A few years ago nobody wanted full-size console-like experiences on the move, that's why the PSP and Vita failed and the DS/3DS succeeded. But now it's the best idea ever.

The big kicker here, after you've finished being 'on the move' you just carry on at home. On your TV, on the same device, from exactly where you were. It's a totally different proposition IMO. It's both a mobile and a home device - not one or the other exclusively.

Some titles will be better suited to mobile play sure, but both will be possible.

I know, and I've always been a fan of the 'big' games on portable formats - I've spent over 100 hours on Vita Persona 4 Golden for example. But it was always an argument brought up on why the PSP/Vita weren't successful - you need quick pick up & play games, lots of check/save points and not too much stuff like story/cutscenes and the like. Although that went overboard with the huge success of Monster Hunter anyway I think.

But you know me, I like to take arguments from the old days and smack 'em right back in your face :)

They're either trying to protect the 3DS, or they've got a successor on the way. I'm not sure which.

They are clearly just trying to protect the 3DS at this point - they know Wii U is dead, but there are a few million 3DS sales out there still with Pokemon etc - no point cutting those off at the knees for no reason.

The comments about it being a "home console" are a bit worrying. They're either trying to protect the 3DS, or they've got a successor on the way. I'm not sure which.

But that is the entire USP this time, a home quality console you can also effortlessly take with you on the go if you want to. It's not positioned as a mobile-first device that you can also attach to a TV. So for about the same money as the competition, you are looking for customers who want a device that plays home console-style games on the go, which isn't the same as a customer who wants mobile-style games on the go and has no interest in playing those games on a big TV at home.

True. A home console that you can play anywhere sounds better/more powerful than a handheld console that you can connect to your TV.

I'm coming at it from the perspective that I would like it to be the successor to both the Wii U and 3DS so it would be a "home and handheld console". I get that they may just be protecting the 3DS as it's got a bit of life in it. I also get that they may want to continue releasing handhelds. Too early to tell really.

it won't actually - as when I'm out of the house, the kids won't be able to play Zelda or Mario... so, I imagine I'm going to have to buy two of the things and since there'll be no shared account system, I'll have to buy multiple copies of the same game.

This is not ideal.

I don't care though... I'm buying the absolute fuck out of this

Why? Why do you HAVE to be buying this for your kids? It's not food, medicine or clothing. Or do you buy hundreds of pounds worth of Nintendo goods and throw and at your kids while screaming "love them, love them like your father!!!".

I'm imagining that a particular harrowing parental experience for you will be the day that one of your kids tells you that they don't want any of this Nintendo shit as it's for babies and poofs.

Which is perfectly reasonable. How many thousands of people don't play on Nintendo consoles because they don't have third-party games?

You took the comment too seriously. It's Scott, there's pride in being a Nintendo lover when it's Scott.

Glarey? What what what? It looked matte to me in the reveal trailer. If it's a glossy screen it'll be in the dock, charged with crimes against eyeballs.

Aw, just scrolled through the reggie video. you're right, it's glossy.

Well, I suppose the no doubt shoddy battery life means that it'll constantly be docked anyway and there'll be matte screen protectors you can buy.

I wouldn't use glossy in the house, nevermind outdoors. That's a pretty bad design decision.

Its easier to slap a matte screen protector if needed on a glossy screen than fix an matte screen whereby color reproduction wouldn't be as great Not saying its not possible but a decent matte screen with good color reproduction and Adobe RGB would add an significant chunk to the budget.

Still think this is true. But I think Nintendo had some research where most people were playing the DS plugged in at home anyway. That's the use case for me - equivalent to Wii U off screen play with the bonus of extending to the toilet this time.

Atmospheric fog and foliage details and density suggest this is much more powerful than the Wii U for sure... but that's not a difficult feat nowadays.  But good news for those worried about the specs.

It kind of reminds me of the Witcher 3, in Velen midday just looking at that tree line.

has the battery life been covered yet?

Some accessories were leaked the other day; one of which was a USB-C charging cable. So I'm not really fussed what the battery life is any more. If it is over 4 hours, great. If not and I'm taking it out of the house for longer than that then I'm probably going to have my bag with me and so I'll also have my handy dandy power block doodad... If I'm at home and playing for longer than 3 or 4 hours then it'll have to be tethered to something but I'll survive somehow.

I think, what it is, is an independent developer releasing a few screenshots for a game that does not and will never exist. By saying it's a Switch exclusive they are guaranteeing exposure for their company.
