Nintendo Switch

Not sold on the lack of a proper d-pad on the left joy-con. Don't really want to buy a seperate controller just for that. Other than that, pretty tight. Mario and Zelda potentially (Mario defo getting delayed) at launch is great. Cartridges is cool as well!

Odd press release where they say Switch is not the end of the 3DS, and is a "home gaming system first and foremost", which implies it's not doing the "all Nintendo games on a single platform" just yet. Maybe why there's so many Wii U re-releases?

“Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost,” the company told Polygon when asked if the system was going to impact the sale of the 3DS portable systems. “We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.

“Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline.”

While the answer seems to be Nintendo equivocating a bit in terms of the lifespan of the 3DS, it’s pretty easy to interpret the plans for the Wii U.

“We have nothing to announce about the production status of Wii U,” Nintendo said in response to our request. “We announced in April 2016 that as we prepare for the launch of Nintendo Switch in March of 2017, Nintendo will ship 800,000 Wii U hardware units to the global market for this fiscal year. As a result, the inventory of Wii U hardware at retail will become harder to find.

“We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability."

They just don't want 3DS sales being hit this Christmas.

We heard similar stuff from Nintendo before. It's the "third pillar" strategy that they've been publicly fond of in the past before sweeping the old device under the carpet. With them still being reliant on 3DS and Wii U (cough) sales until next year, they're not going to openly throw either under the bus just yet.

Switch won't officially replace the 3DS until it does.

This is all going to depend on its battery life. If its comparable to current systems it will suck up a lot of juice and will they stick in a crap low end battery like the Wii U Gamepad. It's also pretty slim so there's not a lot of room for expanding into say a 3rd party one. Which will effect the portability.

It's going to be solar powered obviously. Or the battery will be so massive and hot, the case will need to made from some form of ceramic so it melts your hands.

The Wii U pad isn't that terrible but this one will be a lot more than just being a screen so yes, battery life will probably kill it.

The main issue with the Wii U pad in our house was there was just one of them - this could possibly see additional screens as an additional peripheral. They obviously link together by bluetooth (?) so that's got to be possible.

What's the betting that Pro controller is separate?

Of course it will. Not many consoles come with two controllers. I've never bought one with two included - other than the Wii U come to think of it, it had a Wiimote and a pad.

'Big Mouth' Emily Rogers is saying that the battery life isn't too good currently. Which will be a real shame. Nintendo really should have concentrated on that aspect given how poor the 3ds's battery is. I guess we'll know more soon, hopefully before the end of the year. Nintendo have a huge amount of info to drip feed now. I hope they organise it as well as that video.

According to Nvidia, the console will use a custom Tegra chip.  The same Tegra capable of running DOOM at 1080p 60fps.  So it may be possible that this console is on par with at least XB1/PS4.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the chip that runs Doom 3 at 1080p60?
