So it's gone from running Android and having a proper OS for the first time to having no OS at all?

Indications are it take 800 megs for the OS. It could well be a custom version of android.

Why though?  Not saying you're wrong particularly but I don't see any fundamental reason why this machine would have a lighter OS than a PS4.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it runs a form of Android or has an Android mode.

The PS4 has about 3 gigs set aside for OS and a lot of that could be to do with share facilities and so on. If nintendo have no such feature then that could eliminate a lot of memory usage. Obviously Nintendo are not going to use 3 gigs for the OS on their machine. The current wiiu OS uses a gig so nintendo are probably targeting something of similar size. A custom Android OS would be fine in this respect (Nvidias shield used android and that had 3 gigs of RAM, one of which was taken up by the OS).

Well the Switch has no optical drive so no need for those.

Yeah, and I applaud the return to carts actually. Discs are good for a lot of cheap storage, but they're noisy, slow and vulnerable.

I primarily see the Switch as replacement for the Wii U.

If it doesn't somehow encompass their handheld business eventually or at least have cross funcionality with 3ds carts, I don't see how it gets around the software development problem where they are spread too thinly between the two platforms.

Some people now are worried because the devkits apparently use nvidia maxwell chips rather than the pascal (newer) family.

I think some people are just adicted to get worried. Although in this case Nintendo really should do their best to make PS4 ports possible and easy.

You want another Nintendo system with no third party support? Surely they'd benefit massively from being somewhat competitive in terms of the number of titles on offer?

I dunno. If they get all those teams making for one system and not two, there will be plenty coming out. How many games do people actually need? I was pretty happy with the Wii U output for 2-3 years.

Hmm. I'm looking forward to a portable Skyrim I must admit, and if the footage they showed of it was reliable it looks like the SE. If so it should be pretty capable and personally I'd love to see the Souls games too, for example.
