Nintendo Switch

It will only be confusing if Nintendo don't market it properly. If that report is true then I'm more positive about Nintendo being able to provide a positive (reasonable) price point. $199 for the Tablet and pads, say another $50 for the dock sold seperately? That would be perfect imo.

It might well be primarily marketed as a home console to begin with, with the 3DS of course still existing and doing quite well. I'm assuming that a couple of years into this console's lifespan though, they will move on from it. A smaller, cheaper handheld-only model of the switch, maybe without the fan vents or the removable controllers, would be an appropriate replacement. There's also nothing stopping them from producing a console-only model without a screen. They've given themselves tons of flexibility.

That's not a bad idea.

As long as they don't make a touch screen nessecary could we see the following:

At Launch - Console/Handheld Hybrid with Screen.

Thereafter:

Cheaper standalone console which plugs into TV and comes with Pro controller and no screen.

Standalone Handheld with screen.

Both of the latter would be cheaper to make and produce, specifically the standalone console.  It just depends if the screen is touchscreen and if the games need that to work.

I wonder how much better the Wii U would have done with a different name and no touch screen and produced at a lower price.

Bit disappointing for me, as it leaves room for confusion to your average consumer, fair enough selling the pro controller separate, but give the Dock and the Switch in a package with the Joy-Cons and the Joy Con adapter thing.

I think it makes sense for you though. Get 1 dock for the tv, two machines (one for you, one for you daughter) and a couple of sets of the Joy-Cons.

Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

The Nintendo Switch home gaming system will "absolutely" support amiibo for compatible Nintendo Switch games, Nintendo has confirmed to IGN.

"If a Nintendo Switch game supports amiibo then the Nintendo Switch home gaming system will as well," a Nintendo representative told IGN.

'Can I buy the new Nintendo home console for little Billy please, Mr Game?'

'Sure. First up you need to buy this handheld for £200.'

'But I didn't ask for a handheld.'

'Well, you need it. Then you have to buy this dock for £100 to be able to play it on your TV.'

'Oh, and he'll probably be wanting this controller. Yours for an extra £50.'

'But he doesn't want a handheld.'

'How much are the PS4 and Xbox One again?'

This is Game we're talking about. Their actual response will be "Sure. Buy this mandatory bundle for £400 containing the dock, a second pad and two games you don't want. Obviously you'll be wanting our insurance package too."

Or it'll be sold in a bundle for one price. That may be expensive but it'll still be one price.

The fact they're having removable controllers and a home dock means the games cant rely on touch screens, so thats one good thing to come out of the Wii U's horrendous sales performance.

The fact the dock is just providing a charging point and video output should mean they can sell it a lot cheaper, £50 would be good. There isn't much going on with the dock, its just a neat way of connecting it to your telly. That how I read it anyway.

It'll probably have Call of Duty, they love putting those everywhere, even where there's not a huge audience for them (like PC).

Black Ops 3 has 1.3m copies registered on Steam. That's a much bigger audience than it's likely to have on a Nintendo platform.

If the dock is only to charge the handheld part, (a pass through for a mains transformer) and to allow a connection to HDMI....

I have to ask, is there really a need for the dock at all then? The Vita is an example for this without a docking station.

I get that they probably do not want a hdmi socket on their super-sleek design, but it could have had a smaller socket and a convertor cable like my Microsoft Surface.

I still think they cocked up by revealing the new console with footage of Skyrim (even moreso when Bethesda refuse to even commit to Skyrim coming to the Switch), but I feel a lot more excited about the Switch today than I did yesterday. The thought of Nintendo focusing their efforts on one console instead of splitting them over two is pretty damn exciting as it has so much potential. No more videos of five year old games though please.

Famitsu asked Nintendo about several issues regarding NS. Here is the summary of the article. As my Japanese is crappy, please tell me if there are any mistakes.

- NS is not the successor of Wii U
- NS is not backward compatible with Wii U and 3DS
- NS will be packaged with Joy-Con(L) and Joy-Con(R)
- The packaging of other accessories (like the dock) will be announced separately for different regions before launch
- Cartridge is called "Game Card" internally
- Specifications of cartridge will be announced before launch
- Battery life will be announced later. The development team aims at allowing players to play NS conveniently at places without electricity connection.
- At this moment, no information on compatibility of smartphone apps can be provided

That sounds like the dock is sold separately from the tablet, maybe a cheaper bundle and then a more expensive one with a dock?

Before everyone runs with the mistranslation above that the dock is a separate purchase. Whoever translated it added the 'like the dock' themselves.

They still haven't said this is replacing their handheld line or that a 3DS successor will share software. The DS clamshell and smaller size is still the more viable portable format.

God, I really hope it does replace the 3DS. Surely they can't still release exclusives to the 3DS when the Switch is out?

Still,  the issue is the switch is just not kid friendly. 3ds is and I think they are going to have difficulty selling the switch to that market.

Saying that a lot of kids use tablets but they can be bought for peanuts now ( well unless ipad)  .

The dock is just as I thought.. dumb. I'm sure third party will release their own versions.

Despite what Nintendo says this is a handheld console with the ability to play on a home TV.

Can't it just Stream to the TV? I don't quite see why we need the dock.

Specs don't really fuss me nowadays. just have great games and I'll be happy.

The dock gives it a power boost to display at 1080, or so I read. So it's more than just plastic.

Nope, top of the page:

I don't know how the Vita does it.
