Some light bug-fixing on the Gamecube VC games would be quite nice. Stuff like a brute-force fix for the slightly finicky collision in Mario Sunshine, and some camera tweaks for example.

Sega doing a VC version of Super Monkey Ball, that utilises the sit-round multi-player with the tiny controllers for the mini-games, would be pure magic.

Would be neat though.  Have a service like Steam, where you buy a game and it stays in your library forever.

So if you bought Super Mario RPG on VC back on the Wii or something, it stays with you, linked to an online account.

It wouldn't be a terrible idea and might actually benefit Nintendo in the long run.  Of course physical disc games wouldn't be able to be claimed digitally, due to the market for buying used games nowadays.  But this could give people more incentive to buy digitally.

Trouble is that unlike Steam or iOS, every time they release a VC game on a new platform they're basically doing the work all over again. It's not the same app.

It's like how they expect people to pay for the HD and Special Edition versions of Steam games, either as upgrades or the full price. New work gets done, Shakespeare gotta get paid son.

They could perhaps consider their own operating system, like a custom version of linux or android, which they can then use on each new platform, allowing for better backwards compatibility for their digital VC titles.

I didn't resent paying the upgrade fee for the Wii games to get the extra Wii U features. I think that's the best way to do it - you pay once for the content, and then pay for the wrapper each time to upgrade to a new console.

Selling their old shit again and again is a big part of Nintendo's core business so why would they invest in R&D to solve a problem that is actually making them money?

Diminishing returns? The number of people willing to shell out for classic retro games at £3 a pop has to be getting smaller and smaller and buying fewer and fewer titles, they'll have to switch to a different approach eventually. Having some sort of catalogue which people could ostensibly complete and then take with them might work.

It would also fit in nicely with any plans they might have to keep upgrading the Switch while retaining software catalogue compatibility.

That would solve the no-analogue-triggers problem at least!

The reason why Nintendo don't have analogue triggers now is because they refused to pay the patent for them, after losing the case against the patent holder (Microsoft and Sony opted to pay the patent rights).

Maybe they've changed it, although I'm not sure if the recent GC controller re-release had analogue triggers or not.

I could be wrong, but I think you might be mis-remembering the Immersion Corporation patent suit on multi-point rumble. Microsoft settled, Sony didn't, eventually Sony did and the Dual Shock 3 finally came out.

Edit - Or umpteen other ridiculous controller patent lawsuits actually. Didn't Philips have a go at the Wii Remote once?

If they can figure out a way of playing GameCube games on it, I'd be over the moon. I still don't have a good way of playing my collection now I've sold my official component cable. Playing through Luigi's Mansion and Metroid Prime again on the handheld would be wonderful. I really would buy the lot.

I'm really hoping for a PS+ style subscription service. I don't mind paying 10 quid a month or whatever if it comes with perhaps a couple of NES/SNES games and one N64/GC game (plus discounts, free online, etc). It's not going to happen though is it? I've bought Super Mario Kart on Wii and Wii U Nintendo, I'm not fucking buying it a third time (I totally am).

No, it isn't going to happen. In the grand scheme of things Nintendo do not have that many games to put on such a service. Netflix has thousands and thousands of hours of televisual entertainment to supply. Nintendo not so much.

And thats before contemplating all the licensing issues when to trying to get third parties to sign up.

Jeez,  American chat show hosts get far too excited.

Jammy fallon is a decent host and he does love Nintendo. also I'm sure this segment is going to do wonders for advertising the switch.

Mario run looking good too.

I remember listening to Retronaughts in 2006 where they were excited about the VC and its possibilities, the chance of a proper library with access to everything... instead there was nothing but a dribble then it pretty much died off with releases. Nintendo won't do anything with it as a service the main excuse given has always been it costs around 10K to sort each title (that includes things like child ratings which have to be done) which is an awful lot of sales for less known titles probably not even worth it. So I wouldn't bother getting excited to any degree we will be lucky to see all of the old games from the Wii VC brought across but I think even Sega has given up on the idea.
