I really question that Nintendo are still going to make the march 2017 release date.

They'll just do a Wii and only have a handful ready on release and then trickle feed them resulting in it being a sellout success.

That "confirmed" set of games, "confirmed" specs, and "confirmed" region lock status?

So not region free.

Thinking about this some more, why didn't they just develop a handheld and a home console which both run on the same tech (beefed up for the home console) and both use the same media? Surely they're appealing only to a very specific audience with this jack-of-all-trades route. It it was launched as 2 consoles, those who want handheld only can buy that, those who want big screen only can buy that, and those who want both buy both.

As it is, I think they're probably going to alienate a lot of people by forcing things on them that they don't want. Personally I've got no interest in handheld gaming, so I won't be paying for a machine that has a defunct screen and lower specs, just so they could make an all-in-one. I'm sure there are people out there who'd just rather it be a handheld as well, without having to pay for the dock.

If you are the kind of gamer who'll benefit from both, then great. It looks brilliant for that. But I think they've narrowed their target audience, rather than trying to expand it. I guess only time will tell now if it's the right move.

Yeah, 2 versions would have better and if you went digital the game would run on both.

"Who else but diehard Nintendo fans will buy the Switch?” he said.

I think this is key. It is a Nintendo machine for Nintendo gamers; no a Nintendo machine for all, like Wii was. And there aren't as many committed Nintendo fans as there once was.

I'd like to know more about the Joycon controllers. For instance do they do waggle making Wii ports a possibility.

I think if that were the case it would have definitely been in the video. My feeling is it wont be waggle because that would not work in many situations on the move; and given the concept of the console is a seamless experiecne between home and mobile, its just not practical.

Didn't Nintendo announce a while ago that they were releasing the portable "version*" a few months before the home "version"? I'm sure I read that somewhere, although it could have been baseless speculation or made up rubbish of course.

They haven't said any such thing as far as I know.

It's bullshit to talk about handhelds and home consoles. And guess that's the point of this thing. I DON'T PLAY HANDHELDS!  What, even ones that plays literally the same game as you were playing on your telly? Why wouldn't you play that? Are you that scared of mobility? It makes no sense.

Basically they've slotted out the interactive screen from my Wii U controller and hidden it in some plastic docking machine underneath my tele. Cheers Nintendo.

Mine will be docked 99% of the time. What they are doing is giving me an overpriced traditional console with traditional console controls. Yep you can play with detached Wii like controls, but I'd imagine that games will primarily be developed with traditional controls in mind so they'll work when in hand console mode. They'll probably be the same amount of motion control gaming we've seen on the Wii U,  I'll be getting more waggle from my PS4's VR than I will from this.

Obviously having all Nintendo developers making games for this thing is massive though. I fucking love that part. But it's a big boooooooo for the console they've come up with from me.

Sure, if you're housebound, which from your post I assume you are, then this probably is not going to deliver much above Nintendo games and possibly decent third party support.

Why would I want to play it on a tiny screen in lower resolution when I've got a 55" 4K TV on my wall?

Lots of the enthusiasts in this thread skipped the Wii U. They don't yet realise the portable screen is redundant.

Quite a lot of us have found numerous uses for the Wii U screen and love it. It's very useful if you live with other people.

Some people sometimes leave the vicinity of their TV, or live with other people who might use it.

Some people do, yeah, but I've got no need for it. I don't play games outside of the house and I don't have a Mrs who doesn't let me use the TV for gaming.

We all have portable games with us everywhere we go on our phones nowadays. How much do you play those?

Now how much would you play them if they weren't so convenient and involved a big ten inch tablet that you have to go out of your way to pack and carry with you?

It's something that might be good for people really into gaming on the go, but then they're also likely to be pretty happy with their phones for that already.

It’s possibly already been mentioned within this thread but I don’t have time to read through so many posts.

Nintendo are coming across as utter arseholes in my opinion from reading the Eurogamer article about refusing to acknowledge the touch screen.

Why the hell not? What’s the point? It’s not like it’s going to make any difference to their competition.

Also it’s clear that Nintendo has given Bethesda and 2K the same bullshit statement to communicate about upcoming titles.

They show a promo video with games then refuse to acknowledge whether they will be released! Bonkers.

I skipped the WiiU - I think playing it at a friend's put me off. It seemed overpriced and underpowered and took ages to do anything. Hopefully cartridge-based games on the Switch will help with loading speeds and the hardware will be more capable all round.

Given the #NX at the end, this probably doesn't mean what everyone wants it to mean.

Don't read anything into that #NX tag at all - Image & Form have confirmed that they are developing for the Switch, but they had no idea on the final name until now. They've been calling it the NX while developing for it.

Thats fair, but acting like they're narrowing their market by catering to people who have jobs and girlfriends is a bit weird. The Wii U screen was what sold it to me and most of the people I know, it's incredibly useful for anyone with kids, or who can't afford multiple TVs, or who ever travels.

I live with someone else and it wasn't worth the bother of

- using a quickly outdated and poor display

- dealing with battery life

- being anti-social with the person I live with.

It was less convenient than just using a handheld console and 99% of the time I ended up just watching whatever show my partner was watching whilst browsing the net on my phone, then played MK8 when they'd gone.

If it bothers people that much just set up separate TV and gaming rooms.

The Wii U display is perfect for the games it runs, nothing about it is poor or outdated unless you're spending thousands of pounds on new iPads so you can have a 4K screen to never play games on.

The Wii U controller is anti social but a handheld isn't? You just ended up watching TV and going on your phone? Just set up a different gaming room?!

Adise from the ridiculous "just have more rooms and thousands of pounds to spare", literally all your points are "I don't like the Wii U". That's fine, but don't pretend it's objective criticism when you just don't like it.

I kind of expected it would be a touchscreen. It would be a bit odd were it not. Certainly from a backwards compatability viewpoint but also from a simple user perspective. It's just a very intuitive way to interact with a screen/menus and tbh people expect it now, especially kids.

I'm not so sure on the touchscreen - I mean in many ways it makes sense - people expect it, Splatoon on Wii U makes great use of it.....but then, in the Splatoon section of the Switch reveal they don't show it at all....

I'm really interested how they will handle jumping in Splatoon without a touchscreen. Being honest, I'm just really interested in more Splatoon full stop. It's so bloody incredible.
