I doubt there was anything for him to reveal anyway. Maybe some slight ergonomics impressions? I really hope this talk of no more offical news this year is wrong. It seems insane given that they appear to be sticking to their March release. That is not very far off at all. There's just so much information about the machine that needs to be articulated imo.

He didn't reveal anything not public.   Other than the fact that they weren't really playing games on the system and that was added in post (not a surprise).

That makes me hopeful that the slowdown in Zelda when it was undocked was just some bad video processing in post rather than something that will happen with the real hardware.

Yeah, I think this is Nintendo assuring us that this is a proper console before revealing it's also a functional tablet.

This is my hope - perhaps learning from the Xbone launch that selling a £300 device as a console first and entertainment centre second is important to not alienate the core audience.

I hope the pointer thing is true and there's an app platform designed around both touch and pointer interfaces. The Wii was so close to being an ideal smart TV device, thanks to the Wiimote as its input method, but Nintendo never followed through with it. There's still not a major TV platform designed with pointer controls as a primary input.

It's not hard to imagine watching Netflix on a tablet, put it on TV instantly by docking, and start navigating the app using pointer controls.

Some of that video included swearing which wasn't beeped out which GameXplain may not be keen on.

Also he shouldn't really have done that interview...but I don't think he revealed anything we didn't know.

Well, I didn't know they used wood with duct tape on for one scene. ;) But yeah, he didn't say anything about the console that wasn't already known, other than there still being things to be revealed. According to someone on reddit he asked for the video to be removed because he was getting too much attention, which seems like an odd move for someone who's living relies on getting attention.

Jim Sterling thinks that Nintendo are trying to avoid the marketing mistakes that they made with the WiiU with this reveal video.  They want to make it crystal clear that this is a new, fully fledged Home Console that can go portable when needed, before clarifying whether its also anything else such as Touchscreen/Sensor Bar/Virtual Console/Etc.

I think some people need to remember that a video gamer website perhaps isn't the key demographic for Nintendo at this moment.

If they released a video with mainly men sitting in dark rooms eating pizza and some time lapse video showing them playing Mario MMORPG for 3 days solid, it wouldn't appeal to the mass market.  At this point, they are just sticking their heads above water and saying, look we've got this thing coming out next year.

It won't be a marketing disaster if they don't announce more details prior to Christmas because:

Most gamers will probably buy it anyway, unless they just aren't Nintendo's kind of gamers, in which case, they will post jokes here and continue to not understand why so many of us are excited about some new ways to play Mario 45, Zelda 32 and the long, long lists of other franchises we want them to resurrect such as F-Zero, 1080, Waverace, Switch (Advanced) Wars etc.

Still, keep the rumours coming, they are pretty entertaining, especially ones that involve players having to stand on their heads to use other technology that can't mimic a touch screen, to mimic a touch screen.  My signature came from a post in the Wii equivalent thread on here 10+ years back I guess ;)

While perhaps not a 'disaster' I think it would be a huge missed opportunity to not project the new console in as good a light as possible. Also, expecting 'gamers' to just buy the thing is a massive assumption to make. Gone are the days I feel, where gamers would just wander out and slap down a lot of money on the next shiny Nintendo console.

Imo Nintendo should be courting as much publicity as possible while they're in this honeymoon period. Fine, piece meal the infomation out but at least get it out in good time. I'd especially like to see them target the drivers of the market, hinted at in the video, the on/off casual gaming segment. That segment drags in others due to the media's infatuation with that lifestyle and age segment.

The reveal trailer was basically a vision piece, much like the original Project Natal video showing people using it in idealised hypothetical situations, it's there to set the tone for what to expect of the final product, Nintendo UK have even warned that you should not take the gameplay shown in it as factual:

Quote

Eurogamer contacted Nintendo regarding the trailer's production and asked how it was all put together.

"This video is all about explaining how the Nintendo Switch works," a UK spokesperson said. "We wanted to convey in a self-contained video how Nintendo Switch represents a new era for video game systems enjoyed in front of a TV, by letting gamers play anywhere, anytime, with anyone they choose. It adds the mobility of a portable system to the power of a home gaming system.

"At a later date, before the March launch, we'll be talking about things like exact launch date, and of course, the games. You shouldn't assume what you saw on the video represents actual game footage and further specifics on first-party games will be provided later."

I can't WAIT to see how the 'play with anyone they choose' selling point will end up as another awkward exercise in trading 16 digits friend codes or bullshit like that.

That isn't how the Wii U worked at all. That's how the Wii worked and the DS. The Wii U used a fairly similar system to both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The Wii U system was fine, intuitive and had Miiverse too that was quite good fun. I mean, it still does as it's still in use.

I played Pikmin 3 earlier on mine :)

I don't understand Pikmin 3 at all. I feel really sorry for the Pikmin - what exactly do they get out of the relationship other than slavery and death :(
