Nintendo Switch

With this system Nintendo gets a lot of flexibility, in the future as hardware gets more efficient... They could improve screen resolution to match console performance, they could ditch the 30fps lock I totally expect on the go.

They could release a mini 4" version that actually becomes a handheld device.

They could release a console only version

They could licence the hardware to be embedded into smart tvs.

This Switch is more like a foundation platform, it gives so many choices. It is funny that the switch was built on the ashes of the Wii U because the Wii U was a dead end, the switch is more like a new beginning.

Piss the loading times off by going back onto carts, and they're onto something. Having just got into fallout 4 on the PS4, the open door, get in a lift, wait for scenario to load/unfold is an absolute bore.

Yeah because there's no loading on the 3DS is there.

One thing we won't get is local multiplayer on two screens (gamepad and TV) and that's a shame. You won't be playing Mario Chase or Splatoon Dojo Battle on this console. Unless you buy two or three or four of these consoles. For me, the Wii U didn't make use of this feature enough. In that respect, it's a step down. Unless II, they release a second handheld screen that can connect to the main handheld screen a la the DS local multiplayer system. Unless III they just abandon that as an option and that'll be a damn shame. The local multiplayer with multiple DS' is one of the best features for social, local gaming and Nintendo have been pushing that theme for so many years.

I don't think the Switch will mean a reduction in loading times, it's not the N64 era.

Nowadays PS4 and Xbox pull everything from HDD or SSD rather than the disc, disc drives are a lot faster anyway, and Nintendo are using SD cards which have really low internal bandwidth and I/O speeds. They're going to cards because moving parts like HDDs or Disc Drives are unsuitable for something you're carting about everywhere, and they're cheap, not because they're better for performance.

Where are people going to put this?  It's not going to fit in my TV unit and I don't have space next to the TV plus that would look ugly.  I doubt you can lay it flat as that wouldn't really work with connecting the Joycons.  I really like the look of it and kids are both blown away but now I'm starting to think about some of the practicalities!

If the dock will take a standard hdmi cable, ill buy a 5 metre one then it can go on the small table/drawers next to my sofa.

I already have a headphone extender cable for the tv sitting flush with the skirting boards it can sit alongside then the console is at arms length for going portable.

This will be a loss; great for the Lego games on WiiU. I did wonder if the dock would allow TV display even when the console itself is not installed, but some of the semi-official comments on the capabilities of the dock suggests it's unlikely.

Acc. to one rumour, the Switch will not replace both the WiiU and the 3DS.

A successor to the 3DS is apparently still planned as well.

Apparently, Switch is intended to be a home console successor (Wii U). Nintendo’s home and handheld systems are still separate, with a 3DS successor coming at some point in the future.

Don't really believe it tbh. There's been talks about Nintendo merging their full console and handheld business for ages, and I think the Switch is the result of those plans.

I'd still expect a purely handheld successor to come out. Switch is too big, costly and unwieldy to be a proper kids replacement for the DS. What I do expect though I'd that the 3DS successor will either be able to play switch games or that it will be designed so that Switch games can be easily ported over. I do believe Nintendo can't continue to produce enough games for two separate systems.

There is this, but are the coffers not stuffed from people running around chasing pokemon on their phones?

They trotted out this "Third Pillar" nonsense when they replaced the gameboy with the DS.

It's just a safety net excuse in case it falls flat on it's face because people don't want to spend £300 (or however much it ends up being) on a piece of kit to keep their kids quiet with some cheap shovelware.

I think one of the main reasons Nintendo is going for this dual approach is to have only a single platform to develop for. Nintendo are always getting hammered for not having enough games on their home system but I would imagine if you combine the the numbers of games they put out for both home and portable it's probably a respectable number.

They have been working towards this for a while now by having versions of the same game on both WiiU and 3ds along with combining their home and mobile studios together back in 2013. I think this is something they've wanted to do for a while but technology and cost restraints prohibited it.

If you are Nintendo this simply makes sense.
