I don't think the dock will hold anything extra to boost performance - maybe a hardware scaler to take the image from 720p to 1080p?

The dock will simply be able to run the chipset at full power, so 1080p will be possible. Away from the dock they'll have to under clock it to get reasonable battery life.

The same as how laptops perform better when you plug them into the mains.

Famitsu asked Nintendo about several issues regarding NS. Here is the summary of the article. As my Japanese is crappy, please tell me if there are any mistakes.

- NS is not the successor of Wii U
- NS is not backward compatible with Wii U and 3DS
- NS will be packaged with Joy-Con(L) and Joy-Con(R)
- The packaging of other accessories (like the dock) will be announced separately for different regions before launch
- Cartridge is called "Game Card" internally
- Specifications of cartridge will be announced before launch
- Battery life will be announced later. The development team aims at allowing players to play NS conveniently at places without electricity connection.
- At this moment, no information on compatibility of smartphone apps can be provided

Potentially being sold in a Standard & Premium version then, like the Wii-U was but with one having just the console & controllers, then one with the dock as well.

thats how I imagine it as well. Chips underclocked when on the move as outputting 720p to screen then plugged into mains it runs full fat and outputs 1080p to tv

No. The dock mention there was added by the translator, and not part of the article.

Nintendo confirmed to the WSJ that it's sold with the dock.

Can't it just Stream to the TV? I don't quite see why we need the dock.

Lag. Lower quality video. Having a powercable hanging over your lap to keep the tablet charged in long play sessions.

How would I stream to my non-smart TV?

If the dock is only to charge the handheld part, (a pass through for a mains transformer) and to allow a connection to HDMI....

I have to ask, is there really a need for the dock at all then? The Vita is an example for this without a docking station.

I get that they probably do not want a hdmi socket on their super-sleek design, but it could have had a smaller socket and a convertor cable like my Microsoft Surface.

I think the dock has a big fan in it so the device can run at a higher clock speed and generate 1080p visuals instead of 720p.

Fair point on the potential lower video quality BUT then why can't they just use the same tech the wii u did? That was perfect.

Could have included a HDMI dongle.

I don't get the point of moaning that people won't buy the hardware to shoot down their opinion, like isn't "people who don't already buy Nintendo" the audience they're supposed to be reaching? Aren't they doing really badly just with their superfans?

Despite the advert I feel this is squarely aimed at kids who spend all their time on tablets. I'm wondering if they'll flood it with social apps and a browser to make it a viable alternative for them.

So I would still have to have something plugged into my TV, with a power outlet sincy my TV HDMI doesn't kick out enough power for dongles, and I'd need a seperate power adapter for the tablet.

Just seems a bit of an arse around way of doing things.

I definitely get the impression "mobile" something is going to be the surprise they haven't unveiled. There were too many rumours of it running Android and the whole reason for them to use a mobile chipset in the first place to get ports. Something to keep out of the early advertising because it's casual focused and thus "gamers" hate it.

Also, the dock gives an impression of it being a home console.

If it were just a tablet with a streaming option some people would just dismiss it as a handheld and not be interested. The dock gives it more legitimacy. (And IMO, through cooling and power will allow the chips to run at full speed.)

What battery life would people be happy with?

I'm thinking around 4-5 hours. 3-4 hours would be 'okay'. 2-3 hours would be 'disappointing.'

Wii U's screen is 480p and the range on the thing is very variable. Nothing will be more reliable than a hardwired connection.

Anything. I'll be blasting it on maximum settings/brightness just like I do the 3DS. I don't worry about battery life as I usually always have a 20,000mAH battery pack in my bag. Sure it's bulky, but it's always in my bag anyway when I go out for the day just in case I need it for my phone.

It's not like this thing will be going in your pockets anyway.

So it has games on Gamecards, but it'll have some kind of internal memory for eShop downloads right?  Maybe it'll be the Wii U Premium all over again.  A selection of VC & few full games & that's your lot.

The other thing is that if it really isn't a touchscreen because of being sat in the dock, that means no Mario Maker, unless it is & you can only play games like that in Portable Mode.
