Nintendo have a partner program for YouTube and support YouTube upload in Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U, so they obviously don't have a problem with streaming.

It's a pretty terrible program. Most big names keep away from it and they go after creators for anything Nintendo related no matter how old. I just gave up on covering them at all because of it, might not think it's much but people have been leaving them in droves because of it. Word like that spreads and it reduces any attempt at market share.

Which has nothing to do with their stance on streaming.

Well there stance on streaming seems to be the same the reason it wasn't on WiiU as a pack in feature was because "it isn't fun" as per Reggie. If you monetise any recorded stream footage its claimed by Nintendo if monetized if not it has their ads placed on and they claim all revenue.

The monetisation argument has been done to death. Wanting to monetise video doesn't mean that they don't like streaming.

The Wii U most likely didn't have the hardware to do encoding in real-time. I could see the Switch having it, although maybe only when it's docked.

Well you brought up the partner program and streaming so what do you expect? Are we not meant to reply?

With that encoding comment I don't think you really understand what you are talking about.

Reply if you like.

I said that Nintendo don't have a problem with streaming and I said why. You brought up the issues with their YouTube program. What it comes down to is that Nintendo and creators don't agree on how Nintendo IP can be used and monetised. Some people think that Nintendo are in the right. Some people think that they aren't. It's a totally separate issue.

You'll have to explain that encoding thing to me. What is it that I don't understand exactly? Encoding H264 is a computationally intensive task. Not a like-for-like comparison obviously, but it takes hours for my i7 2600K to re-encode my Blu-Ray rips. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Nintendo didn't even think of including the functionality at the design stage and they were unable to bolt it on later.

My kids won't be getting much Switch action, especially when Dad isn't around as it will be with me at all times. I'll probably just hide the dock behind the telly and leave the Wii U Gamepad accessible. 8-)

The Wii U has good few years left in the living room yet methinks.

I'm not a Wii hater at all and I enjoyed my Wii U, but I'm even more excited for this, as excited as I was when I had pre-ordered my Jap GC. I think it is a continuation of what I loved from both their home and handheld divisions, it is like an ultra Gameboy combined with a home console. I'll be day one for the Switch, the added bonus is no need to import this time! I'm going to hoover up everything on this for the first few months, I know it

the great thing with the switch is that its USP is *very* easy to communicate... 'hey, you've got to go somewhere but you're into your game... just pick it up and take it with you'.

I look forward to many years of reading about how this new Nintendo device *perfectly* fits into your life and everyday activities, and those of your family and co-workers.

it won't actually - as when I'm out of the house, the kids won't be able to play Zelda or Mario... so, I imagine I'm going to have to buy two of the things and since there'll be no shared account system, I'll have to buy multiple copies of the same game.

This is not ideal.

I don't care though... I'm buying the absolute fuck out of this

and to add... due to the nature of the thing... I imagine the kids will end up wanting one each..

OUCH

All joking aside, I really really hope they have a single account usable across multiple machines, but I'm not holding my breath.  I'd even pay a small fee to allow that, you know, like Netflix allows you to pay more to stream to more devices.

That sounds dreadful. Who do they expect to sell this thing to? It'll be perceived as a tablet (fairly), and you can get Kindle Fires for peanuts and share purchases across a family account, not to mention essentially unlimited games with that kids subscription thing.

Sorry, I'm sure this has been covered, but that statement above stuck out to me as a hard sell for Nintendo.

A few years ago nobody wanted full-size console-like experiences on the move, that's why the PSP and Vita failed and the DS/3DS succeeded. But now it's the best idea ever.

I've always wanted it... My Vita doesn't get played because it doesn't have games on it I want to play anymore.

It's not really the same thing. I buy handhelds to play the games, not for the form factor. I'd rather game on the TV. If the Switch can serve everyone then it's a win win.

The comments about it being a "home console" are a bit worrying. They're either trying to protect the 3DS, or they've got a successor on the way. I'm not sure which.
