I figure they'll be doing a lot of careful work in the coming months to choose a price and just how much to bundle. If they wanted to be really aggressive I'm sure they could take out the dock and the controller "frame" and sell a version of it that's just a handheld to set the minimum cost of entry as low as possible.

Looking at the size of the game cartridges in the trailer, I wonder if 3DS games will be backwards compatible?  The screen should be massive enough to render both 3DS screens, and they've said in the past it has touch capabilities.

Seems likely they might throw this in, considering it won't be backwards compatible with the Wii U as there appears to be no disk slot, and only two catridge slots directly on the console base.

We don't know the price.    We do know that Nintendo said Wii U was too expensive and wanted to address that next time out.

I just can't see how they can get basically PS4/Xbox performance on a handheld with that size screen, separate controllers etc and it be cheap.

If it's got a Nvidia X2 (it must, right?) then that's gonna cost.

I will be there day one though. Love the look of it and the portable aspect really appeals, but not having to be tethered to the base unit like with Wii U.

Also those mini remotes are ace. They are waggle style remotes aren't they?

Probably by not giving you PS4/Xbox performance. There's a reason they showed Skyrim and not, say, Fallout 4.

I wonder how much buttering up it took for Namco to be alright with a Nintendo Blah-Con.

As someone who didn't buy the Wii U on release, I am absolutely 100% in for the this, and it's everything I'd hoped for. Playing the new Zelda game on my big screen, then later on in bed, then in work on my lunch break? I'm all over that.

Indeed. I'd mainly be buying as a handheld/3DS replacement, so I think I'd be unwilling to spend over £200.

Says who?

It's in the video isn't it?

If it's not more powerful than a Wii U then you have to question what Wii U customers are going to get out of this if they're not particularly interested in the portability.

I suspect the screenless version will be announced for next Christmas though.

Another little benefit - this embraces the whole 'off-tv' play thing again. Playing games and the wife/kids come home? Just pop it out of the dock and carry on. Need a shit while a 45 min Platinum cutscene plays? Just pop it out of the dock and relax on the throne.

In my household, and I admit it's not the same for everyone, being able to play while not interrupting 'Sam & Cat' or 'Henry Danger' is a big plus!

I think it's safe to assume it's the upcoming Special Edition. It wouldn't look very good for them if it was like "Oh yeah, this is just the um, normal edition...for reasons. Our console is great, really! Please...come back!!"

Nope, nothing's actually named in the video.

There's a big gap between the WiiU and current gen that the Switch can land in.

Back at the Wii U launch I admit I was a big detractor of this feature, but in that time I've had a kid, and yes, I can definitely see the appeal now. It'll be nice to have it properly portable too, no shitty range issues.

I don't know about you guys, but I get annoyed when I go on holiday for two weeks, and it clashes with the latest big game release. You know the sort of thing. Game X comes out, you give it a quick go, it's awesome, everyone here is talking about it, and then two days later you're on a flight. The holiday's great, but all you think about is getting back and playing it. Sure you took your 3DS to play something else, but it's not the same. The game you want to be playing is thousands of miles away.

Not any more.

Fuck yeah, I remember jumping on a plane a few hours after GTA: San Andreas launched! (Not in-game.)

This solves so many problems I've had with Nintendo in recent years. No region lock (Pickford confirmed) and consolidating the portable and home dev teams for a bigger library on one console goes a long way.

Hopefully the ten games I wanted* for the WiiU will get ported over, and then I don't need to bother getting one of those after all.

*

Spoiler

Splatoon (check)

Zelda (check)

Mario Kart 8 (Maybe check?)

Mario 3D World

Captain Toad

Tropical Freeze

Pikmin 3

Bayo 2

Paper Mario

Kirby Rainbow Curse

Bonus eleventh I just remembered: Wonderful 101

Apart from the dog walker, have a think who this was marketed at:

Jet setters

Campervan hipsters

Basketball players

Girls that live in a penthouse and have rooftop parties

Competitive eSports athletes.

It's not for us.

So the same as every other marketing video for every piece of hardware ever then! They never show someone sat in their pants, in the dark with a glass of beer playing away into the small hours do they?

True. I don't even bother with underpants most of the time.

Didn't Nintendo announce a while ago that they were releasing the portable "version*" a few months before the home "version"? I'm sure I read that somewhere, although it could have been baseless speculation or made up rubbish of course.

Anyway, I'd imagine that regardless of timing that's how it will be released. There will be a "complete" version with the screen, dock, and that joypad thing from the start of the video with the detachable controller bits. In Nintendo world every home would have one of these. (And this is the version that we'll all get). And there'll be a "light" version with just the screen and detachable controllers. Everyone would have one of these. (And this is the version we'll buy for our kids).

*I don't really mean version, they would all be identical, just with different extras in the box. I just couldn't bring myself to keep saying SKU.

I do agree with you that the situations they showed in the video were edge cases. No one is really going to do those things (apart from the airport and the car thing, I could see a family potentially doing that), but they're just trying to get an idea across that hey, you can take this thing anywhere! It's not like the Wii U that had a really limited range! These sort of adverts are almost always awful in the sense of they're not real people in real situations. I mean just look at some of the Kinect and Wii promotional videos that got put out! PSVR and PS4 has also had equally weird promotional videos where it's like, "nobody does that!"

I suppose I should be thankful it wasn't Jamie Redknapp.

Do we have anything closer on the controller - what's that square button under the 'd-pad' buttons? It has some kind of symbol on it. Is that the rumored 'Share' button?

Also, where's the flap?

The one on the right is the Home button. The one on the left could be for power or share. Personally I think power. Also I expect the design to chnage slightly before release as nintendo always make last second changes to hardware design.
