When were Apple seen as the devil incarnate?

I find this a weird ass post.

I've not noticed anyone mention disparaging / negative statements about Apple in the Nintendo threads, and maybe I'm projecting a bit here but I thought Miyamoto's appearance at the Apple event illicited more sighs and shrugs than anything thing else. Since then though I don't think there's any reasonably clued-up individual on here who'd pre-emptively dismiss a smartphone game designed ground up by EAD as iOS endless runner #98927659154, unless I missed something there as well.

The thread titled "RIP Nintendo" for them going mobile and all the reactions when they initially announced their plans?

EDIT: Some great quotes in there going back another four years too. I don't know why people try and pull this revisionist stuff on a site where everything is archived, seems a bit daft.

Oh look, it's Harsin with a snarky passive aggressive Nintendo post!

I mean honestly, I don't think anyone in here has said anything which gets even remotely close to the nonsense you just typed there. Who is calling them satan? Who has called them a super best friend? Who has really said anything about Apple other than talking about Super Mario Run at all?

This thread is going just fine - don't try and derail it with trolling fanboy bait nonsense mate.

I was thinking more of the 3DS thread (’smartphones are a fad') and related threads where any mention of enjoying gaming on iPhones or iPads and their growing popularity used to be treated as if you'd just admitted to buying a load of Gary Glitter CDs. I admit I was a bit snarkier than needed though.

The Xbox One/PS4 is underpowered compared to a PC (you can spend £4-5k on an off the shelf gaming PC if you really want to)

That's an odd figure to go for. You can build a PC that hugely outperforms consoles for, I dunno, £800? Less? And I'd say a lot of people go for PC builds between that and £1.5k.

Not a lot of people are building £4-5k gaming PCs, I'll wager.

You don't build a console; hence why "off the shelf". I also used the word "can" not do.

I don't think Take Two said anything remotely positive about the Wii U from the moment it was announced did they? This kind of overtly positive stuff is a definite shift from them, and follows one of their games being in the trailer as well. I think we can assume at this point that they are at least going to dip their [little] toe in and see how the water feels....

Oh boy, Tabletennis is finally coming home!

Or mario kart, I've heard.
If it's all true about the lacklustre launch lineup, I'm still pumped to buy one, so long as there's one decent game at launch, I'm in. I'll pretend it's for my nephew.

This is the first nintendo console without control gimmicks in 15 years!
I'm assuming devs will have to make touchscreen controls completely optional since the games will need to be playable while the console is docked.

The wii-u pro controller is great and the pro controller on this looks like more of the same.
Yes, they're both 360 pad knock-offs but that's exactly what you want.

It was weird seeing their new marketing approach in the reveal video. Not a kid, Ant or a Dec in sight. No family at all in fact, no mams, dads or grannies.

You what mate?

This looks like the most convoluted control system they've ever created to me. It can be a standard pad (albeit with a massive screen in the middle). But wait, you can slide them off and put a bit of plastic in between to make it more like a real controller, or a retarded dog. They can also slide off to become Wiimote and nunchuck. Or you can split them between 2 of you and have the tiniest controllers in the world. Or you can buy a Pro Pad, or whatever it's called, if you feel like you want something comfortable.

I understand that they've gone this route to encourage same room multiplayer, but I wish it'd had just been a handheld that you can dock, then pick up a pad to game on your TV.

Much simpler.

To be fair though, they've done a pretty good job at making it all seem incredibly logical.

It's a remaster of a five year old game. That's not saying much.

You're not going to get PS4 in a handheld device like that... you'll get WiiU+

which means we'll be getting an amazing looking Monster Hunter and it's certainly powerful enough to run a Souls game

You're still choosing the most extreme end of the scale though. £4-5K PCs are NOT representative of the market.

Add in a monitor and a 5.1 surround system, a decent keyboard/mouse/controllers and you're talking a good £2.5k for a decent set up on PC. OK, not £4-5k but the Switch is under £200. Yes, you can play your PC games on a TV and use an AV Amp if you have one but a proper PC gaming system isn't inexpensive or in toy territory.  If you buy a Switch, it's going to be powerful enough to run Nintendo games for under £200.

I wish people would stop nit picking about power (the tired and oft-repeated, they'll tape two together) or worrying about controller options - it will have a controller that will work quite well. It won't force you to download an 18 gig patch either.

I can't wait. No chance I'm buying a PS4 or an Xbox One now.

To be fair, again, you don't have to use it as any of those things.. unless you want to.  You can essentially just use it as a handheld that you can dock, then pick up a pad to game on your TV.

Which, I imagine, is what most people will do. Negating the need for its convoluted design and making it completely pointless that it was designed that way as devs don't bother utilising those features.

It's been Nintendo's biggest problem for a while now. Over-complicating shit just leads to less third party support, because devs just don't see the money in creating special versions of their games for a tiny audience.

Then again, maybe it'll take off. I just can't see it though, unfortunately.

It doesn't seem convoluted as it's not a Wii U. If that's what you mean. Devs didn't have to use the touchscreen/dual screen of the Wii U - if anything, that was under-utilised by even some of the Nintendo releases (Mario Kart hardly uses it and Splatoon kind of did but didn't really beyond being able to jump to another part of the map and keep you eye on the ink coverage but I certainly didn't use it often in Splatoon); it had a lot more potential than was realised which was a shame.

Criticise it by all means but don't criticise something for what it isn't. Imagine an Xbox One or a PS4 that you can play on the TV and then take outside or take to bed or take to the toilet to have a poo - that's what this very much seems to be.

Looks like you can leave it docked all the time if you want to.

Or don't buy one.

No, I think you've misunderstood, you're absolutely right.

I just don't see any need for the controllers sliding off the base unit. I just can't see people wanting to play against each other on a tiny screen with the tiny controllers. It feels over-engineered to me, and something that devs won't really bother supporting.

I suppose what I'm saying is that there are too many connotations for devs to deal with, so they'll revert to base configurations.

Like I say though, maybe people will go mad for it and it'll be a huge hit. I'm just feeling a bit sceptical at the moment.

That's just for local multiplayer outside a living room setting isn't it? I probably wouldn't use that feature but my kids will. For me it was pretty nostalgic seeing that in the Switch reveal video as it reminded me of my Spectrum, in the corner of our living room attached to a little black and white TV and me and my friend playing a game using the keyboard. It's probably, I agree, not that practical but I can see little kids playing that on a train journey.

Yeah, maybe you're right. I'm just being my usual sceptical self with Nintendo.

This all came about from that dude up thread saying it was the first non-gimmicky console for years, where I just disagreed.

I am more excited for this than I have been for a while though, if that means anything.
