even bother to release hardware at all if the only USP it has is offering sub-Wii U portability on a screen that might be too large and vulnerable for real world use anyway. Now that Mario on mobile phones is apparently the best thing since sliced bread I'm sure the idea of developing for PS4/Xbone shouldn't be considered as blasphemous as last year, or is it...?

It's not going to be sub-Wii U - that's just Nintendoomed trolling. And a screen too large and 'vulnerable' for real world use - you mean like all the iPads out there? Honestly, you can do better than that Nap.

It's going to be somewhere between Wii U and XBone/PS4 - so about where virtually everyone level-headed thought it was going to be in the first place. Megaton.

I never take my iPad with me on train or bus, but I do take my 3DS. What's your point?

My point is that iPads are in use all over the place - Heathrow (for example) is crawling with kids/adults of all ages using them to play games, watch videos etc - last time I checked, there wasn't a major worry that the screens were far too large or vulnerable to make them portable. Of all the things that will be thrown at Switch, that's probably one of the most ridiculous.

This new set of rumours really changes nothing. We still don;t know the full picture, we still know it won't be as powerful as a PS4 (newsflash), and we still know the thing that will really make or break the system will be the software that Nintendo (and hopefully others) come up with for it.

nintendo are stuck in a loop. True - the wii stalled a generation with its success, but the hunger for the PS4 and stillbirth of the Wii U - showed those days have passed.

nintendo should have released something that comfortably played Battlefield/Ass Creed etc and was not far off the power of the other guys. The USP being we do what they do - BUT you can take it anywhere!! Thats a pretty compelling prospect.

but now they are going to be stuck with underpowered hardware (most phones will properly kick its ass within 12 months) and the idea that you can now plug your DS/3DS into a TV - rather than - you can take your home console with you ANYWHERE you go!

I love nintendo - but I think they need some new leadership.

It depends what you want from a Nintendo console. I just don't know how compelling the portable aspect is to the PS4/Xbone crowd; any more than, say, Vita is. I don't want to play  COD or battlefield on my Nintendo, I have a PS4 for that, I want to play Zelda and Mario games.

Nintendo are never ever going to compete in a me too world, and I am glad they don't even try to.

I think people are concerned with Switch not selling very many and this becoming another WiiU. And it may well turn out that way ; But is this a bad thing? Did it stop first part content? Microsoft and Sony are dealing in 7,8 ,9 year dev cycles. Nintendo, I think, are dealing in 4 year cycles. Does anyone think the Switch is a console for the next decade?

I think if you buy into Switch you buy into 3 things.

1. Excellent first party games, if with a slow release rate.

2. Limited third party support

3. A 5 year lifespan maximum.

i think the point is those third party games would suddenly become portable - unlike your PS4 or Xbone. AND you have nintendo's killer 1st party support.

Portability of COD et al doesn't automatically translate into hardware sales. Again, using Vita as an example with remote play.

But with that sort of audience comes the constant flow of games which the Switch needs. It'll be a disaster if all it ever gets is a few token Nintendo titles. They already struggling to put out HD stuff on the WiiU, making more improved stuff visually will just stretch them further and mean less games. They NEED 3rd party stuff.

Why does it need a constant flow of 3rd party stuff you can get on PS4/Bone?

Again I go back to the point; what do you buy a Nintendo console for?

I sold the Wii U. It was a poor showing right from launch, it's all very well having a few good Nintendo games but when I'm dropping that much money on a system I expect a decent flow of games coming out for it. Otherwise it's a dust collector.

As much as it would be great to see them get loads of third party support, just to see if they can expand their audience and secure their continued future, it seems to me that the Switch is going to be the perfect partner console.

Most people have now jumped into this gen with PS4, Pro, Xbox and S, so it'd be futile for them to try and expect to steal anyone away from those consoles. People have invested in those consoles' ecosystems more than ever before this gen and they'd be loathed to ditch it all just to start again with most games undoubtedly running worse. That ship has sailed.

As it is, and as long as the price is right and they continue to market it better than they did the WiiU, then I'm sure people won't mind too much about having two consoles if they're into quality games. Maybe.

I know I'll be picking one up for Zelda and the rumoured Mario, and hopefully now they're concentrating all their development resources into a single platform (yeah, I'm ignoring the 3DS. Its days are surely numbered), then I can foresee a steady stream of games until I pick up a Scorpio for it to sit beside.

I can't wait.

Until they shout themselves in the foot over something nobody has yet predicted at the launch event in January.

Is that a sustainable business model? Genuine question, assuming no further Wii blips.

I honestly don't know. I think you have to almost discard Wii. And if you do that then Nintendo have never been a massive player in the Home console market; at least not to Sony /MS levels. Yes SNES sold 50 million, but that was in its entire 10-12 year lifespan. PS4 is at that after 3 years.

They are huge in the handheld market, obviously. And perhaps people are right, perhaps this should be viewed as a portable first and home console second. But that's not what Nintendo are saying

www.polygon.com/2016/10/20/13347910/nintendo-switch-home-gaming-system+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

They are saying this is a home system first and will continue with 3DS.

I think Nintendo are not projecting Wiii levels of sales for this console and are perfectly comfortable with that.

Any sense of how they'll approach 3rd parties? Given it's architecture, I assume it's reasonable to suppose certain popular mobile games would translate to it. That may be a foot in the door, but not unless it has the fairly open mobile developer approach.
