3-4 hours is about the norm for a tablet if you're pushing the gpu.

I guess . I'm used to my iPhone 6+ and iPad Mini 2 to last for hours and hours, but that's mainly to browse internet and stuff like that.

3-4 probably isn't that bad if it's stretched to full capacity, but I'm pretty sure the Vita and New 3DS do better than that(?)

3 hours!? That would be completely unacceptable for a handheld surely.

You try playing a very graphics heavy game on your Android/iPad. Battery will die in a few hours on that too.

I get about 6 or 7 hours on my Vita. Remember though, low powered, low heat GPUS on those, the switch clearly has a fan vent which would lead me to believe they are pushing the GPU if they need some active cooling.

The vent/fan might only be used when it's docked? It might switch (!) to a low power mode and passive cooling as a handheld.

I understand it's not even sure if the Switch will have a touchscreen?

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that it has one. Pretty sure i read a 3rd party had mentioned it would have a touch screen but that it wouldn't be 100% required unless it was built around it?

It'll be interesting to see how it will reflect in game design as well. There has usually been a bit of a difference between mobile games (easy to pick up, can be played well in short bursts, etc.) and 'home games' (less arcade-y, demanding longer sessions, more story-heavy). Then again, playing stuff like the N64 Zelda's, Monster Hunter or Persona on the go has blurred that line considerably.

Yeah, I hope we don't have to live with a couple of years of PSvita 'lets shoehorn a full console game in' launch titles before devs remember what was good about handheld games in the first place.

I think it will have a touchscreen. Get ready to quote this back at me as you point and laugh later but I also think the screen will have the New 3DS' head-tracking 3D effect. I see the new platform as being the culmination of all their developments to date, complete with waggle, touch and 3D. None are essential but all are available for any games that want to use them.

I don't think that's a good idea, they have a pretty simple selling point of "play anywhere" and focusing on that is probably better than being a Nintendo device Katamari.

Like the four different control modes (combined joycons, single joycon in landscape mode, pro controller, touchscreen) is already pretty complicated and bringing back memories of the Wii U's loads of controllers.

Well, nvidia did say they've made a custom graphics API for it. What do the other tegra devices run on?

OpenGL ES is the Android graphics API of choice, Vulkan being the DX12/Metal equivalent but none of Nvidia's current devices use it.

And it'd be about four seconds before the software was ripped to shreds on XDA-devs.

It wouldn't matter even if Nintendo chose to base their OS on an existing opensource solution. The PS4 runs on a variant of FreeBSD, yet only one group of hackers has publically shown how easy it was to hack the PS4, which hasn't resulted in anything since they demoed their complete mastery of it nearly a year ago by installing Linux (which ironically was the hard part as the PS4 isn't a standard PC). They even bragged about how Swiss-Cheese like choosing opensource software was in terms of known attack vectors, no need to even resort to hardware-based attacks on the security. Considering the gap between when fail0verflow mentioned they had done the Wii U (at launch) and when somebody else managed it, seems it takes everyone else years to work it out.

My son saw a YouTube video of SMS today so he asked me if he could play the game... he's 9. He's no idea what a gamecube is. I goes down to the garage and pulls out my old gamecube stuff and hook it up; 4 hours later, I've played SMS, Fzero GX, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Rogue Squadron and Viewtiful Joe.

I'm getting a gamecube attitude approach to games vibe with the Switch..:

and I can't wait

You didn't play a battle game of super monkey ball?

Get out.

ha! True story! Guy in work knows I'm a Nintendo loving manchild... He saw this 'switch thing' on the internet over the weekend.

"I haven't played a game like Mario/Zelda etc in years and years as I just don't have the time to sit and play them, so being able to on the train is a game changer"

That's ONE!  30000000000000 MORE TO GO.

Well, I'm fucking getting one. Personally I really like the idea of playing a game on the TV and then grabbing the tablet like screen from it and continue on the road (at the inlaws). I also take the promised list of third party publishers supporting the system with a huge grain of salt, fully expecting every single one of them to have bailed ship by the end of the first year.

Sega will be there after everyone else has bailed, continuing to make shit Sonic games.

Yeah there is even that dodgy rip off version of the nx that has a 3d screen.

However, i don't think the switch will support 3d. Why? Because generally it uses more CPU power and the resolution isn't as good.

As much as i have enjoyed 3d on my 3ds i am more than happy if they drop it and we get better visuals.
