The main talent who made Prime are gone though. They went and made Recore, or some of them did, and it shows hugely in the level design and mechanics of that game.

As much as I'd love another 3D Metroid, I'm not sure the ability is still there to make one.

Judging by the quality of Recore, the talent behind Prime didn't work on Recore.

Enjoyed Prime but i never really invested more than 1-2 hours in the two sequels.

I think it honestly will be a totally brand new IP but as i said, i wouldn't be surprised if the team has split into two and one is working on the new title and the other a existing Nintendo IP.

Wouldn't bother with Prime 3.

Why on earth not!? It's not quite as good as Prime granted, but it's still excellent. Sky Town is

The Trilogy is well worth picking up via the Wii U Virtual Console - I'd love an HD remaster on Switch!

The thing about that statement is that it doesn't contradict the possibility of the main tablet unit wirelessly streaming to the dock. The dock would still be providing an output to the TV in such a scenario, which is in line with the statement.

Still, I think it's unlikely they'll do this, given the cost and not managing to sell the concept with Wii U.

I'd think it unlikely more for the lag problem, the only reason it is tolerable on the Wii U GamePad is because Nintendo controlled the entire delivery chain from console to dedicated display device, not the case when you're transmitting to a wide range of TVs with variable processing overhead and input lag.

Prime 3 is basically Zelda in Space™. It's a good game, just not a good Metroid.

I really enjoyed it, made one of the best uses of the Wii-mote (which I mostly didn't enjoy using), seemed quite a bit easier than the previous two, but (IIRC) no difficulty spikes either. But yes, it was rather different as Metroids go. Wasn't as satisfying.

Actually here's a free pro-tip for you Nintendo:

Online leaderboards for all your upcoming Mario games. But knowing you that's probably too much to ask for, fucks!

Yeah, if NSMBU had leaderboards for each stage (coin/time) as well as its Challenge Mode I'm confident it'd be in my top 10 games of all time.

The Mariokart.tv site was great for leader boards but that same functionality should have been available in game. Instead you had to load a list of ghosts and hope your friends' appeared.

Being able to issue wee Driveclub style timed challenges with two or more tracks combined would be great, rather than chasing an all-time TT record.

Metroid is dead. Let it go. Investigate SNES / GBA romhacks if you must. Play AM2R if you haven't already. Nintendo / Retro producing a legit / canonical new entry in the Metroid franchise probably won't happen for the simple reason that the standard set by previous entries is extraordinarily high. Move on.

Erm.... so by that logic, there will never be another canononical Mario game, as that series has mostly hit extraordinary heights in each offering.

What the fuck? Nintendo refusing to make another one because they think they have reached the best it can be, I don't think so.

Ehh what? How is everyone interpreting my posts wrong today?

Do people not want proper friends list, leaderboards, screenshot/video sharing, and pretty much the bare minimum of online features? How great would it be to have the next Mario game include functionality like that so you can compare scores and share funny gifs with yer mates.

It's just that I can see Nintendo still not giving a fuck about all of that which is why I'm not holding my breath.

But Mario Kart 8, Smash, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker had those things. There is also Miiverse as well, which is great for the most part. You can set it up to share progress/screens/scores, as well as logging it all in a journal. Most games have their own unique way of communicating with Miiverse.

Is that all accessed through a single profile page then? Does Mario Kart 8 give you a pop-up if a friend beats one of your times while you're in the game for example?

I don't own a Wii U so genuinely don't know.

Does every other racer do that?

I don't know. Haven't played every other racer. I'm pretty sure one or two do though.  And if they don't all the more reason for Nintendo to add that as it's fun getting pop-ups from your friends saying you're a filthy scrub.

I think so anyway.

I just think that it would be prudent to consider it the case with Metroid.

A true 2D (or Prime) installment probably won't come (for whatever speculative bunch of reasons) and yet everytime there's a heads up on an official Nintendo press event I can practically already hear the moans of a thousand Metroid fans' forsaken souls being crushed. It starts to sound a bit tedious year in and year out, and I say that as a fan myself.

Don't know if every racer does that, but between Burnout Paradise and Driveclub I'd say yes.

Look, it's a given that online and Nintendo only works in the most barebones way possible. Hell, they've finally implemented an online account system that supports a central software library and friends list, and we're still waiting to access it almost two years on! Sure, you can play online, but we could do that with a Dreamcast and Nintendo seems a bit too happy to not progress from the level of those days. Even the Switch reveal focused on local multiplayer, making me very anxious that the entire NNID scheme has been for naught.
