I do hope as with most Nintendo stuff, you can replace the battery on it. Gawd knows how the original battery might perform after a couple of years use.

But without 3rd party support it won't sell well. The Wii U showed that. They need to invest some cash, get some big exclusives and sell it as a console like the others. The days of the Wii are long gone, the market abandoned it so they need to appeal to the current market on PS4 and Xbox One.

Can you imagine if they get Fifa 18 and get kids/students playing against each other at school and college with the option of going home and continuing online via an Xbox Live quality service.

 

That would be huge.  I hope Nintendo are savvy enough to realise the potential there.

I seriously doubt it. Unless things have changed recently, I don't think Android has a particularly good low overhead graphics API which makes it a bad fit for trying to get the most out of the hardware.

They run on Android, which I think has let it down on occasion.

 

I can't see Nintendo going for it. If they do it'll be so heavily modified as to be unrecognisable.

I won't miss the Wii U, but I'm kind of fond of the 3DS with its 3D screen and compact form factor. The Switch isn't going to be smuggled in my pocket when I go to the loo at work.

Nintendo have said its not a replacement for 3DS. But it would definitely be the end of Wii U, isn't it finished already anyway?

You've got to think that's the plan. I'm imagining a mini switch one or two years into launch. Possibly with no dock. I reckon this is their attempt to go iPad/mini/Pro. All the same system, just different form factors

It'll be interesting to see how it will reflect in game design as well. There has usually been a bit of a difference between mobile games (easy to pick up, can be played well in short bursts, etc.) and 'home games' (less arcade-y, demanding longer sessions, more story-heavy). Then again, playing stuff like the N64 Zelda's, Monster Hunter or Persona on the go has blurred that line considerably.

The Gamepad was lucky to get 4-5 hours, this thing has a lot more oomph and Nitnendo aren't one for putting good long lasting batteries in products.

It can have just 1 hour battery life as long as I can plug my power bank into it via. USB.

Having the joycons using their own batteries should give the main unit a bit more lasting power too.
