Apart from the dog walker, have a think who this was marketed at:

Jet setters

Campervan hipsters

Basketball players

Girls that live in a penthouse and have rooftop parties

Competitive eSports athletes.

It's not for us.

Did you see Sonys launch video for the PS4? It was this times a trillion.

Who the fuck are they going for though??

Kids?? They won;t be getting bought this... it would last 20 mins with my kids before the screen gets smashed...

Young adults? They'll be happy with their bones/ps4's/iphone 7's...

Grown adults old enough to know better. Or: grown adults too old to care about image anymore. If you're reading this post thinking "me?" - yes, you.

Do we have anything closer on the controller - what's that square button under the 'd-pad' buttons? It has some kind of symbol on it. Is that the rumored 'Share' button?

Also, where's the flap?

The main unit reminds me of a toaster and the pad is the same shape as a slice of toast.

Not getting the dread I felt during the Wii U reveal, but not sure this is going to do much to restore nintendo in the eyes of gamers.
It looks sleek and fun and the concept of switching from one form to another is done really well. The problem is no one is really crying out for this kind of functionality - only nintendo are - because they can't supply both a handheld and a home console with seperate software. So this solves a manufacturer's problem not a consumer one. It will sell to the same nintendo fans, canibalise sales that would have traditionally been spread across two seperate devices, and that's err it.

I'll get one, because zelda, and that new mario game looked very like mario 64. But I'm the converted, and Nintendo needed something which could reach outside that. Based on that video, they haven't.

It could mean double the software and double the polish, it's equally a consumer benefit. We'll see.

The one on the right is the Home button. The one on the left could be for power or share. Personally I think power.

Ah, of course, power - makes total sense with the shape and everything.

Share button must be under the flap.

I do have one concern about this: flimsiness. I hope those controllers grip the sides of the screen like limpets, because otherwise I can see a lot of them being broken off by kids/intense gamers/intense gamer kids. And that stand looks a bit weedy too.

Other than that, though, I'm completely sold. Having made a rod for my own back by brainwashing all my kids to be gamers, and Nintendo gamers especially, next year's going to be pretty expensive!

THat's not difficult when the number of quality game is less than 25. I love my Wii U and think this will be an equally great bit of design, ad the remote play aspect is something I use a lot.

But my god the lack of software support is so frustrating. Not least from Nintendo themselves. And it's been going on years and years and years.

I will definitely pick up a switch, but no way am I going anywhere near it until 2 years after launch and the number of quality games is in double digits.

Less than 25 for Wii U and 3DS combined? Nintendo output a lot this gen on both. Now imagine it all on one.

Not saying it'll happen though, and if this is the new handheld I'm pretty upset at the absence of stylus or touch screen shown already. Or something that would easily fit in a kids pocket or not break if it falls and so on.

Probably not the question on everyone's mind, but I really want to know which version of Dragon Quest XI the Switch is going to get. We know it's releasing on the platform, but we don't know if it's going to be the same version as the 3DS:

or the PS4:

I'm not sure which I'd prefer, either. I love the look of both.

It spams ' please understand ' when playing online

Decent D-pad seems to be a Pro controller feature. Odd they didn't put it on the standard ones.

This is because of the multiplayer using the two pad parts feature. This way they work as buttons when someone is holding it sideways. Quite clever really. Anyone who cares enough for the proper D-Pad would be buying the Pro anyway.

Question!

Aside from the obvious visual difference are the two version pretty much the same then in terms of quests, gameplay mechanics and story?

I wish I knew! We know it's the same story, but beyond that it's not clear. They're both turn-based RPGs, so easy to imagine that the combat will be much the same.

They've been very quiet about the game, given that it's supposed to be releasing in Japan next year.

Reading various posts along the lines of 'Nintendo have made a console that I can play on the telly then play on a small screen when the wife/mother/my nurse comes home. Genius!' Made me think I'd fallen through a time warp for a minute there. I was all ready to rush out of the house and warn people about Brexit and Trump.

With the Wii U, Nintendo made a console that you could play on the telly then play on a small screen when the wife/mother/nurse comes home, as long as you were within about 10 feet of the console unit itself.

And one of the main reasons I went for a PS4 in the whole 2013 console wars was to use remote play on the Vita. What a load of shit that turned out to be.

This solves all of that.

Genius name too - explains exactly what it does in a single word.
